BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States on Monday agreed that Sino-U.S. relations had become one of the most dynamic and important bilateral relations in the world. BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese netizens have made their voices heard more loudly and their presence better recognized in headline news events over the past year.     When the Beijing Olympic torch relay overseas was disrupted in April, almost all the Chinese msn messenger users posted "I love China" beside their names, a move that looked "overwhelming" to Kevin, a French man who was living in Shanghai at the time.     As to domestic affairs, netizens did not sit aloof. After the dairy scandal emerged in September, netizens' strong criticisms finally led to the resignation of Li Changjiang, then director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     Yan Jirong, professor at Peking University's School of Government, said this incident showed the government was paying attention to public voices on the Internet.     A report released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Dec. 2 showed about 206 million Chinese use the Internet as their main source of news.     According to the China Internet Network Information Center, under-30s are the majority of online news readers, accounting for about 69 percent of total Internet users.     On June 20, Hu visited the Qiangguo Forum, which is affiliated to people.com.cn, and chatted with netizens. His blog was picked for pointing out the keyto China's new medical reform plan which is likely to be issued in January, reported the People's Daily.     Liao wrote on Dec. 25 that China should learn from other countries, such as Cuba, in drafting the long-delayed medical reform plan.     "The government is seeking new ways for the public to voice opinions," said Yan.     A survey taken by the China Youth Daily's poll center showed about 72 percent of those responding hoped the Internet would be anew path to democracy. More than half of those surveyed said the exchanges on the Internet helped to bring the government closer to the public.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is actively promoting the relief of tension in Gaza, and China is ready to work with the international community to bring all the parties concerned back to the negotiation table at an early date in a bid to achieve the peaceful, just and durable settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.     Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Gaza conflict, which has left more than 900 Palestinians killed and 4,000 others injured.     Zhang told the Security Council that the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue, Sun Bigan, began his visit to Egypt, Israel and Palestine on Sunday for mediation for peace in the region.     China is gravely concerned about the growing escalation of tension in Gaza, and it is regrettable to see that the new Security Council resolution, adopted last Thursday to call for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, went unheeded by warring parties, he said.     At present, the top priority is to achieve the full implementation of the UN truce resolution -- the immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a halt to the firing of rockets into Israel by the armed Palestinian faction, and unimpeded access of Gaza to the humanitarian relief goods, he said.     At the Tuesday council meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed 15 council members on his upcoming visit to the Middle East, which will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait. 

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao urged the promotion of stable agricultural and rural economic development and said issues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers should continue to be the top priority of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     Hu, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday. Attendees at the meeting studied the means to promote agricultural modernization with Chinese characteristics.     Maintaining stable agricultural and rural economic development was more important under current circumstance, Hu said.     Agricultural production was the basic support to stimulate economic growth; rural areas had the potential to boost domestic demand; and to improve farmers' living standards was a major task and also a difficult job, he said.     He called for more efforts on three major tasks of agricultural work.     First, greater importance should be laid on ensuring the country's grain security and supplies of major agricultural products.     The country should stick to the most strict system to protect and save farming land as well as stabilize the grain sowing area, Hu said.     He said the government should increase subsidies for agricultural production and continue to raise the minimum state purchasing prices for grain.     In the latest move to protect farmers' interests and boost grain output, the National Development and Reform Commission said Saturday it would raise the minimum state purchasing prices for rice in major rice-producing areas by as much as 16.9 percent this year.     Hu also stressed the quality supervision and monitoring of agricultural products to ensure food safety.     Second, more importance should be attached to promote rural infrastructure construction as well as improve social welfare and living standard of farmers, he said.     He urged increasing capital input in infrastructure construction and rural social welfare and said greater efforts should be made to improve rural education, medical services and poverty alleviation.     Third, an array of measures should be taken to promote the growth of farmers' income and expand the rural market, Hu said.     He urged more efforts to discover new measures and channels to boost farmers' income and improve the commodity circulation network in rural areas.     The program of subsidized home appliance, autos and motorcycles should be promoted, he said.     He also urged quality authorities to make best efforts to protect farmers' interests and avoid fake and shabby products flowing in to rural markets.     Speaking of rural workers employment, Hu said governments should encourage enterprises to be more responsible and employ more rural workers.     The governments could also provide more job opportunities for rural workers by letting them work on the infrastructure projects amid the country's efforts to boost domestic demand, he said.     More support should be given to migrant workers who returned because of employment difficulty in cities and encourage them to start their own businesses, Hu said.     He also suggested Party leaders and governments at all levels should apply the scientific outlook on development to their work to deal with the emerging problems and challenges facing agricultural and rural economic development, and contribute more to promoting rural reform, development and stability.

LANZHOU, Nov.18 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in northwest China's Gansu Province have put the violent protest under control after a group of petitioners attacked local government buildings on Monday night, said a provincial government official.     The protesters have left the government building and the social order has resumed normal in Longnan City, where the unrest erupted, on Tuesday night.     More than 30 residents in Dongjiang Town, Wudu District, who faced resettlement, gathered at the city's government around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, asking the authorities for proper solutions concerning their farmland, housing and livelihoods.     The unrest resulted from a planned relocation of the city's government which would force the residents to be resettled.     The protesters talked with some officials on Monday but they failed to reach any agreement. On Monday night, more people joined them and some of the protesters attacked government buildings, damaged vehicles and facilities, and injured some policemen who tried to maintain order, according to a report of the provincial government.     The government's relocation plan has not been approved by the central government yet, the report said.
