"I have been reassigned to the district office due to a statement that was not accurately relayed to the newspaper by one of our parents. It is unfortunate that someone can make a false statement and do so anonymously and it holds credibility but that is the world we live in." 285

(AP) — The U.S. communications regulator on Tuesday proposed a 5 million fine, its largest ever, against two health insurance telemarketers for spamming people with 1 billion robocalls using fake phone numbers. The Federal Communications Commission said John Spiller and Jakob Mears made the calls through two businesses that purported to sell products from major insurers but actually worked on behalf of other companies. State attorneys general of Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas also sued the two men and their companies, Rising Eagle and JSquared Telecom, in federal court in Texas, where both men live, for violating the federal law governing telemarketing, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.According to the FCC, the robocalls offered plans from insurers like Aetna and UnitedHealth with an automated message. But if consumers pressed a button for more information, they were forwarded to a call center that sold plans that weren't connected to the insurers.Consumers weren't the only ones annoyed by the calls. The companies advertised in the fake calls also received angry calls and were the target of lawsuits from consumers. 1188

LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- Comedian Kevin Hart suffered “major back injuries” following a crash in Los Angeles early Sunday morning, TMZ reports. According to TMZ, the crash happened around 1 a.m. in Malibu Hills along the Mulholland Highway and Cold Canyon Road. Police tell TMZ Hart was not driving at the time of the crash. The driver of the vehicle also sustained major back injuries. A woman who was also in the car at the time of the crash didn’t require treatment. KABC reports that the three were riding in Hart’s 1970 Plymouth Barracuda when the driver lost control, veered off the road and rolled down an embankment. Authorities say the driver hadn’t been drinking at the time of the crash. 707

(CNN) -- A 13-year-old New Jersey boy faces assault charges for allegedly attacking the mother of a classmate, after the classmate reported him to school officials for anti-immigrant taunts, the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said in a media release. The mother, identified as Beronica Ruiz by her attorney, Daniel Santiago, told authorities she was walking down a street in Passaic, New Jersey, with her 1-year-old baby and her 12-year-old son on June 19 when she and her son were attacked.Santiago told CNN that the conflict began at school the day before the attack, when the 13-year-old and some other boys chanted "go back to Mexico" to a group of students in the cafeteria.Ruiz's son, who is an American citizen, replied, "What are you talking about? We all come from immigrants," the attorney said. The group allegedly threatened to beat up the boy after school. This scared Ruiz's son, so he pulled one of the teachers aside and conveyed his fear, according to Santiago. The teacher called a security guard, who then sequestered Ruiz's son in a classroom for the duration of the school day for his own safety, he said.Later that day, Ruiz picked up her son from school. As they were walking home, Ruiz's son said to her, "Mommy, the boys that threatened me yesterday are following us," Santiago said. They kept walking, but the three boys caught up to them, the attorney said.Santiago told CNN that the 13-year-old punched Ruiz's son in the face, knocking him to the ground. Ruiz then put herself between her son and the assailant, asking him to leave them alone, the attorney said. He swore at her, then punched Ruiz in the face, Santiago said."When the mother stepped in front of (the boy), he struck her, causing her to temporarily lose consciousness and fall to the sidewalk,'' the statement from the prosecutor's office said. The three boys then fled the scene. Ruiz called the police after she regained consciousness, and she was treated at a nearby hospital for facial fractures and a concussion. Her son suffered a swollen lip, Santiago said. The physical pain is healing, but the emotional wounds still lingerThe 13-year-old was charged with aggravated assault and later released to his parents, authorities said. He has not been identified publicly because he is a minor. There is no court date as of yet, said Jason Harding, chief assistant prosecutor at the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office. If convicted on the assault charge, the boy faces up to two years in juvenile detention. The school, Passaic Gifted and Talented Academy, has offered to pay for Ruiz's medical bills, Santiago said. CNN has reached out to the school's principal and the superintendent's office for comment.Ruiz's physical injuries are starting to heal, and the pain is starting to fade, but she's terrified for the safety of her son, the attorney said."The emotional scar is what the biggest issue is," Santiago said.Santiago said parents of other children have since called him and told him their children have also been bullied by the same group of kids. 3057

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A report of two men going door to door in a Chula Vista neighborhood with a COVID-related offer is raising alarm bells. The knock at the door came just past 6:30 p.m. Friday. Two men, their masks pulled below their mouths, were standing outside Anna's home near Southwestern College."Can I help you?" she is heard asking in her Ring doorbell video.Anna's question gets an odd reply."We're looking for the queen of the castle," said the man at the door.Moments later, the man at the door makes his pitch."We're going door to door doing COVID testing. Have you been tested?" he asks.Anna, an ICU social worker, sensed something shady."I work at a hospital. No, no, no. Goodbye!" she exclaimed in the video.Just 10 minutes prior, the man who was standing back in the video, was at the home of neighbor Alice Segobia with a different offer."He asked about new metering that was coming. Asked if I was the homeowner. I lied to get him out of the house, said I didn't own my home," said Segobia.Segobia also abruptly said goodbye, so she never found out what he was after. But minutes later, the other man's COVID-19 test offer is one James Lee of the Identity Theft Resource Center is familiar with. He points to reports of door-to-door COVID testing scams a month ago, especially in the Midwest. Often, there is a promise of a test that never happens."What they're really after is personal information ... It ends up someone divulging credit or debit card information and nothing ever arrives," said Lee."To prey on people's fears at this time and to take advantage of them is a horrible thing to do," said Anna. Anna did call police, but the men were gone by the time the officers arrived.Anyone who encounter a similar door-to-door offer is asked to call Chula Vista Police at (619) 691-5151. 1829
