?Ay, caramba! Ted Cruz. The senator from Texas ran afoul of the showrunner for "The Simpsons" after he invoked the characters during an appearance Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC."The Democrats are the party of Lisa Simpson," Cruz said of the character who is portrayed on the show as being a bit of a know-it-all. "And Republicans are happily the party of Homer, Bart, Maggie and Marge."Al Jean, showrunner for the long-running animated Fox series, struck back on Twitter saying Cruz needed the character of baby Maggie's pacifier."Ted Cruz says Maggie Simpson would vote for him," Jean tweeted. "I think Ted's the one who could use a pacifier in his mouth."Jean also joked that with the "way things are going even Mr. Burns (the show's billionaire character) is thinking of becoming a Democrat.""The Simpsons" is known for getting political and even had an episode in 2000 that predicted Donald Trump would become President (with Lisa Simpson being elected after him and inheriting his budget crisis).Cruz made his comments during an interview with "The Federalist" founder Ben Domenech, who compared the current gun control debate to a "Simpsons" episode.During a 1997 episode of the series titled "The Cartridge Family," patriarch Homer Simpson purchases a gun, much to the disapproval of his wife, Marge. When Homer argues he has to have a gun because "it's in the Constitution," daughter Lisa argues, "Dad, the Second Amendment is just a remnant from Revolutionary days. It has no meaning today."Cruz is a fan of the show and even has done impressions of the characters.Twitter had a field day over Cruz calling Lisa Simpson a Democrat, with one user tweeting, "Lisa is the only intelligent character in the family. So R the dumb characters Republican?""The Simpsons" former showrunner, Bill Oakley, has his own ideas about the characters' political affiliations. He tweeted that there was "no way" Maggie was a Republican and said that Bart is a Libertarian. As for Homer, Oakley wrote, "He may be Republican because the joke with Homer, as everyone knows, is that he is poorly-informed and reactionary in the extreme."  2170

“If you keep your hand here long enough it feels like he’s breathing,” Alan Trujillo said, explaining the lifelike, battery-powered pet he was holding. It’s a toy he brings in for older adults, as part of his job with Home Instead.“We provide senior care for seniors in their home,” he said. “A lot of times the only person our senior will see is their caregiver.” Trujillo works as the recruitment and engagement coordinator for Home Instead in Whittier, California.Right now with COVID-19 concerns, interactions for seniors are limited, and all the more important.“They’re very aware that they are in that high majority group of people who don't survive this, so it does lead to a little depression,” Trujillo said. Depression these lifelike animals help combat.“Well before the pandemic we’ve been focused on this epidemic of loneliness and isolation which is really impacting seniors at an astronomical rate,” Ted Fischer, co-founder and CEO of Ageless Innovation, said. Ageless Innovation is the parent company of the Joy for All line of companion pets.“We currently have cats, dogs and kittens,” he said. “It's not about the technology, it's about the magic. It's about what the technology enables.”A study by the University of California, San Francisco in 2012 found that 43 percent of the surveyed older adults felt lonely. And that was long before the pandemic.Social isolation has also been associated with about a 50 percent increased risk of dementia, among other serious medical conditions, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as cited by the CDC.It’s an issue that’s only been made worse by COVID-19.“All of these incredibly important protective measures that are put in place are further isolating older adults,” Fischer said. And these furry friends, designed with older adults in mind, bark, meow, and react to your attention just like real animals.“Pets in general have always helped seniors and most people get out of a funk. Coming home to that dog that’s just looking at you and wagging its tail, it’s hard to feel upset because that's unconditional love,” Catherine Baines-Sobczak, a licensed marriage family therapist with the HealthOne crisis assessment team, said.“Essentially it’s a perception of not feeling connected to other people, feeling unsupported or feeling that you’re misunderstood,” she said. She said beyond the online games, book clubs, and phone calls, animals provide something special.“With seniors it's difficult to find things to care for that give you that immediate reaction, so those pets...they do that,” she explained. “Having something to hold that’s tactile, that's soft, that may bring up memories of past pets they've had...that could help them feel less lonely.”Decreasing the sense of loneliness has other health benefits too.“Their memory is also impaired by loneliness, you don't have those outside triggers to remind you of things and to stay connected,” Baines-Sobczak said.As we find new ways to connect with our older loved ones without putting their health at risk, the demand for companion pets, which are sold online, continues to bloom.“I think like most skeptics, the second you see an older adult receive one of these, immediately name it and interact with it like they've had it forever, it’s magical. It really is,” Fischer said. 3346

