For 37 summers—three days a week, three times a day—Milton Kitchen has been pulling up to fire hydrants across Omaha and turning them into parties.“It wouldn’t be summer for me if I wasn’t out here getting wet with people, and just having a good time,” he says. The concept of the hydrant party is simple enough; he attaches a fire hose to a hydrant, and on the other end, a makeshift sprinkler made out of PVC pipe.Kitchen—how he prefers to be addressed—is a former school teacher, who now works for Omaha Parks and Recreation, which helps put on the parties and posts the season’s party calendar and locations. He says the hot weather ritual has become “his baby.”“I just like to stay busy,” Kitchen says. “And if staying busy is a part of making neighborhoods and kids and parents happy, then having fun, that’s what we do!”He sees it as a way for all generations to put the phones down and play together. Parents seem to like it for the same reasons.‘It’s like free, and it gets people out in an age where we don’t really play in our front yards anymore,” says parent Nikelle Robinson, who added that she enjoyed it just as much if not more than her son. “It’s kind of like a block party, ya know?” 1213
From your smartphone to your TV, computer or tablet, many of us pretty much stare at screens most of the day. This can put a strain on our eyes, which is why some people are turning to blue light filtering glasses. "I get people in here every day saying that their eyes get really sore, they burn or get really dry by the end of the day," said ophthalmologist Lauran Zimski. "When people sit at a computer, they blink about half the amount of times they would normally blink."You can find the blue light glasses at eyeglass counters, online and at big box stores. They can cost anywhere from up to 0. "So, blue is a particular wavelength of light that has been shown to basically keep you awake during the day," said Zimski. Zimski says there’s research that supports the theory that the glasses help people sleep."There's a lot of good research that shows if you wear blue blocking glasses before bedtime when you're looking at a digital device, you will fall asleep easier," said Zimski. But, if you're sitting in an office all day, Zimski says "there’s no real evidence that it helps with eye strain during the day staring at a computer."So, what does that mean for those addicted to their devices?"I certainly do have patients that feel like they do help with eye strain at the computer so you can certainly try them, but they may or may not make a difference," said Zimski. 1396
Footage captured by a doorbell camera in San Bernardino, California, shows the panic many in the state endured this week due to the threat of wildfires. The footage shows a neighbor pounding on a door, warning people inside about an approaching wildfire on Thursday morning."Henry, get up! Henry, the fire, the hill's on fire!" the neighbor yells.Later, the footage captures the wildfire creeping dangerously close to the house. Embers from the blaze fly into the frame and dance on the porch. The fire destroyed or damaged six homes and two outbuildings.San Bernardino County Fire Chief Don Trapp says about 500 homes have were evacuated since the fire started in the foothills before dawn Thursday, and winds drove it down into the city. The 200-acre blaze is one of two new wildfires burning in the inland region east of Los Angeles. In the nearby city of Jurupa Valley, an early morning blaze has grown to 150 acres. It has destroyed three homes and forced evacuations. 981
