SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry is calling for an audit of a city-leased building repeatedly shuttered over asbestos.The building at 101 Ash Street was closed Saturday and city employees were relocated for "the next few weeks" over asbestos violations, Bry said in a memo. Bry added that she received an update on June 17, 2019 that the project at the location remained "on schedule and within budget" after she requested an update 10 days prior."It is apparent that 101 Ash Street is neither on-time nor on-budget. Officials later said they wanted to renovate all 19 floors, estimating that cost to come at about million for each floor. The costs put the project on hold, leaving the building vacant, City News Service reported.Construction was also stopped over asbestos violations in August 2019.Bry is now asking the city to answer a slew of inquiries over the city's process used to inspect and purchase the building, total costs to-date associated with employee relocations, unforeseen budget increases, subcontractor performance, and the financial impact on the city's Development Services Department."It continues to be frustrating to hear about issues with 101 Ash Street," Bry wrote.Prior to the city leasing the building, the location was occupied by San Diego Gas & Electric from 1968 through 1998, and by Sempra Energy from 1998 through 2015. 1921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are reminding families who may care for an at-risk loved one to have a plan if they become lost.Officers said Saturday that a woman named "Lupe" disappeared from her home recently and was lost before a neighbor who noticed her called police.SDPD Southern Division officer McClain responded to the call and stayed with Lupe as other officers searched the area to try and get her back home, according to police. An officer eventually found a residence with an open door, which was Lupe's home.Instead of transporting her back home in a police vehicle, and possibly confusing or scaring the woman, SDPD said McClain, "figured it was time to get his steps in and walked Lupe back to her residence." There, she was reunited with her family.SDPD said the incident highlighted the need for families to make sure loved ones with medical or mental issues have an ID bracelet with their basic information, address, and emergency contact if they become lost.The Alzheimer's Association says families can prevent a loved one from wandering away from home by identifying times they are likely to wander and plan activities, ensure basic meets are met, use devices to signal when a door or window opens, and regularly supervise them. The group says families can plan for the possibility of someone wandering away from home by asking neighbors to call if they see the person alone, know where a person could likely go to if they leave the home alone, and familiarize themselves with the neighborhood and any possible hazards there may be. 1568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials announced Wednesday that three more people died from complications from the flu bringing the county's death toll this season to 49.The deceased were described as an 84-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman from San Diego, and a 50-year-old woman from East County, according to County of San Diego Communications Office spokesperson Jose A. Alvarez.All three had underlying medical conditions.“Influenza activity in the region is still elevated. People should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The flu vaccine is safe and effective.”This season's death toll is far lower than last season. 307 San Diegans died from complications from the flu through this time last year.The number of people with influenza-like symptoms who showed up at local emergency departments went up one percentage point last week, reaching 6 percent again.The flu claimed the county's first young victim Feb. 20. A 14-year-old girl became the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego. The girl had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.The majority of cases have been of the H1N1 virus, the county says, which typically affects younger and middle-aged adults because they have not been exposed as much as older adults.County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions."Due to continued elevated influenza activity in the county, Wooten is extending—until April 30—the order for unvaccinated health care personnel to wear a mask while they’re in patient care areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego area fire agencies are boosting staffing levels ahead of what may be the worst Santa Ana wind event this year. The intense weather situation, due to start Tuesday night and last through Thursday, has crews working extra shifts. Cal Fire San Diego has nearly all of its 500 firefighters on duty to staff equipment and fill support roles, an agency spokesperson said on behalf of Chief Tony Mecham. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather ConditionsAlthough the agency is supporting other fires across California, the Regional Coordination Center in Riverside has limited the number of resources sent out of Southern California, Cal Fire reported. Cal Fire also brought 150 out-of-state fire engines to California. San Diego County has an additional 15 fire engines, five patrols, six water tenders, and support elements including a Cal Fire communications unit. The California Office of Emergency Services also announced Tuesday it was coordinating to pre-position fire equipment and personnel ahead of Santa Ana conditions. Two strike teams consisting of five engines are staged in San Diego County, along with a helicopter. The San Diego Fire-Rescue department said staffing would be increased Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. due to the wind event.Two firefighting helicopters are available around the clock, according to spokesperson Mónica Mu?oz.
