SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California’s coronavirus cases are surging and health officials say social gatherings and people not wearing masks or keeping their distance are fueling the rise. Yet it’s businesses that are paying the price in the form of revenue-sapping restrictions. Business owners say that’s not fair and some medical experts say they have a point. Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a professor who specializes in infectious diseases at the University of California, San Francisco, said restrictions targeting entire classes of businesses aren't very fine-tuned and don't address specific activities that are driving the increase. 635

SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - A former San Diegan who lives 3 miles from the site of a deadly, massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, is describing the terrifying moments of the blast. Elie Shammas and his family were inside their 6-story Beirut apartment. It all began just after 6pm, and it felt like an earthquake."In San Diego, feels like a rumble, but this was a jittery," said Shammas.Shammas, who taught at SDSU a decade ago, says all his locked windows swung open."The whole house was moving, and then the shock wave hit us. It was very loud. Outside, it was all dusty. I have three kids, who were jittery and scared," said Shammas.Shammas raced downstairs and snapped a photo of a huge smoke plume. Shammas says he can't help but recall Lebanon's bloody civil war."I lived through Lebanon through the war. I'm used to bombings and shellings, and this was like nothing I've seen before," said Shammas.Across the world, in San Diego, news of the blast hitting the Lebanese community hard."Just a shock. When you see it, you can't believe it's happening," said Shammas.Nabi Geha, who owns La Miche Kabobgee in Kearny Mesa, immediately called his niece and a cousin, who both live about four miles from the blast site. Both are okay but shaken."They woke up to huge impact. Their buildings were shaken. Cars lifted from one side street and thrown to other side," said Geha.Geha's anxiety over his family still lingers. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A lawyer for the man who styled the hair of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says he believes she was set up when she went to a San Francisco salon that wasn't permitted to have indoor services because of the coronavirus pandemic. Pelosi is facing backlash after Fox News Channel aired footage showing the speaker walking through the salon without a mask on. But a lawyer for the stylist says the owner gave permission for the appointment and made “vitriolic and incendiary comments" about Pelosi. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Zoo got quite a surprise this week when one of its Siamang Apes gave birth.It was a surprise because zoo officials had no idea the mother, Eloise, was pregnant.The zoo confirmed the birth to 10News, saying Eloise had been on birth control.The baby was born Monday morning.SDSU student Francelia Amaya was there shortly after the birth. She has been observing the Siamang apes for the past few months as part of a project for her Anthropology class.Amaya says Eloise had been acting oddly that morning."She was really uncomfortable," says Amaya. "She was trying to find the right position. There were a lot of odd behaviors."Amaya got a few pictures and cell phone video of Eloise holding the new baby and swinging around the ape enclosure with the newborn in her arms.Eloise and the baby were taken out of the exhibit shortly after the birth, as was the father. All three are in observation right now.According to the zoo's website, Eloise is "is the best mom a young siamang could hope to have. She's had lots of practice, having given birth to seven youngsters over the years."The zoo says Siamangs are one of a few primate species that form permanent pairs. Eloise and the father, Unkie, have been together since 1987.There's no word from the zoo about how long they'll be kept out of the public eye. 1353
