Washington - China is on course to catch up with the United States and join the front ranks of world economic powers, but that is little cause for concern even among Americans, a global survey said Monday. Most respondents in 13 countries agreed it was "likely that someday China's economy will grow to be as large as the US economy," according to the opinion poll by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and WorldPublicOpinion.org. "What is particularly striking is that despite the tectonic significance of China catching up with the US, overall the world public's response is low key -- almost philosophical," said Steven Kull, editor of WorldPublicOpinion.org. But the poll showed there is also distrust of China to "act responsibly" in world affairs.  In no country was there a majority who felt that China's economic rise would be mostly negative, but that was not because China is particularly trusted, the pollsters said. Majorities in 10 out of 15 countries said they did not trust China "to act responsibly in the world." But the same number also said they distrusted the United States. "Though people are not threatened by the rise of China, they do not appear to be assuming that it will be a new benign world leader," Kull said. "They seem to have a clear-eyed view that China is largely acting on its own interests." The Chinese themselves are among the more skeptical populations, with only half saying that their economy will catch up with the United States'. Among Americans, the percentage was 60 percent. Only in India and the Philippines did a plurality of respondents say the United States would always remain a bigger economy than China. The highest level of concern about the implications of China's economic march was in the United States, where one in three is worried. But 54 percent of Americans said that its rise would be "neither positive nor negative" while one in 10 said it would be mostly positive. Only in Iran did a majority -- 60 percent -- say that it would be "mostly positive for China to catch up." The survey included 18 countries: Australia, Argentina, Armenia, China, France, India, Iran, Israel, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, Ukraine, and the United States, plus the Palestinian territories. Not every question of the poll was asked in each country, so that the results for some questions covered less than 18 countries.

It will mainly move natural gas from Central Asia to the Yangtze and Pearl River Deltas, the country's two most developed regions.Construction on another pipeline, which will link the Puguang Gas Field in the southwestern province of Sichuan, one of the country's largest, with the Yangtze River Delta, started last August.

SHANGHAI: Thirty intellectually disabled teenagers and volunteers from 18 nations and regions shared their friendship, joy and ideas at a forum held on Friday to fight stereotypes and spread the message of the Special Olympics.The 2007 Global Youth Summit, in conjunction with the ongoing Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, offered young people an opportunity to talk openly about their needs and expectations and seek ways to reverse stereotyped attitudes about those who are mentally disadvantaged .The 30 pairs of students each had a Special Olympics athlete accompanied by a peer from a middle school or college. The event also brought together adult celebrities from China and abroad to lend their support.At yesterday's summit, Piao Roubing, 17, an athlete from Northeast China, recalled her friendship with her partner, Zhao Xiaoyue, who now studies at a Shanghai university. After meeting at a community forum five years ago, the two have been in contact to share both their happiness and troubles."I was surprised when I received a short message from her one day to consult me about her pains in growing up," said the 19-year-old Zhao. "I feel I am very important to her and she encourages me to have the power and determination to change lives."Compared with many others, people with intellectual disabilities are more sincere and pure, Zhao said. "She once misunderstood my friendly roughhousing with other girls and offered to help me, which made me very impressed."Asked to describe her companion, Piao said the older girl was respectful, lovely and optimistic."She is a great sister," Piao said.The summit yesterday included a moving moment when Piao, with her eyes covered, was asked to identify Zhao among a group of individuals -- including movie star Colin Farrell -- by only feeling their hands.With little difficulty the girl recognized her friend's hand. JINAN - Seven fishermen on two boats were rescued on Saturday off east China after their boats lost control in high gales, local rescue sources said. The engine of a fishing boat with six people aboard at the Bajiao offshore area near Yantai city, Shandong Province stopped working around 1:20 p.m. Saturday as its screw propeller was enlaced by aquatic plants amid sudden gales on the sea. A helicopter from the Beihai No. 1 Rescue Flying Squad was dispatched to the site and rescued the six in 20 minutes. The helicopter saved another fisherman on a separate boat on its way back. All the rescued fishermen were sent to Penglai, an island city near Yantai, Saturday afternoon.

BEIJING -- China's central bank admitted on Wednesday that the country is coming under increasing pressure from price hikes, and acknowledged inflation risks are "worthy of attention".The People's Bank of China said in its second-quarter monetary report published on Wednesday that the current rising prices were not solely caused by accidental and temporary factors, adding that inflation risks were on the rise.It warned that the price hikes of food products could spread to other consumer products.The report identified four reasons behind the increasing risk of inflation.It said prices for grain and meat products would not fall in the short term and uncertainties over the autumn harvest were aggravated by the ongoing drought.Meanwhile, the demand for grain is increasing from both the public and the bio-fuel industry.The meat prices would probably continue to rise in the long term owing to the rising feeding costs and the short supply, which would not be replenished in the short term due to the breeding cycle of pigs, and the price hikes of meat could easily spread to other food products, the report said.Prices of energy and resources are under pressure as the world petroleum price has climbed to an even higher level and the domestic pricing reform of resources and the country's environmental protection efforts would also push the prices higher, it said.The report also said labor costs were rising which would eventually raise the prices of consumer products.People's anticipation of inflation had been enhanced, and it would put further pressure on price hikes, according to the report.A survey by the central bank in the second quarter showed that 40.2 percent of those interviewed, the second highest record since 1999, said they were worried about inflation.China's consumer price index (CPI) rose 3.2 percent in the first half of this year, and the growth rate was 1.9 percentage points higher than the year-earlier level.Price hike for foodstuffs, mainly grain, meat and fowl and eggs, contributed significantly to the rise.
