SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A sea lion pup in Encinitas was saved Tuesday from a diver's mask that was tightly wrapped around its neck.The year-old sea lion pup was found at Swami's Beach with a diver's mask wrapped around its neck. The sea lion, which only weighed about 32 pounds, appeared malnourished and dehydrated, according to SeaWorld rescue team members.The mask had been wrapped around the sea lion's neck for weeks, preventing the pup from foraging and eating.RELATED: Sea lion lies down in front of San Diego hotel's sign, refuses to budgeHad the mask remained on the pup, the animal would likely have eventually starved to death or been strangled by the mask, crews said.Rescue team members cut the mask off the sea lion, but found that a wound caused by the mask had become infected. Crews took the pup to SeaWorld’s Animal Health and Rescue Center, where officials treated the sea lion's wound.Officials say other than the wound and undernourishment, the sea lion was in good health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shortage of labor is creating big problems for San Diego farmers. According to the San Diego Farm Bureau, the slowing workforce is expected to impact local farmers and the price we pay at the grocery store. The bureau says the problem stems from an aging work force, the lack of an easy-to-navigate visa program, and the cost of living in San Diego County. There is a visa program available, but for San Diego’s smaller farmers, the process is complicated and expensive. Created in 1986, the H-2A visa was designed to help understaffed farmers hire foreign workers. The problem? The visa program requires farmers to pay its H-2A employees a set minimum wage, .92 per-hour in California. Farmers are also required to provide housing, food and transportation to H-2A workers. California isn’t alone, other states like Idaho are also struggling to find help.According to an Idaho newspaper – The Post Register, a recent migrant shortage and costs associated with the program are forcing some farms out of business. Although times are tough for farmers in San Diego, the bureau says there is a solution – creating a boiled down visa program that simplifies things for farmers and the workers they need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at Shoal Creek Elementary School in Carmel Mountain is being honored as the 10News Classroom Hero.Throughout her teaching career, Lisa Ransom's message to her first graders has been: aim high and give back. “My goal for them is to see what they can do and to put away what they can’t do and work on moving forward,” said Ransom. In her first grade class, she puts extra emphasis on reading and writing, skills she believes are crucial for the children's future and development. “Knowing they are able to read is one thing but knowing that they are able to read to understand and read to learn, and to write to communicate ideas and thoughts. It’s something that is going to carry them throughout their lives,” said Ransom. Ransom’s love for her students is why Cate O’Reilly, a parent who has had three of her children in Mrs. Ransom’s class throughout the years, nominated Lisa Ransom as our Classroom Hero. “Everything she does is really about building up their self-esteem and helping them navigate through this tricky first grade,” O'Reilly said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A U.S. Marine stationed at MCAS Miramar has tested presumptive positive for coronavirus after returning from leave in Washington state.The Marine was returning to the base from leave in Washington state where he was visiting family, which is where officials believe he contracted the virus, officials on base familiar with the matter told 10News.A high level source in the military added that the Marine was tested on base for the virus after feeling ill and placed into quarantine while results were pending. The Marine is currently at home under quarantine, off base, that source added.A second Marine who returned from leave in Washington with the first service member is currently considered a person under investigation at Camp Pendleton.
