At first, Hillary Slusser thought she had the flu.She hadn't been feeling well for a couple weeks but, after getting really sick at work, she went home and took not one, but three pregnancy tests. And, with others having had babies earlier in the year, Slusser said there would be over 20 births in the department by the end of 2019."By the time it got to be 17, everybody was just like, 'There is something going,'" Slusser told CNN. "But it was very exciting to be sharing this with all the girls."For the majority of the women, this will be their first child, which makes the occasion even more special.Everyone is pitching in so they can keep doing their jobsWith 17 pregnancies, though, comes 17 months-long absences from work. Slusser is taking 16 weeks off, but she said not everyone is that fortunate. Most are taking 12, and the department has already sent out an email asking for delivery dates in preparation for the absences to come.The department has been very supportive, Slusser said, with people taking on extra weight. Most of the women work in trauma, which she said can be labor intensive. Staff members must wear heavy protective gear beneath their gown, along with gloves, a mask, an eye shield and a hairnet, all just to protect from blood and body fluids. Understandably, wearing all that while eight months pregnant can be a lot.The department has moved some of the women from working trauma because of their pregnancies, which Slusser said has been heartbreaking. But others in the department have been helping."Even our attending physicians help lift patients over so I don't have to do that," Slusser said. "Little things like that make us still be able to do our jobs."It's still stressful, and Slusser said she does get a bit more tired throughout her shift. But with all the support from her coworkers, she'll be ready for the big day. 2466

And then there’s homework.“This year, we did almost two hours of homework a night ,” said mom Crystal. “And then she plays softball, so that on top of practice, on top of—it was just a lot for her this year.”The Roberts family just down the block has mixed feelings. Kendra, 12, who uses the extra day to hangout with friends, grins from ear to ear when asked if she likes it.“Yea,” she says smiling.Mom Alecia Roberts sees pros and cons.“We have more family time on the weekends because then we can focus on other things during Mondays,” Roberts said. “But I still work on Mondays.”District superintendent Chris Fiedler says the biggest reason for the change was to attract more qualified teacher applicants. And so far, he says, its worked.“[For] elementary teaching positions a good pool [of applicants] would have been 40-50, and we were seeing pools of over 100,” Fiedler said.He says they’re also more experienced applicants. An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department is under investigation after his body camera allegedly caught him fondling the body of a dead woman.The officer and his partner were responding to a call about a possible dead body in a residential unit, sources told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the incident.The officers determined the woman was dead, and while one officer went to get something from the patrol car, the accused officer turned off his body-worn camera and allegedly fondled the deceased woman's breasts, LAPD officials told the LA Times.Though the camera was turned off before the incident, it was captured by the two-minute buffer on the device, the newspaper reported."The department is aware of the incident and an internal investigation has been launched," LAPD officer Jeff Lee said, adding that he cannot comment further on pending personnel matters.LAPD Assistant Chief Robert Arcos told the LA Times the recording was "very disturbing."A source familiar with the investigation said the incident happened a few weeks ago but was found in a random check of bodycam footage. He called the incident "way beyond the pale" and "unacceptable" and said co-workers of the accused in LAPD's Central Division are furious.The case has not been referred to the District Attorney's office since it is still under investigation.
