TAMPA, Fla. – A Tampa boy received a big surprise from his hero for his third birthday.City of Tampa worker Leroy Lentz says each morning he goes out to collect waste, Marlon waits for him to greet him with excitement. The two have become good friends and for Leroy, their chats and waves never fail to brighten his day.To show appreciation for Marlon, Leroy and Tampa’s Management Department teamed up to bring a socially-distant party over to the little boy’s neighborhood. On Tuesday, the community held a birthday parade to celebrate Marlon, and Leroy was able to surprise the little boy with cake and a toy garbage truck.“The Department really appreciates those customers who take time to say hello and thank you. Recognizing the impact these essential workers have in our community is so appreciated,” Mayor Jane Castor’s office said in a statement. “We are thrilled to give Marlon a birthday to remember.”Below is the video of the festivities: This story originally reported by KJ Hiramoto on abcactionnews.com. 1029

The assistant commandant of the Marine Corps has tested positive for the coronavirus, days after he and members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff were in a Pentagon meeting with a Coast Guard leader who was infected with the virus. The Marine Corps says Gen. Gary L. Thomas tested positive for COVID-19. He attended a meeting of the Joint Chiefs on Friday. U.S. officials say none of the other top military leaders in the meeting, including Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have so far tested positive. Still, his positive test raises worrying questions about the health of the others at the meeting, including the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and National Guard. 710

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida Education Association announced a lawsuit against the state's emergency order that forces districts to physically reopen public schools five days a week in August, despite concerns from parents and educators regarding the spread of COVID-19.The lawsuit was filed Monday in state circuit court in Miami against Gov. DeSantis, Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran, the Florida Board of Education and Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Gimenez. The lawsuit contends that ordering a return to on-site instruction at public schools is a violation of Florida’s Constitution and requests a declaration that the state defendants’ actions and inactions are unconstitutional. The suit also seeks a declaration from the court that the state's demands are "arbitrary and capricious" and seeks to prohibit the enforcement of the order.RELATED: Florida education commissioner calls school reopen lawsuit 'frivolous'The FEA contends the mandate does not allow districts enough time for effective planning, even when it comes to offering distance-learning options."As many districts were preparing to implement hybrid education models and online instruction initiatives, just weeks before the start of the school calendar, they now find themselves forced to crowd millions of students into schools where physical distancing, although critical, becomes virtually impossible," the lawsuit reads.View Lawsuit BelowThe state's largest teachers union also launched a petition to Gov. Ron DeSantis that says the state's students must not return to school campuses until steps are taken to reduce the rate of community spread of COVID-19."The rate of infection is growing at an alarming pace, yet little is being done to slow the spread and even less is being done to support a SAFE return to our schools," the FEA posted on their Facebook page. "We must demand our governor take all necessary steps to slow the infection rate in our state before our children return to brick and mortar schools." 2011

Students are demanding change after the deadly Florida High School shooting. On Monday, a group of teens from Maryland held a lie-in near the White House to stand with the victims of last week's mass shooting. The group, called Teens for Gun Reform, held the lie-in at 12:15 p.m. between the White House and Lafayette Park. Demonstrators lied on the ground for three minutes to symbolize how long it took the suspected gunman to buy the AR 15 rifle used in the attack. Many students who survived the shooting are now speaking out against gun violence. They are calling for a nationwide student and teacher walkout on March 14 to demand tougher gun laws. There are also talks of an anti-gun violence demonstration in Washington, D.C. and other cities across the country on March 24."My message for the people in office is you're either with us or against us. We are losing our lives while the adults are playing around," said Cameron Kasky, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas high student who survived last week's shooting.  1050

SUNSET CLIFFS, Calif., (KGTV) - There are mounting concerns about the stability of the some of the bluffs at Sunset Cliffs. The City of San Diego was tipped off about the cliff collapse near Hill Street last week. City crews surveyed the collapse then cordoned it off with yellow caution tape to discourage people from getting to close to the section in question. The city says the collapses are likely from rain. “There is a big crack there right up against the edge where it looks like that’s the next piece that’s going to fall,” said photographer Jim Grant, “it’s a good thing that somebody came in and put some protection up.” Grant spends nearly everyday photographing the cliffs and says he has seen his fair share of people getting too close. “They don’t realize that one slip and when you fall 60 or 70 feet, it leaves a permanent mark that’s for sure,” added Grant. Officials urge people to avoid the section that has collapsed and to always use caution when traversing through Sunset Cliffs. The city says it will have its engineers evaluate the section after this weekend’s weather before determining what steps to take next. 1145
