A new report through the Brookings Institute found that COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death for Black Americans.A former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agrees with that.The Brookings report looks deeper at disparities. It says the mortality rate for Black Americans is more than twice that for Asian or white Americans.“So, only cancer and heart disease will kill more African Americans this year,” said Trevon Logan, a professor of economics at The Ohio State University. “So, things like stroke, diabetes, all of those are taking a back seat to the coronavirus.”Logan is one of the authors of the report, which finds the impact of the pandemic has disproportionately hit Black Americans in terms of health and money.Some of the contributing problems are a lack of access to care, more dense housing making it easier to be exposed to the virus, African Americans are more likely to be front line workers, and they’re more likely to be in low-wage jobs that have led to high levels of unemployment.“We were devasted in the last great recession and were only beginning to come out of that tunnel, that dark tunnel, in the last year,” said Logan. “So, these setbacks that are experienced by the African American community both in terms of health and economically are simply a different, or a magnitude that they are for the population overall.”Logan says the pandemic has exposed the lack of a safety net to get us through times of crisis. A public housing building in Cleveland Heights, Ohio has become a target for at least one scammer posing as a nurse and offering free cancer screenings. But instead of giving people help, she walks away with personal information.One victim, Azzizat Crumble said she was flipping through the channels on Saturday when she heard a knock on the door."Opened the door and she said she was from Stephanie Tubbs' and they were going around doing cancer screenings," Crumble said.The woman was dressed in scrubs and even offering an incentive.  "If we were to agree to it, we would get a 0 gift card to Walmart in the mail," Crumble said.Crumble said it's not uncommon to see nurses in her assisted living building, so she agreed."She was like, 'Before we do it, I am going to need to see your ID and Medicaid card.' So I went and got it and she wrote the information down in a notebook," Crumble recalled.The woman then proceeded to swab Crumble's cheeks and was on her way within 10 minutes."And then she was like, 'Okay, well you will receive your card within five to seven business days," said Crumble.Crumble said she didn't think anything of it until she saw a sign on a bulletin board in the hallway of her complex. "Scam alert: If anyone comes to your door asking for your personal information, call the police immediately," Crumble said the sign read.Crumble said her social security number was on the Medicaid card she gave the woman, so she has since been monitoring her credit activity.Police say this is an on-going investigation. They believe at least four people were targeted, two of which handed over their personal information. Police say they do have a person of interest and potentially two others.  1848

A preliminary report from the autopsy on Mollie Tibbetts' body determined that her death was a homicide resulting from multiple sharp force injuries, the Iowa State Medical Examiner said.Tibbetts, a 20-year-old student at the University of Iowa, went missing after an evening jog on July 18, sparking a major search in the region. A body that officials believed to be hers was found on Tuesday in a rural area, hidden under corn stalks, and the autopsy confirmed her identity.Cristhian Bahena Rivera, a 24-year-old Mexican man who illegally came to the United States, was charged with her murder on Wednesday after he confessed to following her on her run. In an arrest affidavit, Rivera said he remembered getting mad at her; what happened afterward was "blocked" from his memory. 789

A study conducted by Stanford researchers found nearly 10% of those tested exhibited coronavirus antibodies. The study was published in the Lancet earlier this week.The study involved dialysis patients and randomly tested over 28,000 samples. The samples were taken in July as part of the patients’ treatment.The data found stark differences based on region. The northeast around 27% of patients with coronavirus antibodies, compared to 3.5% in the west.The study’s authors stressed that the study oversampled minorities. Minorities, the study found, were considerably more likely to have coronavirus antibodies than the rest of the population.“Uncertainty exists as to whether seroprevalence estimates in the dialysis population can be extrapolated to the US population more broadly,” the study reads.The study indicated that herd immunity is still far off, as estimates say at a minimum, 50% of the US population would need to be infected to reach that level. 969

A search for a missing 5-year-old boy in Tennessee turned into a homicide investigation Saturday after authorities arrested his father.Joe Clyde Daniels' parents reported him missing Wednesday, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. It issued an Endangered Child Alert as hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement officers frantically searched near Joe's home in Dickson, Tennessee."After a three-day search, it was determined that the child's father, Joseph Daniels, intentionally killed his son sometime during the night of April 3-4, in their residence and then hid his son's body," the TBI said.The boy's father confessed to killing his son, Dickson County Sheriff Jeff Bledsoe said. 714
