BRASILIA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao explained to several foreign leaders why he had to cut short his visit after a deadly earthquake in northwestern China's Qinghai province."At this difficult time, I need to return to my country urgently, to be together with the people of China, pitching in with the earthquake rescue efforts," Hu said to the leaders.A 7.1-magnitude quake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on Wednesday, killing at least 1,144 people and leaving 294 missing and 11,486 injured. BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has allocated another 200 million yuan (29.3 million U.S. dollars) to quake relief in the northwest Qinghai Province on top of 500 million yuan already earmarked, the Ministry of Finance said Friday.The funds will support relief efforts, including resettlement, subsidy on daily necessities, medical care, epidemic prevention, re-opening of schools, and infrastructure repairs, according to the ministry's website.The ministry ordered timely allotment and tightened management of the relief funds to help the quake-affected residents to restore production and life as early as possible.The 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Qinghai's Yushu prefecture on April 14 had left at least 2,200 people dead, with more than 100,000 homeless.

SHANGHAI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Environment authorities in Shanghai will ban burning waste straw in the suburban agricultural areas to ensure air quality during the World Expo period.The Shanghai Municipal Environment Protection Bureau will use satellite remote sensing to monitor the burning of waste straw during the Expo period from May 1 to Oct. 31, the bureau said in a statement Saturday.Statistics show that about 170,000 hectares of barley, wheat, paddy and rape are planted in the suburban agricultural areas of Shanghai, which can produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of waste straw every year, according to the bureau.Burning waste straw will produce carbon dioxide and other pollutants to pollute the air, it said.To help dispose of the waste straw, more than 40 organic fertilizer plants in Shanghai have planned to use more straw as auxiliary material in fertilizer production, the bureau said.The Shanghai World Expo, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," is expected to draw 70 million visitors from around the world during the six-month period.
