When he was a kid, memories were made on his family's farm in India.“Back then, every summer and winter vacation, I would spend my time there. I didn’t like agriculture back then, the farms didn’t have electricity or toilets. That exposed me to a lot of poverty, a lot of primitive forms of agriculture that was practiced in different parts of the world,” Chandra said.Now with a Ph.D. in computer science, he's directed that interest and curiosity toward a program within Microsoft that he leads called FarmBeats."Through this project, we want to build digital tools that can empower farmers worldwide, make their lives better, make the food they produce better,” Chandra said.Like its name, FarmBeats is centered around farms. Chandra and his team are working to bring computers and their data to farms. What if you could bring all the benefits of things like artificial intelligence, cutting edge computing and the latest digital tech to agriculture? Imagine just how it could improve a farmer's life and work.“Humans and machines need to work together. All the latest technologies we’re building when combined with human knowledge you can take them to a completely different level,” Chandra said.That next level is evident in a new partnership between Land O'Lakes and Microsoft.“Imagine a computer sitting in the barn, getting a lot of data from cameras and sensors so it can detect how the different cows are doing, whether it’s sick and in heat, what’s happening with each cow,” Chandra said.But, none of that can happen unless there's broadband. Enter in the "digital divide" which has become even more apparent during the pandemic. Land O'Lakes wants to not only bring that new tech to farmers, but bring everyone online at the same time.“A lot of our solutions were not working as well as they should have because of the connectivity issue. It hit us right in the face we’re talking about some really neat capabilities and technologies but we couldn’t use them because we didn’t have that connectivity in rural America,” said Teddy Bekele, chief technology officer at Land O'Lakes.Land O'Lakes, which brings you butter, milk and cheese, is also a farmer-owned cooperative with 2,000 dairy producers, 1,000 retailers and 300,000 farmers.“Having one farmer connected is not enough,” Bekele said, “you’ve got to have the whole community connected and if you think about bringing technology, it’s not just the household. We want the whole field.”He says drone footage bringing you data about your fields does not work if you don't have internet.“We’ve been working on a lot of novel solutions to bring to farmers, things from remote sensing, satellite and drone images to using crop models that use machine learning capabilities to help farmers make better decisions as well as a platform that helps with sustainability,” Bekele said.Farmers know so much about land. Technology will take the guesswork out of the farming industry. Things like how much you should water, when and where mapped out by data.“One of the things we’re building is a digital dairy platform, bringing different dairy management tools into one umbrella. The only thing that scares salon owner Shelly Albro more than the empty chairs inside her Portsmouth, New Hampshire barbershop is the silence that has consumed this place recently.Having lost 30 percent of her business because of COVID-19, Albro found herself in the same position as thousands of other small business owners across the country, desperate for new streams of revenue, while at the same time, having to keep her customers and staff safe.“I just knew that if I didn’t get creative we weren’t going to make any money,” she said. “Business was down.”Albro owns Gents Barbershop, which she recently opened.On a particularly depressing day during the shutdown, she had been searching through old photos when she stumbled upon an old black and white picture from the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. A few barbers stood wearing masks as they cut clients' hair, but instead of cutting hair inside a building, the barbers were standing out on the sidewalk in front of their store.She had found her solution.“When I saw this picture I was like, ‘I gotta do this outside!’ For those who are like me who are nervous to go inside,” she said.Unsure of how the idea would go over with customers, Albro first started cutting hair outside on her days off. Her schedule quickly booked up, as this upbeat stylist with a slight New England accent realized she’d struck a chord with her customers who were still too nervous to get their haircut inside a barbershop during COVID-19.And for Albro, who suffers from an autoimmune disease herself, the whole thing is personal.“There are a lot of people who have anxiety about coming inside a building. It doesn’t matter how much we clean or sanitize; they’re feeling anxious about coming inside,” she said. “Because I’m high risk, I get why people are reluctant.”Gents Barbershop isn't alone in moving hair cutting services outside. Back in July, California moved all salons outdoors to deal with a sudden spike in cases.Beth Milito with the National Federation of Independent Businesses is telling small business owners to follow Albro’s lead.“It’s been much more challenging than people anticipated back in March,” Milito explained.As small business owners continue to navigate an economic recession, Milito says that creativity and ingenuity are keys to a successful rebound, especially when more than 100,000 small businesses have already closed since March.“Looking at this as a long-term investment, something you can see into the future,” she added.As for Albro, she knows that like a good haircut this trend may fade away, but for now, she’s just trying to make a much deeper impression.“I just want to help,” she said. 2669

The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the second vaccine to receive the FDA’s emergency use authorization, is on its way to states, according to officials with Operation Warp Speed, the task force overseeing the nationwide vaccine distribution.During a press conference Saturday morning, U.S. General Gustave Perna, COO of Operation Warp Speed, said “distribution of (the) Moderna vaccine has already begun.”Moderna’s vaccine was approved for emergency use on Friday evening. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved for emergency use a week earlier.“Boxes are being packed and loaded today. Trucks will begin rolling out tomorrow, from FedEx and UPS, delivering vaccines and kits to the American people across the United States," Perna said. "This week, in total, between Pfizer and Moderna, we have allocated 7.9 million doses of vaccine."He also took responsibility for discrepancies state leaders reported last week citing reductions in the amount of Pfizer vaccine doses they would be receiving. More than a dozen states said they were told by the federal government that next week's shipment of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine would be 20-to-40% less than originally projected. Perna said they are keeping an eye on manufacturing numbers and adjusting distribution in the short-term. USA Today is reporting the discrepancy is because of how many vaccines are able to be approved by quality control measures and released for distribution, not just how many doses are manufactured. “I want to take personal responsibility for the miscommunication,” he said. “I know that’s not done much these days. But I am responsible.
