LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Three weeks after violence ripped through La Mesa, small businesses continue supporting one another, working toward recovery."It broke our heart when a lot of the glass was busted," Mike Miller said. He recently moved to La Mesa with his wife, Neng, charmed by the small town feel.The looting and destruction the night of May 30th after a rally against injustice sent a shockwave through the community.Leslie Thomas said she watched the horror from her balcony, just a couple blocks away. "We could see the flames and everything coming up, and we didn't sleep much that night but the next morning we got up and we said, 'you know what? We live here, what can we do to fix everything?'"That mantra reflected by hundreds who showed up that Sunday morning to help.As Leslie walked with her husband down the street they noticed "the liquor store on the corner down there, we walked by and we were like, 'Your windows aren't blown out!' and he was like, 'Everyone who knows me, who knows that I'm part of this neighborhood came out and protected my windows and I told them to go home and they wouldn't.' But he was out there giving water to everybody [Sunday] and he didn't question why he was doing it. People were giving out free coffee."A showing of sheer humanity.La Mesa neighbors aren't surprised to hear that generosity is still being extended weeks later.La Mesa Glass replaced the windows at Play It Again Sports June 11th and Bohemian House Saturday for free.The owners of Bohemian House said they were incredibly grateful for their gift, helping them get back to business.10News reached out to La Mesa Glass to ask how many businesses they have supported during this time and have not heard back yet.Neighbors said even the artwork painted over plywood boards standing guard in front of many La Mesa businesses were uplifting. Words and images of hope reminded them how strong and close their community is."I don't think this is going to change us in any way, I actually think it's going to make us a stronger neighborhood," Thomas said, defining La Mesa Strong.Some of the boards have come down but there are still more than a dozen businesses with plywood protecting their broken windows. 2229

LAS VEGAS - From the counting room to the courtroom. That's where things are headed as Nevada has become center stage for a legal showdown.The Trump campaign and the Nevada Republican Party are likely to keep knocking on Nevada courthouse doors as our state is poised to become a pawn in a legal chess game surrounding election results and how votes are counted."The Trump campaign hasn't been shy about sort of foreshadowing this stream of lawsuits," said UNLV associate professor of Political Science Rebecca Gill. "And indeed, they started well before Election Day as well."But in one Nevada case, it appears both sides may have come to an agreement to avoid a court battle.Thursday, a proposed settlement in a pending case before the Nevada Supreme Court.On election night, in a unanimous vote, the state's high court rejected an emergency appeal by the Trump campaign and state Republican party that sought to stop counting mail ballots in Clark County. The appeal was from an earlier loss in a lower court where the GOP raised concerns about observing ballot processing and electronic signature verification, with the implication of potential for fraud."But unfortunately for the Trump campaign, there's really no evidence of widespread voter fraud at all, regardless of what type of voting mechanism is used," said Professor Gill. "Mainly because, among other things, voter fraud is a felony. And the return on investment is very low because you would have to risk a felony in order to have an absolutely small chance of changing any outcome, particularly in a presidential election."The state Supreme Court wouldn't stop the count, but agreed to hear an expedited appeal. Then, Thursday afternoon, the appellants asked for an extra week, citing a pending settlement of the case. That after the Clark County Registrar agreed to make all tables where the ballot duplication process occurs visible to public observers.Once everyone signs off, the appeal will be dismissed.If any issues arise, a decision on how to proceed will come no later than Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.In the meantime, Clark County can continue counting mail ballots. Those postmarked by election day that arrives by Nov. 10 must be counted by Nov. 12.In another lawsuit, the Trump campaign and Nevada GOP sued Clark County to force officials to release records including copies of every registered voter's signature. That likely indicates a potential challenge over signature matches of what's on file versus on the actual ballot.A District Court judge denied that request and said most of the other requested records didn’t have to be produced until Nov. 