There was no question when Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter retired in 2014 that he would be a Hall of Famer. The only question was whether he would be a unanimous selection. On Tuesday, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced that Jeter and former Rockies and Expos hitter Larry Walker have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Jeter was just one vote shy of becoming the first position player to be unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame, and only the second Hall of Famer in history to receive 100% votes. Former Yankees closer Mariano Rivera remains the only player to receive 100% of the vote from baseball writers. Jeter had 396 out of 397 possible votes.Rivera and Yankees won five World Series together with the Yankees. Jeter is No. 6 all-time in hits; No. 11 all-time in runs scored; and a five-time Gold Glove winner.Walker was a five-time All Star and was the 1997 MVP. Walker made it into Hall of Fame after being on the ballot for 10 years. He obtained 76% of the vote, 1% more needed for induction, after garnering 54% of the vote last year.Just missing election was Curt Schilling who failed to reach the 75% threshold for induction for the eighth straight year. He was just shy with 70% of the vote. Also failing to make the ballot was pitcher Roger Clemens and outfielder Barry Bonds. Despite having statistics worthy of Hall induction, both players' careers were marred by allegations that they used performance enhancing drugs. Clemens and Bonds both earned 61% of the vote. 1520

Tune in at 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PT for the third Democratic Party presidential debate, featuring the top 10 candidates in the Democratic field based on polling. The candidatesFormer Vice President Joe BidenNew Jersey Sen. Cory BookerSouth Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete ButtigiegFormer Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián CastroCalifornia Sen. Kamala HarrisMinnesota Sen. Amy KlobucharFormer Texas Rep. Beto O'RourkeVermont Sen. Bernie SandersMassachusetts Sen. Elizabeth WarrenEntrepreneur Andrew YangThe candidates on stage qualified by having 130,000 unique donors by Aug. 28, and earning 2 percent in four polls that sample voters nationally or in the states of New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, or South Carolina. A large field of candidates did not qualify for Thursday's debate. Candidates who appeared in previous debates such as Rep. Tim Ryan, Mayor Bill DeBlasio, Gov. Steve Bullock, author Marianne Williamson, Sen. Michael Bennet, Rep. John Delaney and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard failed to qualify. The aforementioned candidates have until Oct. 1 to qualify for the next debate in October. Activist Tom Steyer, who has not yet appeared in a debate, has recently qualified for the October debate, meaning the next debate could revert back to a two-night format. ModeratorsABC News' David Muir and Linsey Davis will join Univision anchor Jorge Ramos as moderators. Ramos and Muir, at separate events, moderated Democratic Party debates leading up to the 2016 election. Muir also moderated a Republican Party debate in 2016. FormatThe debate will mark the longest one so far in this debate season going a full three hours. Each candidate will be given one minute and 15 seconds for direct responses to questions, and 45 seconds for responses and rebuttals. Candidates will have the opportunity to deliver opening statements, but there will be no closing statements, ABC said. The top 10 on one stageThursday is arguably the night many voters have waited for with the entire top 10 slate of candidates on one stage. For instance, this is the first time that Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden will share a stage. Will Warren take a shot at Biden now that she has the opportunity? We'll find out on Thursday. 2212

The Trump administration filed a regulation Monday that could dramatically limit the ability of Central American migrants to claim asylum if they enter the United States by land through Mexico, according to a document filed by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security in the Federal Register. The regulation is the latest attempt by the Trump administration to toughen the US asylum process and has the potential of affecting a large swath of migrants journeying to the US-Mexico border. CNN previously reported that President Donald Trump had been considering the regulation. The regulation would prohibit migrants who have resided in a third country from seeking asylum in the US. It would, therefore, bar migrants transiting through Mexico from being able to claim asylum and as a result, drastically limit who's eligible for asylum. The regulation is an interim final rule, which allows the new restrictions to go into effect immediately. 962

The Trump administration on Tuesday announced it is stopping imports of clothing, gold, diamonds and other items believed to have been produced with forced labor by companies based in Brazil, China and Malaysia as well as some gold mined in eastern Congo and diamonds from a region in Zimbabwe. An official at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Brenda Smith, said her agency issued orders to immediately detain the goods at U.S. ports of entry for further investigation. The move comes amid a wide-ranging trade dispute between the U.S. and China, which has led to new tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of goods.Smith says the “message here is that one of the ways the U.S. and China can collaborate together is to ensure that forced labor is not used.”She said the companies can re-export the detained shipments or submit information to show they’re legal. The companies sanctioned are Bonechar Carv?o Ativado Do Brasil Ltda; Hetian Taida Apparel Co., Ltd. in Xinjiang, China and WRP Asia Pacific Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia. The action also covers gold mined at small artisan mines in eastern Congo and rough diamonds from the Marange diamond fields in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwe’s government in a statement called the U.S. decision “a blatant and shameless lie.” The Marange region was in the spotlight a decade ago over alleged army killings of artisanal miners and forced labor. The fields are now commercially mined. 1434

The US economy added 224,000 jobs in June, a strong comeback for the labor market after a disappointing May.The unemployment rate rose to 3.7%, the highest level since March 2019 but still historically low.The number substantially beat the expectations of analysts, who had forecast a drag on jobs because of business uncertainty around high trade tensions as well as a lackluster housing market.Adding to the positive story, 335,000 people entered the labor force in June — substantially more than usual — which may have been what pushed the unemployment rate up slightly. It's a remarkable feat for an economy that has been soaking up workers for 106 straight months now, and an indication that people are still finding reasons to go back to work. The number looks more like the more robust 2018 monthly job gain average than the lower average so far in 2019, forestalling concerns about a sharp slowdown even as indicators of business sentiment have turned negative.Wages rose 3.1% from a year earlier, slightly lower than forecast but still reasonably strong. The largest gains came in health care and professional and business services, although manufacturing turned in a robust 17,000 jobs after four months of little change — a surprise turnaround for an industry that has been flagging with higher raw material costs due to tariffs and the downturn of world trade. 1382
