SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The group of individuals assigned with making a recommendation on the appropriateness of the Aztec mascot will not be named, according to San Diego State University officials.SDSU Sally Roush says intends to make decision about the mascot no later than May 31 after a recommendation made by the ‘Aztec task force’ April 30.RELATED: Should SDSU get rid of it's Aztec Warrior mascot? The task force includes five students, five staff members, five members of the community and two at-large appointees.SDSU said earlier in February they would name those on the task force, then later decided to keep their identities private. Some students question why a public university funded by taxpayers is hiding those responsible for a major decision.RELATED: SDSU Senate passes resolution to retire Aztec Warrior mascot “If we’re going to come to real solution, we need to know who is on that task force,” said SDSU Senior Brandon Jones, “it’s going go a long way in identifying the legitimacy of this task force.”SDSU defended their decision in a statement:"Until the conclusion of their work, names of this task force will be withheld in an effort to allow them the opportunity to deliberate, research and present their final recommendations without disruption." 1288

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Students, friends, and family are mourning the sudden death of a beloved East County teacher.John Berray, a longtime and well-known math teacher in Grossmont Union High School District, was seriously injured when he was leaving for work on Jan. 29.For an unknown reason, he got out of his car without it being placed in "park" and became pinned between his vehicle and his wife's vehicle, the county Medical Examiner said. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for an anoxic brain injury before he was pronounced dead on Feb. 12.According to a statement from Grossmont Union High School District, Berray worked at the district office as a digital learning coach. He most recently served as the district's math curriculum specialist where his passion for math led to innovations being used district wide.By all accounts, Berray was not only an exceptional educator but a husband, father, and friend. His career started in 1995 at West Hills High. He was selected by his students as the Golden Apple Award winner in 2000 and once again in 2008. His peers named him the West Hill High School teacher of the year in 2014. He went on to be named one of five 2014-15 San Diego County Teachers of the Year. After his passing, social media was filled with people living their thoughts and memories of Berray and his impact.Students, colleagues, and family will honor Berray with a memorial planned on March 14, Pi Day, at Journey Community Church in La Mesa. Those wishing to attend are asked to wear blue, Berray's favorite color. 1558

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Navy confirmed Thursday that the suspected Golden State Killer attended and graduated basic training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego.Officials say Joseph DeAngelo, 72, graduated from the training center after attending from October to December of 1964.DeAngelo also served aboard the Boston-class guided-missile cruiser USS Canberra (pictured below) during the Vietnam War.The Naval Training Center closed in 1997 and is now known as Liberty Station. The San Diego's District Attorney is also reexamining cold cases in San Diego that may have links to DeAngelo. TIMELINE: Major events in Golden State killer caseNew information Thursday also helps paint the picture of how authorities were able to catch the man accused of killing at least 12 people and raping at least 45 women.Prosecutors say authorities used genealogical sites to find a DNA match for DeAngelo, according to the Associated Press.Investigators compared the DNA collected from a crime scene of the Golden State killer to online genetic profiles and found a match: A relative of DeAngelo. Investigators didn't go into further detail such as which company they went through. DeAngelo is accused of committing the murders, rapes and more than 120 burglaries in the decade spanning between 1976 and 1986.RELATED: Suspect identified, arrested in East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer caseMost of the crimes happened near Sacramento and in the Bay Area. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County of San Diego is preparing to step up enforcement efforts on businesses flouting public health orders, taking the reins from local agencies like the San Diego Police Department that have virtually stopped issuing tickets to violators.Despite thousands of complaints about violations to the county's 211 hotline, data from the San Diego Police Department shows the agency has issued 168 citations for health order violations since the pandemic shutdowns began. Ninety-one percent of those citations came in April.Since then, citations decreased to 12 in May, 3 in June, and zero in July. Violating the public health order is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a ,000 fine or six months in jail.“As these health orders continue to change it makes it really difficult for law enforcement,” said SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.Since April, 211 received 9,382 complaints about public health order violations. During that span the county’s two largest law enforcement agencies, the Sheriff’s Department and SDPD, issued 312 citations combined.Lt. Takeuchi said you have to look back at the public health orders over time: in March, beaches and parks were closed and non-essential businesses were shut down. By April, it was easy to spot violators and expect they knew the rules.“It was a real black and white area,” he said. But then in late May, restrictions eased up, businesses started reopening, and Takeuchi said the regulations were less obvious. The mask ordinance, for example, only applies when an individual is within six feet of a non-household member. Determining whether groups of people walking the street are members of a household is highly impractical, he said.“When the county rules started to morph, we needed to understand them and we needed to make sure people understood them. So we always undertook an effort to educate first,” he said.Since then, the public health orders have been modified several times -- at least three times in July alone -- and Lt. Takeuchi said the department has had to embark on a new education campaign each time.“You've seen the San Diego Police Department really back off on enforcement because we think that the County Health Officer is really in a better position to ensure compliance of what they've deemed the egregious or the bad actors,” he said. This week, the county announced it would take on a more central role with enforcement, bringing on staff to more rapidly investigate cases like the one at The Gym in Pacific Beach, and opening a new compliance hotline. The new hotline and email system will replace the existing 211, so tipsters can speak directly with a county employee. 2664
