BRUSSELS, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- China expected France to take new steps in pushing the European Union (EU) for positive policies toward China, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Monday.The relations between China and France were of important influence to China's links with the EU, said Wen during a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy on the sidelines of an Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit in Brussels.China attached great importance to developing ties with France and appreciated France's willingness to enhance cooperation with China, said Wen. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) meets with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Brussels, Belgium, Oct. 4, 2010. He is also to attend the a China-EU summit in Brussels and then continue his four-nation visit which also will take him to Italy and Turkey.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin on Friday called for broader and deeper exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan, and stressed the role of cultural exchanges.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks in Shanghai at a forum of social groups of Taiwan compatriots.Historic changes have been achieved in cross-Strait relations in recent years along with a series of positive results, and a favorable situation of peaceful development has emerged, Jia said.He said the fields of exchanges should be expanded to promote cross-Strait exchanges.He welcomed more Taiwan compatriots to visit the Chinese mainland in the future to enhance their understanding of the mainland's social and economic development, and encouraged more mainlanders to travel to Taiwan, especially to the central and southern parts of the island.He also hoped that compatriots home and abroad would participate and promote cross-Strait exchanges and benefit from them.The top political advisor also said cultural exchanges must be enhanced.Both sides across the Strait should work together to promote the Chinese culture and increase its influence.Lien Chan, honorary chairman of the Kuomintang Party (KMT), said at the forum that it was not easy to achieve the current peaceful, stable and rapidly developing state of cross-Strait relations.He urged both sides to cherish such a historic opportunity and lay the groundwork for peace, prosperity and sustainable development across the Strait.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- China will unswervingly promote the policy of reform and opening up, while creating sound environment for foreign companies operating in China, Vice Premier Wang Qishan told senior U.S. officials Monday.Wang exchanged views on China-U.S. ties and economic and trade cooperation with Lawrence Summers, head of U.S. President Barack Obama's National Economic Council, and Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, in a meeting in Beijing.Wang said the two countries should bolster cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, investment, finance, new energy and infrastructure upgrading, as their economies are interdependent and complimentary to each other.China is ready to work with the United States to well implement consensus reached by state leaders of the two countries, for sustainable, healthy and steady development of bilateral ties, he said.Wang said the international community should enhance cooperation because the world economy, though on the way to recovery, still encounters twists and turns.He said China is focusing on the change of the growth pattern for more balanced development of the economy.Summers and Donilon briefed Wang on the U.S. economy and the Obama administration's measures to stimulate the economy and create jobs.They stressed that the United States and China should strengthen coordination in macro policies and promote cooperation for a strong, balanced and sustainable growth of global economy.Also on Monday, Li Yuanchao, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with the two U.S. officials.Li, also head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said the Sino-U.S. ties had maintained a stable development since President Obama took office.China would work with the United States to enhance dialogues and cooperation, while properly handling the differences, to push forward the bilateral ties, he said.8 Summers said the United States attached great importance to the U.S.-Sino relations and firmly believed that the two countries had broad interests and faced with common challenges, including sustainable development of global economy, regional security and climate change.He said the United States was committed to working with China for a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also met with Summers and Donilon on Monday. TOKYO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said Friday that China and Japan, the two major economic powers in Asia, need to work toward improving bilateral relations."It is true that Japan-China relations have shown signs of deterioration," Sengoku, Japan's top government spokesman, said at a press conference, adding that efforts were needed to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.The comments came as the Naha, Okinawa, prosecutor's office said Friday it will release Zhan Qixiong, the 41-year-old Chinese fishing boat captain who has been held for more than two weeks.Two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands on Spet. 7.The next day, the Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained its captain and 14 fishermen on board, drawing strong protests from the Chinese government and its people.The Japanese released the fishermen and boat last week but held the captain. China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally send back the captain to avoid additional damage to their bilateral ties.According to local media, Zhan was to leave Japan on Friday. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said the same day the Chinese government would send a chartered plane to bring back the captain.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed its hope that East Asian cooperation would deepen through the upcoming series of leaders' meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam."China attaches importance to and actively takes part in East Asian cooperation. In the series of meetings, China will review with other countries the cooperation that has been carried out and discuss how to further promote the integration process of East Asian cooperation," said Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue.Hu made the remarks at a press conference Thursday afternoon in which officials from the ministries of Commerce, Education and Finance briefed the press on Premier Wen Jiabao's scheduled attendance at the meetings.The meetings, lasting from Oct. 28 to 30, will include: the 13th summit between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (10+1); the 13th summit between ASEAN, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) (10+3); and the fifth East Asia Summit.Wen will also attend a meeting with the leaders of Japan and the ROK.Hu said China hopes the meetings would promote good-neighborliness and boost cooperation between China and the other Asian countries."During his visit, Premier Wen, together with participating leaders of other countries, will review the achievements of China-ASEAN cooperation, 10+3 cooperation, and East Asian cooperation, as well as cooperation concerning East Asia Summit. He will also elaborate on how to strengthen cooperation.
