A trip to "The Happiest Place On Earth" turned into a nightmare, according to an Inland Empire woman who spent two nights at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. Ivy Eldridge was a guest at the hotel back in April, when she claims she was bitten by bed bugs, suffering physical, financial and emotional damages, according to a complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Eldridge has hired attorney Brian Virag, who specializes in bedbug litigation, to bring a lawsuit against the hotel, along with the Walt Disney Co. and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Virag claims that Eldridge was bitten all over her upper body, including her face, ears, arm, neck and back. "People put trust in the Disney name and pay top dollar to stay at the Disneyland Hotel," Virag said. "In this case, Ms. Eldridge's trust was betrayed." Virag is also currently representing Victoria's Secret model Sabrina Jales St. Pierre, in a bed bug related lawsuit being brought against Embassy Suites Palm Desert. "Bed bugs don't discriminate," Virag said. "They are found in hotels throughout the country and worldwide. Shadow Health is using virtual patients to train real people in hopes of quickly bringing those real students into the workforce.From pediatrics to maternal health, the future of nursing school is happening now.“The technology is so good, you’ll get an answer. You might not get the answer you’re looking for; you’ll have to rephrase and that’s the way it is in real life too,” said Lorrie Rilko, an assistant professor at George Washington University’s School of Nursing.She was a nurse practitioner for 30 years and then decided it was time to help the next generation of nurses.“My greatest responsibility is to prepare future nurse practitioners in the art of accurate history taking and skilled physical exam and then putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together to come up with a clinical diagnosis,” Rilko said.She says George Washington University was already using this simulated technology when the pandemic hit. The pandemic put the program in the perfect position to continue training new medical professionals and it allows them to learn, practice and fail on computers rather than on real live patients.“It's kind of like telehealth,” Rilko said. “We’ve had telehealth and until we had to really rely on telehealth, there were a lot of barriers to overcome."Brent Gordon is the managing director for Elsevier's nursing and health education business, which recently acquired Shadow Health.“One of the challenges in higher education institutions, specifically in the United States and this is true worldwide, is that they have challenges meeting the demand, they have capacity constraints,” Gordon said. “One example is shortage of clinical space. Digital simulations help solve that problem.”He says one of the real problems that the virtual education solves is that of communication, which he says can be at the root of medical malpractice claims.“Nurses are increasingly graduating, passing the (National Council Licensure Examination) NCLEX but not entering practice with the clinical reasoning skills they need to be successful on day one," said Gordon.Rilko said her students enjoy the virtual interaction, and they like training on their own time. A teenager suspected of opening fire at a high school near Spokane, Washington and killing one student told detectives he wanted to teach others a lesson, court documents released Thursday said.The suspect has been charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder after a deadly shooting at the at Freeman High School on Wednesday, the Spokane County sheriff's office said in a statement.Authorities say the shooter, a sophomore at the school, pulled a handgun and started shooting indiscriminately inside the school until a janitor approached him and ordered him to surrender. A panel of three federal judges in North Carolina ruled Monday the state's congressional map is an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander that favors Republicans, and said it may require districts to be redrawn before the November elections.Republicans hold 10 of the state's 13 seats in the House of Representatives, and a redrawn map could put more seats in play for Democrats -- potentially affecting control of the House.The judges acknowledged primary elections have already occurred, but said they were reluctant to let voting take place in districts that courts twice found had been unconstitutionally drawn.The same decision was reached by the court in January, but the Supreme Court declined in June to hear the case and it was sent back for reconsideration. The Supreme Court has never ruled a partisan gerrymander to be unconstitutional, and it passed up three separate opportunities to do so in the last term.The decision Monday could result in an election-year appeal to the Supreme Court. The court is currently evenly split on ideological lines and lacks a ninth justice to tip the scale.