A 16-year-old Indiana high school football player confessed to fatally stabbing a pregnant schoolmate after she waited too long to tell him about the pregnancy to get an abortion, according to court papers.Aaron Trejo, a member of the Mishawaka High School football team, was charged Monday with murder and feticide in the death of Breana Rouhselang on Saturday. The 17-year-old junior and cheerleader at the school east of South Bend was six months pregnant, her mother told police, according to an affidavit. An autopsy confirmed the pregnancy.Trejo told authorities he was aware of Breana's pregnancy and that he was alleged to be the father, the affidavit said, but he said neither wanted to have the baby. He said the two fought about the child before he stabbed Breana in the heart with a knife on Saturday, according to the affidavit. He then put a black plastic bag over her, put her body in a dumpster, and threw her phone and the knife in a river, court papers said."I took action ... I took her life," he said, when asked by authorities what he did when he learned she had waited too long to get an abortion by the time she told him of the pregnancy, according to the affidavit.Trejo told authorities "he had been planning and thinking about killing Breana and the baby for about a week and had not told anybody," according to the affidavit. An autopsy revealed that Breana died from multiple stab wounds and was choked with her scarf, the affidavit said.Trejo, who is being held without bond, is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. CNN was unable to reach the Trejo family on Monday. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit Assistant Commander Lt. Alex Arendt told reporters that the Rouhselang family had contacted the Mishawaka Police Department about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to report her missing after last seeing her at home around midnight."Upon their arrival and a search of the area they found evidence of a possible violent crime," Arendt said.Police later found her body in a dumpster behind a business, Arendt said. A black plastic bag had been placed over her head and upper torso, according to court papers.Trejo initially told police he contacted Breana for the first time in months to see how she was coping with the pregnancy. She had agreed to meet him, but he told police she wasn't at home when he went there, according to the affidavit. In his confession, he told authorities he decided to use a knife, which he brought from his home, "because he thought it would kill Breana quickly," according to court papers. 2593

(KGTV) - Many newlyweds rely on Target for wedding gifts to furnish their home — or in one couple's case, to play backdrop to the wedding memories that will furnish their Target-bought decor.Mike Delvalle and Isabella Sablan said Target always had a special place in their relationship and was "naturally our first inclination" as a place to display their love before saying "I do.""We dated for almost 8 years before we finally tied the knot and we have always been that rather unconventional couple which is why this photo-shoot is befitting. If you ask any of our friends, none of them would be surprised that we chose to do this at Target — that's how obsessed we are," Delvalle and Sablan said in a joint statement.RELATED: World's oldest message in a bottle found 132 years later in AustraliaThe couple is photographed perusing down aisles, picking up pizzas and home decor, sharing a slushie, and enjoying a day at their favorite retail store.Evan Rich, of Evan Rich Photography, said while the entire shoot shied away from typical wedding photos, he believes they were just as powerful."It is very trendy at the moment to take couples on grand outdoor adventures to photograph them in epic aspirational settings such as mountain tops with sweeping vistas," Rich said in an email. "But the truth is that there is a lot of love in our everyday life in much more mundane settings, yet settings that have much more of a personal connection to us because they are true to life."RELATED: Massachusetts police, firefighters save puppy choking on foodIf Delvalle and Sablan had it their way, their wedding photos wouldn't be the extent of their marital celebration..."It’s too bad we can’t throw our reception in Target because then that would truly be the frosting on the Market Pantry cake," the couple said. 1898
