Only a handful of states have adopted a "contact tracing app" to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. In the Dakotas, the developer of the "Care19" app says his technology is available for other states too.Before COVID-19 was on anyone's radar, Tim Brookins, an alumnus of North Dakota State University, built something called the "Bison Tracker App." It tracked fans on their way to the football’s National Championship Game in Dallas in January“Literally this last year, we tracked 15,000 people so you can see 15,000 dots drive south over the week and then drive home when it’s done,” Brookins said. “People when they’re driving have nothing else to do they do nothing but check this thing to watch the migration of green dots across the map.”Brookins works for Microsoft. When the pandemic hit, the company told employees they could use their technology expertise to help their hometowns. So Brookins reached out North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.“He was initially saying we need to get contact tracing and a key part is remembering where you’ve been and oh by the way with Bison Tracker, Tim, you know how to collect people’s location, right?” Brookins said.And so, the Bison Tracker technology morphed into Care19.“It’s a key part of the contact tracing process to remember where you were over the last week or so and that’s hard to do when you’re feeling well, let alone if you’re feeling sick or frightened or stressed,” Brookins said.The app records where you go, and makes a list for the past 14 days. That way, if you test positive, you can help contact tracers trace where you went, who you talked to, who you've possibly infected.Jensa Woo, a librarian with San Francisco Public enlisted with the California Department of Public Health as a contact tracer. Woo registered after her library system closed during the spread of the virus.“I’ll talk with the contact and then the Department of Public Health recommendation is that they go get tested, if they test positive then there’s a follow up. A ripple effect but it starts with whether or not the person tests positive,” Woo said.Woo has talked to people as young as 11. California doesn't use an app instead, health officers say, their health workers have used contact tracers for decades to slow the spread of infectious disease like measles, SARS, and HIV/AIDS. Woo does all of her work from home, doesn't come into contact with anyone -physically.“It’s kind of tracing things out and being methodical in trying to figure out where has that virus gone and where are people in a place to isolate and stop so that virus doesn’t affect other people,” Woo said.Brookins says his app technology is already loaded for two states, North and South Dakota. It wouldn't be hard to add another state; he's in talks with some, and with universities.“There are a lot of states out there who are just so busy with their human tracing they haven’t come up for air to even consider doing an app since it’s an add on to their existing process,” Brookings said.When asked about the critiques of this type of technology and if people’s every move will be watched and recorded, Brookins said states don't have access to the data. In fact, only he does- and at that, all he's got is coordinates. No names.“If you want data that’s valuable, do something like Facebook. They have your email they know your city, what high school you went to, if you’re in a relationship and they have a billion users. that’s valuable,” Brookings said. “This data that’s completely anonymous isn’t even sale-able.”As for Woo, she says she's learned a lot and loves reaching out and helping people in the community. She misses the library and the books, but this is a close second.“It kind of comes second nature to interview people and to listen well and to ask good questions and open ended questions while I’m putting information in - so multi-tasking,” woo said. 3900
On Thursday, for the second straight day, the U.S. recorded more than 3,000 deaths linked to the coronavirus.According to a database kept by the COVID Tracking Project, 3,067 across the country were confirmed to have died of complications from COVID-19 on Thursday. The U.S. surpassed the 3,000 death mark for the first time on Wednesday when 3,088 deaths linked to the virus were recorded.Johns Hopkins University, which uses different methods in recording deaths, reports that 2,993 Americans died of the virus on Thursday. Both the COVID Tracking Project and Johns Hopkins report that Wednesday and Thursday marked the top two deadliest days since the start of the pandemic.The 3,000+ deaths represent more lives lost than in U.S. tragedies like the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks and the attack on Pearl Harbor prior to U.S. involvement in World War II.And while consecutive days of 3,000 death represent a level of loss not yet seen since the pandemic began, health officials warn that it could become the new normal — at least in the coming weeks. A spike in deaths typically trails a few weeks behind spikes in new cases and hospitalizations — both of which have been steadily increasing without respite for more than a month. Since Nov. 1, the seven-day average of new COVID-19 has exploded from 80,538 a day to 205,425 a day. In that same span, the number of people hospitalized with the virus has more than doubled from 47,531 to 107,248.Those extra patients are placing an enormous workload on hospitals throughout the country. Hospitals across the country are currently operating at maximum capacity, forcing doctors to treat patients in overflow areas like parking garages. Several states, like Indiana, have already mandated a temporary ban on elective surgeries in the hopes of lightening the load on health care workers.Unlike previous spikes in the spread of the virus, the current wave is not limited to one region of the country. According to the COVID Tracking Project, cases are rising or staying level in 43 states plus Washington, D.C. Thankfully, the impending authorization of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine offers some light at the end of the tunnel. Now more than ever, the impact of not having enough minority schoolteachers is part of the conversation, with efforts focused on undoing systemic disparities.“For so long, I think people have been uncomfortable having discussions about race and how that influences not only students but teachers in a school setting, where you are learning about what society is supposed to look like,” said Eric Duncan, Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust.Duncan is part of The Education Trust’s Education Diversity Team, a group that advocates for higher achievement of all students, particularly those of color or living in poverty.Research in Sage Journals found minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers, which can translate to better academic outcomes. Yet, teachers of color make up just 20% of the workforce. Close to 40% of all schools don't have a single teacher of color.Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minority students now make up a majority of the public-school population.Schools have made gains recently hiring more teachers of color, but retention is an issue because they leave the workforce at a higher rate than white teachers. The Education Trust found that's in part due to working conditions.Minority teachers often take on additional roles outside of teaching that they are not paid or even recognized for.School culture is another significant factor.“Discipline policies that educators of color are frankly tired of seeing and our country is tired of seeing the way that students are over disciplined, are misunderstood, particularly students of color, are driven out of school, are suspended for minor misconducts,” said Duncan.The Education Trust has recommendations on how schools can retain teachers of color, starting with collecting data by race and ethnicity on recruitment, hiring and retention. And also, providing scholarships, loan forgiveness or repayment, and relocation incentives.The group also suggests developing leaders that promote positive working conditions for a diverse workforce, and ensuring curriculum, learning and work environments are inclusive of all racial ethnic groups. 2162
OCOTILLO WELLS (KGTV) - Two people died after a crash in Ocotillo Wells Saturday night, according to Cal Fire. Two cars collided just after 7 p.m.near Highway 78 and Quarry Road. Two people died at the scene, Cal Fire confirmed. The road is closed in the area for an unknown amount of time to investigate the accident. Cal Fire asks that people avoid the scene of the accident.There is no word on what caused the accident at this time or how many other people were in the cars. 500

Another 65 percent suffered major damage. 426
