SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Padres players and city leaders surprised more than 140 elementary school students with new bicycles Friday.As part of the Padres Holiday Giving Tour, the team partnered with Bikes for Kids Foundation to gift 141 students at Horton Elementary School. At first, the group of second- and third-grade students thought they were gathered to learn which student had won a bicycle after an essay challenge. One name was read. But then a second student won. A third student had their name read.Just when the streak seemed to come alive, chants of "one more bike" broke out among the students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell on Tuesday is expected to formally announce enforcement plans to help with concerns over crowd control in Ocean Beach.Campbell, who represents District 2, said in a news release, “Our office continues to field calls regarding increased crowds gathering at Veteran’s Plaza in Ocean Beach on Wednesday evenings. While I appreciate the San Diego Police Department’s increased presence last week, it’s clear more comprehensive action needs to be taken to keep San Diegans safe.”Residents in the area say large gatherings have been consistently happening despite San Diego County public health orders restricting mass gatherings.According to OB residents, big crowds assemble Wednesday nights at Veteran’s Plaza, and many attendees are seen not wearing masks or practicing social distancing.Ocean Beach Town Council President Mark Winkie told ABC 10News in a previous interview that residents “want people to understand this is our community. You’re welcome to be here, but you need to adhere to social distancing rules and respect our community.”Winkie has met with City of San Diego officials about the gatherings in OB. He said the city was looking to shut down Veteran’s Plaza to help with enforcement.On Tuesday morning, ABC 10News spotted city crews placing plastic netting at the park.While he said the town council is not happy the park is closing, Winkie said a closure would allow needed renovations at the park to be done.The OB Town Council has also been pushing for more education to remind people about following the rules.Winkie said he’s been told health officials will be at Veterans Plaza on Wednesday nights to spread the word about county health guidelines. 1746

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 409 new coronavirus cases Thursday and a single-day record of 17 new deaths from the virus.Thursday's new cases had a 4% positive rate out of 10,434 reported tests, according to the county, bringing the region's total to 21,855 cases. The county's new deaths brought the county's death toll to 465. Eleven men and six women died between July 2 and July 15, and their ages ranged from 51 to 90 years of age. All but one had underlying conditions.The county also reported one new community outbreak traced to a gym, bringing the region's total to 14 community outbreaks in one week — double the region's trigger.Of the region's total COVID-19 cases, the county says 2,127 or 9.7% have needed hospitalization, and 558 or 2.6% of all cases and 26.2% of hospitalized cases were admitted to an intensive care unit.The county remained above the state’s threshold of no more than 100 cases per every 100,000 residents at 153.2 cases. 978

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Roughly 24 hours after stepping foot on Hawaiian soil, San Diego mother Christina Adele said that she and her family flew back home from vacation once Hawaiian state health officials had them quarantine after not accepting their negative test results.“I was in tears,” she told ABC10 News. She said that before the trip she checked Hawaii's entry checklist which requires a negative nucleic acid amplification test performed by a trusted partner, including CVS Pharmacy. She said that she and her family went to a CVS in Poway to get tested, which is where she said that she clarified with CVS staff that their testing would be adequate. “I said, ‘We're going to Hawaii. We need to make sure this is not an antigen or antibody test,’ and they assured me it wasn't,” she added.The family’s excitement quickly faded after their plane touched down in Hawaii. Adele said that Hawaiian health officials did not accept their tests and said that her family was instructed to quarantine for 14 days in their room at their resort.“[The resort staff said] if we see you out at all we're going to call the Hawaiian Police Department and you will go to jail,” she told ABC10 News. “I didn't pack much of anything for my son. I had some diapers and some things but I was thinking I was going to buy all that stuff in Hawaii.”She said her family couldn’t handle the quarantine so they flew back home the next day.“[I got] an email saying that [Hawaiian health officials] reread our COVID tests and they actually are valid and we could be immediately released from quarantine," she said a day after returning home.Part of the email reads: "Aloha, your COVID test has been read and you have been released from quarantine."“The whole ridiculous part is we had the negative COVID tests from the trusted partner,” she added.State health officials in Hawaii emailed the following to ABC10 News: 1901
