EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- In 1987, at the age of six, Cody Martinez moved from Pine Valley to the Sycuan Reservation to live with his grandmother."My dad is Kumeyaay and Hispanic that is my link to my maternal grandmother, who is a tribal member here at Sycuan," said Martinez, the Chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. "Going from Pine Valley to Sycuan wasn't too difficult; both were pretty rural.""San Diego County has the most Indian reservations within the county line in North America," he said. "There wasn't a lot of cultural events that I could recall. The first large cultural event that I could vividly remember was our first pow wow that we hosted in 1989. Today we have a full-blown cultural resource department and museum, and we have monthly cultural events."As Martinez grew older, his interest and involvement in the community also grew."At a young age, I realized that we had our own community, that had its own authority," he said. "We had a tribal council, we made our own laws, and we had our own rules, and I just knew that that's something I wanted to be a part of."In high school, Martinez said he volunteered in the tribal office and sat on different committees. As a young adult, he worked for Sycuan's gaming commission for a few years, then landed a seat in the tribal council as the tribal treasurer.After taking some time off after losing reelection as tribal treasurer, he later took a role in the planning and development department.Ultimately, Martinez would gain support from tribal families in 2014 and make his way into a leadership role, serving as the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation's Chairman.He was reelected in 2018 and currently holds the position."Sometimes, with all the political craziness and COVID craziness, I find solitude and reassurance that we get to manage our own community," he said.Martinez is thrilled to celebrate Native American Heritage Month again, hanging on to the rich history and keeping it alive by passing it all down to the next generations."The cultural exposure, I have two sons, 10 and 12, to their generation has definitely grown, their exposure and access to cultural enrichment. My sons were able to learn how to count in Kumeyaay and basic numbers and directions when they were very young," he said. Their remains were found in Rexburg, Idaho, earlier this month on property owned by Daybell, their stepfather. The children's mother, Lori Daybell (née Vallow), was arrested in connection with their disappearance earlier this year.According to the probable cause affidavit for Daybell's arrest, the remains of one child was found wrapped in plastic and sealed with duct tape. The other was burned and buried next to a pet cemetery on the property.The documents also state that in the days before JJ's and Tylee's disappearance, Lori Daybell referred to her children as "zombies" in a conversation with a friend.Lori Daybell said part of her and her husband's religious beliefs was a mission to "rid the world of zombies."The document states that a "zombie refers to an individual whose mortal spirit has left their body and that their body is now the host of another spirit."Lori Daybell told a friend that JJ had become a zombie, loved Satan, and that the boy's "an increased vocabulary" was also evidence that JJ was a zombie. That same friend observed JJ's behavior and noted that it was the same as she had always seen him.TIMELINE: Investigation into Lori Daybell, disappearance of JJ Vallow and Tylee RyanCourt documents also state that GPS tracking put Lori Daybell's brother, Alex Cox, on Chad Daybell's property near the burial sites on Sept. 9 — one day after JJ and Tylee was last seen.Cox later died on Dec. 11. Authorities have since determined Cox's death was of natural causes.On the day officers searched Chad Daybell's home on June 9, he was seen observing officers conduct the search. (KGTV) -- Firefighters are on scene after two children fell out of a window in Granite Hills Monday afternoon.According to authorities, the incident happened on Garrison Way around 1:40 p.m. The two children are reportedly 20 and 23-months-old.The San Miguel Fire Department is handling the incident. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Authorities are working to clear a fuel spill Sunday afternoon after a small plane crashed landed onto a quiet El Cajon neighborhoodThe plane crashed sometime around 2 p.m. at 2nd Street and El Rey in El Cajon.The pilot was en route to Gillispie Field, a little more than a mile from where it crashed.Authorities say two people were on board the aircraft but suffered no injuries.There was a small fuel leak following the crash and the plane knocked down some wires when it crash landed.  Police are asking the public to avoid the area until about 4 p.m. Sunday.This is a developing story.  Stay with 10News for updates. 687
