A genetic analysis of COVID-19 patients suggests that blood type might influence whether someone develops severe disease.Scientists who compared the genes of thousands of patients in Europe found that those who had Type A blood were more likely to have severe disease while those with Type O were less likely.Wednesday’s report in the New England Journal of Medicine does not prove a blood type connection, but it does confirm a previous report from China of such a link.“Most of us discounted it because it was a very crude study,” Dr. Parameswar Hari, a blood specialist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said of the report from China. With the new work, “now I believe it,” he said. “It could be very important.”Other scientists urged caution.The evidence of a role for blood type is “tentative ... it isn’t enough of a signal to be sure,” said Dr. Eric Topol, head of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in San Diego.The study, involving scientists in Italy, Spain, Denmark, Germany and other countries, compared about 2,000 patients with severe COVID-19 to several thousand other people who were healthy or who had only mild or no symptoms. Researchers tied variations in six genes to the likelihood of severe disease, including some that could have a role in how vulnerable people are to the virus. They also tied blood groups to possible risk.Most genetic studies like this are much larger, so it would be important to see if other scientists can look at other groups of patients to see if they find the same links, Topol said.Many researchers have been hunting for clues as to why some people infected with the coronavirus get very ill and others, less so. A Christmas display that's a little too life-like has led to some panicked calls to 911.Chris Heerlein of Austin, Texas, recreated the famous scene of Clark Griswold hanging from the roof in the 1989 movie "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." For a week, a dummy has been hanging perilously from the side of his house, unable to reach a ladder that's fallen.The knock-off was a bit too good. Last week, a day after the installation, Alfred Norwood Jr. stopped his car, jumped out and ran to help the man hanging from the roof.The tense moment was captured on the Heerlein's Nest camera."Can you reach it? Can you reach it?" Norwood calls up to the man on the roof, as seen in the video. "Help!" he yells toward the street, turns away and runs back to call the police.When Heerlein found out what happened, he and his family tracked down the good Samaritan to let him know the dummy was fine and thanked him for his efforts."The thing was out there only one day, and Alfred was running to save this man's life. Alfred is a veteran and it was his instinct. He was the only one who jumped out and tried to help," Heerlein told CNN on Monday."He thought the guy might have been electrocuted by the lights ... but the dummy wasn't responding," Heerlein said.A police officer who came to the door after the mixup said police had received several calls about the Christmas display saying there was a man hanging from the roof.After the attempted Clark Griswold rescue, Heerlein said he put up a sign letting people know Griswold is fine."Clark G. is part of our Christmas display. Please don't call 911," reads the sign. "That so far has been sufficient," Heerlein said.The homeowner and the good Samaritan reunited on Monday, a week after the incident. Norwood was rewarded for his efforts.Norwood was the only person to stop and try to save the man, Heerlein said. Norwood said he wanted to buy some groceries because he hardly had money to buy food. A gunman opened fire inside of a Cheltenham Township, Pa. Walmart on Tuesday, leaving five people shot and several others with non-gunshot injuries, NBC Philadelphia reported, citing law enforcement officials. The incident took place around 6:15 p.m., and has since been contained. Eyewitnesses told NBC Philadelphia that the shooting took place at a cash register inside of Walmart.A gunman reportedly took the gun out of his waistband and shot five people during an altercation. A pregnant woman, who was not shot, was injured trying to get away. Two police officers were also injured during a fight trying to apprehend the suspect. The gunman reportedly fired 10 gunshots inside of the Walmart before fleeing. All eight victims are expected to survive. Two people were taken into custody after the suspected gunman and a possible accomplice tried to flee.  917
