Apparently, that state of mind won't help Californians enjoy the best quality of life in the U.S.Despite our pristine beaches, famous cities, and awesome nickname (The Golden State really is a great one), Californians reportedly enjoy one of the lowest qualities of life, according to U.S. News and World Report's annual "Best States" rankings.The study ranks states on a variety of metrics, including quality of life, opportunities for residents, education, healthcare, economy, infrastructure, crime and corrections, and fiscal stability.RELATED: AAA's top rated restaurants, hotels in San Diego CountyOk, it's starting to make a little sense. Metrics are weighted based on what more than 30,000 participants indicated as the most important aspects of livelihood. Healthcare and education were the heaviest scores, followed by economy, opportunity, and infrastructure.Overall, the Golden State came in at 32, though scored last in quality of life and near last in opportunity and fiscal stability."In addition to a healthy environment, a person's quality of life is largely a result of their interactions with those around them," U.S. News wrote. The state ranked 44 for natural environment and 47 for social environment.Natural environment measured drinking water quality, pollution and industrial toxins, and air quality. While drinking water quality was ranked 13, pollution health risks and urban air quality were among the worst states.Social environment looked at community engagement, social support, and voter participation. (LEX 18) — A new poll released Tuesday shows Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has a sizable lead over his Democratic challenger in Kentucky's U.S. Senate race.The Morning Consult poll, which surveyed 793 likely voters, showed McConnell leads retired Marine Lt. Colonel Amy McGrath by 17 points, 53% to 36%.The poll found that if the 2020 election were held today, 84% of Republicans would vote for McConnell, and 79% of Democrats say they would vote for McGrath. Independents favor McConnell over McGrath 45% to 33%. 12% of Democrats say they will vote for McConnell, and 7% of Republicans say they would back McGrath. 643

(KGTV) -- Two local families are now connected in a special way, thanks to Lifesharing, the organ donation group serving San Diego and Imperial Counties. Lifesharing arranged a meeting between a North County family and the man who received their son’s heart.Mathieu Bergeron died last May after a tragic skateboarding accident. The 20-year-old was a registered organ donor.Bergeron’s heart saved the life of Dr. Murray Alsip, who was suffering from a heart condition that made it difficult to walk and, at times, to even breathe.Alsip said he had “one foot in the grave” before he was saved by Bergeron’s precious gift.The family meeting was both joyful and emotional. With the aid of a stethoscope, Bergeron’s parents and high school sweetheart got to listen to the heart beating inside of Alsip’s chest.Both families agreed to share their story in an effort to encourage others to say “yes” to organ and tissue donation.Statistics from LifeSharing San Diego: 973

A 7-year-old Guatemalan girl died last week, hours after she was taken into Border Patrol custody, the Department of Homeland Security said.The Washington Post first reported Thursday that the girl died of dehydration and septic shock last week in El Paso, Texas after she was taken into custody by Border Patrol after crossing illegally with her father into the United States."Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the child," the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Border Patrol, said in a statement."Border Patrol agents took every possible step to save the child's life under the most trying of circumstances. As fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, we empathize with the loss of any child."The girl and her father were part of a large group of migrants who approached Border Patrol agents in a remote area of the New Mexico desert last Thursday, the newspaper reported, citing US Customs and Border Protection records.The child began having seizures hours after she was taken into custody and was airlifted to the Providence Children's Hospital in El Paso, CBP told the Post. 1119
