SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eve Ramirez made the difficult decision to close her City Heights taco shop when the coronavirus outbreak hit. She says she did it to protect her eight-month-old son. "I got scared to death," she said. "I was like, you know what, I had my baby boy in January, imagine something were to happen to me. I'm a single mom. I can't risk my baby's life. I immediately shut down without thinking twice."Ramirez, who owns Mexicali Street Tacos, is one of a large number of San Diegans now struggling to pay for basic necessities amid the pandemic. A San Diego Association of Governments study released Thursday says 71% of respondents reported not being able to pay for rent, food, and utilities, while two-thirds said the pandemic has negatively impacted their employment. Ramirez said she has received donated diapers from friends, is on Medi-Cal and is receiving government food allowances. "I had no choice but to apply for help," she said. More than 3,500 San Diego households responded to the survey, conducted via 23 community-based organizations. San Ysidro Health surveyed 300 families about the impact of the virus. Ana Melgoza, the organization's vice president of external affairs, says the virus has hit South Bay families particularly hard. She says many live in overcrowded homes due to high rent, and are forced to work in jobs that require interaction with the public such as in grocery stores and retail. "When you have people literally dying to go to work and provide for their families, we need to make sure health care is a priority for people so that when they do feel sick or are infected they have the right follow up care to manage and survive this deadly virus," Melgoza said. It's because the city - with a median home price of .7 million - has no affordable housing. "If they could live here and walk to work we'd get all kinds of benefits from that," said Del Mar Mayor Dwight Worden. To help make that happen, Del Mar may start charging developers of condos and condo conversions fees by the square foot. That could add to more than a hundred thousand dollars per project for affordable housing. Right now developers of those projects pay a flat fee of ,500, which hasn't been updated since 2007.The city council is considering a per square foot charge for existing construction and per square foot for new construction.The money would either go to expanding Del Mar's rent subsidy program, which currently assists five families in the city.Worden, however, said he prefers physical units because they are there forever. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Federal agents have been added to the investigation of a Kearny Mesa fire that gutted an off-roading business early Thursday morning.About 25 agents with National Response Team (NRT) of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) out of Los Angeles were requested by San Diego Fire-Rescue to assist with the probe.The NRT agents will arrive Friday and begin processing the scene at Off Road Warehouse Saturday, according to the ATF. They join other officials with ATF Los Angeles, SDFD, and the San Diego Police in the investigation. The fire comes five months after another fire ignited in November 2018. So far this season, 341 people have died from the flu including two new deaths reported over the last week.Those who died ranged in age from one to 101.The high number of deaths this season is a result of an unusually severe flu season, but was also due to better reporting and tracking, County Health and Human Services reported.“It appears that we’re at the end of this flu season,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “However, people should continue to take precautions to avoid contracting the virus.”In total, more than 20,000 lab-confirmed flu cases were reported this flu season compared to just over 5,400 the previous year. 880
