LOS ANGELES, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Global warming will melt all the ice in the Arctic Ocean every summer, raising earth temperatures even further, researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) warned.The findings, available online Sunday in the April issue of Earth and Planetary Science Letters, a leading journal in geoscience, were based on analysis of the fossilized remains of four-million-year-old mollusks, they said.Two novel geochemical techniques used to determine the temperature at which the mollusk shells were formed suggest that summertime Arctic temperatures during the early Pliocene epoch (3.5 million to 4 million years ago) may have been a staggering 18 to 28 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than today, the researchers said.And these ancient fossils, harvested from deep within the Arctic Circle, may have once lived in an environment in which the polar ice cap melted completely during the summer months, according to the researchers.Such balmy polar weather would certainly melt all the ice in the Arctic Ocean every summer, said Aradhna Tripani, an assistant professor at the UCLA's departments of Earth and space sciences."Our data from the early Pliocene, when carbon dioxide levels remained close to modern levels for thousands of years, may indicate how warm the planet will eventually become if carbon dioxide levels are stabilized at the current value of 400 parts per million," she said.The earth's temperature was raised five to nine degrees Fahrenheit merely by the absence of year-round Arctic ice, according to Tripani.The results of the study lend support to assertions made by climate modelers that summertime sea ice may be eliminated in the next 50 to 100 years, which would have far-reaching consequences for Earth's climate, she said."The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change identifies the early Pliocene as the best geological analog for climate change in the 21st century and beyond," said Tripati. "The climate-modeling community hopes to use the early Pliocene as a benchmark for testing models used for forecasting future climate change."
BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhuanet) -- No formalin has been found in the milk powder imported from S. Korea into China due to different milk sources, the general agency of South Korea's Maeil Dairies said Tuesday.The declaration came after Maeil Dairies, South Korea's third-largest dairy company, was found to have produced milk from cows given feed tainted with formalin.The agency said that the milk used in the dairy products exported to China comes from New Zealand, Europe and other places outside South Korea, so Chinese consumers should have nothing to worry about.Formalin, a liquid form of formaldehyde gas, was largely used in the past as a disinfectant, pesticide and bactericide for preservation of biological specimens.Its use has dwindled over the years due to health concerns.After the incident, South Korea has decided to conduct emergency inspections on milk sold in the market by four major dairy companies, to check the presence of formalin.
BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Google Inc. is working with MasterCard Inc. and Citigroup Inc to develop a technology that could make mobile payments, according to media reports Monday.The new technology named "Nexus S Android" is embedded in Android mobile devices and allows customers to make purchases by waving their smartphones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter.Credit-card reader producer VeriFone Systems Inc, also involved in the new payment service, is developing contact-less devices that could allow people to pay with a wave or tap of credit card or a tap of smartphone.To use the service, holders of Citigroup-issued debit and credit cards must activate a mobile-payment application developed for one current model of Android phones. More models will be coming as the technology advances.Besides mobile payment, consumers would also be able to get targeted ads or discount offers, manage credit-card accounts and track spending through an application on their smartphones.Due to the deliberate design of the technology, customers have no need to worry about the security of their payment information. Nick Holland, a mobile-transactions analyst at Yankee Group, said the new technology is more sophisticated than credit cards with a magnetic stripe.With the coming service, Google is aiming to boost its advertising business by offering retailers more data about their customers and help them target ads and discount offers to mobile-device users near their stores.An insider told that Google was not expected to get a cut of the transaction fees.The service is expected to be released this year. SAN FRANCISCO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft Corp. on Thursday posted quarterly revenue and earnings that both beat analysts' expectations.In its fiscal 2011 third quarter ended on March 31, the software giant reported revenue of 16.43 billion U.S. dollars, up 13 percent from the same period a year earlier.Net income and earnings per share were 5.23 billion dollars and 61 cents, representing increases of 31 percent and 36 percent respectively year-on-year.Analysts had expected earnings of 56 cents per share on revenue of 16.19 billion dollars, according to Thomson Reuters."We delivered strong financial results despite a mixed PC environment, which demonstrates the strength and breadth of our businesses," Peter Klein, chief financial officer at Microsoft, said in a statement."Consumers are purchasing Office 2010, Xbox and Kinect at tremendous rates, and businesses of all sizes are purchasing Microsoft platforms and applications," he added.Revenue at four of Microsoft's five major divisions posted double-digit growth in the quarter, indicating the increase of technology spending by enterprises as well as strong demand for the company's entertainment products.The entertainment and devices division saw the biggest revenue growth of 60 percent, which according to Microsoft, were driven by strong demand for its Kinect hands-free motion control system for Xbox 360 and continued strong sales of Xbox 360 console.However, revenue for the division of the company's flagship Windows operating system dropped 4 percent in the quarter, which Microsoft said was "in line with the PC trends."The performance of the Windows division may fuel new concerns that Microsoft's dominance in software for PCs is being threatened by Apple's iPad and tablet computers running other operating systems, some analysts noted.