20, after county officials finish counting votes.Of course, the specter of a recount demand looms large depending on how narrow the margin of votes ultimately is. Recounts are done to confirm accuracy, check for mistakes and settle fraud claims.The most infamous recount in U.S. history was Bush vs. Gore in 2000 in Florida."But I think it's important to remember that what happened in Florida in 2000," explains Professor Gill. " It was a very unusual confluence of events that led to a situation where there was a real technical difficulty with the actual mechanics of voting in Florida. And that was coupled with this extremely small difference in the vote counts."In Nevada, we have no rules that would trigger an automatic recount. The candidate defeated in an initial vote count can ask for a recount if they deposit estimated costs of the effort. And the candidate gets reimbursed if the recount changes the race’s outcome.President Trump has threatened to take his election concerns to the United States Supreme Court."But I think if you couple these wider vote margins with the fact that there isn't this one really solid reason to be concerned with the operation of the electoral system," said Professor Gill. "Then I think that it's probably unlikely that anything that would happen in the courts would have that outcome that the Trump campaign is probably looking for."Legal experts say the way the nation's high court would most likely be brought in, would be to review a specific challenge to ballots in a tight race in a state that could tip the balance in the election.Nevada, with its six electoral votes, could be that state. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV)— Scientists all over the world are now studying last night’s 7.1M earthquake near Ridgecrest, CA. Seismologists say we should be expecting another big quake in the near future. It seemed like deja vu — a 6.4M followed by a 7.1M, just one day later. “Some people would like to call them separate events, but I don’t think they are separate events,” UCSD Seismologist Dr. Debi Kilb said. Kilb believes neither jolt was a foreshock or an aftershock. She considers these two quakes “mainshocks,” in what is called a “doublet sequence.”“Because the space and time of these earthquakes are so close together, we are beginning to call them an earthquake doublet. So that includes the pair of 6.4 earthquake and the 7.1 earthquake,” Dr. Kilb said. Not only did it shake for several seconds, tremors were also felt from across the state, and even in Arizona. Like the first big earthquake on July 4, the 7.1M was another rare one. The quake was not along a known fault line. Instead, scientists say this may map out a brand new fault.“It was a right lateral fault, meaning that the [earth’s] material on this [east] side moved to the right and down and the material on this [west] side moved up,” Dr. Kilb said. Luckily, California’s most massive quake in 20 years occurred in a rural area, meaning injuries and damages were minimal. But Dr. Kilb says living in California, we are never completely out of the woods. “We live in earthquake country,” Dr. Kilb said. “And earthquakes happen all the time, and they will often be a surprise. LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas police arrested a man Saturday after he climbed on a wing of a large passenger airplane at the city's international airport.Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it responded to a call of a man on the tarmac at McCarran Airport at about 1:32 p.m. local time on Saturday.When they arrived, police say they found a man on the wing of an Alaska Airlines flight headed to Portland. (KGTV) -  A thief in a hoodie made off with a haul in La Mesa and the contents of that haul are sparking outrage.Outside her condo just off El Cajon Boulevard, Kathleen put out several bags and boxes right outside her front door Monday morning. "A lot of sweaters and warm winter clothes, a couple pair of shoes and a teddy bear," said Kathleen.Also included: Several throw rugs and some households items. Stuck on each box and bag was a sticky note with the name: Vietnam Veterans of America, the group picking up the donations."They weren't scheduled to come until Tuesday," said Kathleen.So when Kathleen came home Monday afternoon and discovered the donations gone, she checked her Ring camera footage. The video begins with a person in a hoodie, bending down, lifting a box and throw rug, and then running off. Kathleen says the camera wasn't rolling when the other stuff vanished."Really sad they take from Vietnam veterans," said Kathleen.Kathleen comes from a military family, including a brother who served in the Vietnam War."It's heartbreaking. These are people who wrote a blank check to the government with their lives, for our freedom," Kathleen.Neighbors saw the same hooded figure dumpster diving around the same time as the theft.
