ROSARITO, Mexico (KGTV) - With the San Diego region's high cost of living, many are making their move south of the border to save money.For Marilyn Widd, every moment with her granddaughter Gracie is special when she visits her at a home in Vista."The area is beautiful. I love it," said Widd.Four years ago, Widd and her husband briefly thought about retiring in San Diego County. We do get to travel," said Widd.She's not alone. Various estimates put the number of Americans living in Rosarito between 12,000 and 15,000. In the past few years, U.S. citizens have reported that number is increasing, especially among those under the age of 50 who commute to San Diego. Widd has seen it firsthand. Usually the number is closer to one volunteer. You have to think it's about the cost of living for them," said Widd.Like those commuters, Widd is a part-time San Diegan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The world's smallest surviving baby went home healthy after being delivered at a San Diego hospital at only 23 weeks. Saybie was delivered in December of 2018 at 23 weeks and three days at San Diego’s Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns. According to the hospital, Saybie’s mother gave birth after experiencing severe pregnancy complications. When she was born, Saybie weighed 8.6 ounces, about as much as a large apple, according to the hospital. After her birth, the hospital’s life support team rushed to stabilize her before she was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit. Saybie was sent home in mid-May at a healthy 5 pounds. "No one expects their baby to be born with complications," said Trisha Khaleghi, senior vice president and chief executive officer at Sharp Mary Birch. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Marcos family is dealing with an unbearable loss. The Houghton family was involved in a horrific crash that killed their 13-year-old son, Bryce, Saturday night on the 405 in Orange County. The family of five was headed to San Luis Obispo to visit relatives, according to Michael Houghton. Their 17-year-old daughter was driving, when their van began to slow down. Michael says it seemed like it was running out of gas. It stopped in the HOV lane. Michael, his wife, and three kids decided to stay in the van buckled up and call for help. While they waited for 911 and a tow truck, CHP says a pickup truck slammed into the van. Another vehicle hit the pickup truck after the initial crash. The CHP arrested the driver of the pickup truck on suspicion of DUI. Officers said the driver of the pickup had major injuries. Four people in the third vehicle received minor injuries. Michael described his youngest son as a jovial person who loved to make people smile. “Short in stature but big in personality,” Michael said. “One of the things he loved the most was to make people happy.” The Houghton’s other two children, 15-year-old Mason, and 17-year-old Carissa, received minor injuries, though Mason will be on crutches, according to his dad. Michael’s wife, Gael, needed surgery. Michael received injuries to the back of his head, and injuries to his eye that had previously undergone a procedure. The family was very involved with Anthem Church in Vista, as well as Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside. The Houghtons had organized an event for the homeless on the Saturday before the crash.
