Verizon just admitted that the value of its media brand, Oath, is essentially worthless.Verizon announced Tuesday that it would take a .6 billion writedown on its the media unit, which includes Yahoo and AOL.Oath's brand value is now worth just 0 million, according to Verizon. That's a stunning decrease in value since it formed in 2017. Verizon said Oath's brand was worth .8 billion when it last accounted for the company's goodwill valuation.Verizon snapped up a number of legacy media brands in recent years to create Oath. It bought Yahoo for .5 billion in 2017 and AOL, which owns HuffPost, for .4 billion in 2015.With virtually no goodwill brand value, Oath's overall value (assets and goodwill) is now worth half of what it was a few years ago.The telecommunications giant said the integration of Yahoo and AOL didn't meet expectations.Oath "has experienced increased competitive and market pressures throughout 2018 that have resulted in lower than expected revenues and earnings," according to a filing with the SEC Tuesday. Facebook, Google and Amazon are sucking up ad dollars, forcing publishers to search for other streams for revenue.The Verizon media unit's poor performance led the company to make "unfavorable adjustments to Oath's financial projections" for the next five years.Verizon plans to focus more on wireless technology and less on content and distribution.This summer, Verizon replaced CEO Lowell McAdam with Hans Vestberg, the telecom company's former chief technology officer.In September, Oath CEO Tim Armstrong left. TUCSON, Ariz. - An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper intentionally collided with a wrong-way vehicle on Oct. 14.According to DPS, a trooper was assisting a stranded driver on the I-10 near Avra Valley. The trooper heard reports of a wrong-way vehicle traveling east within the westbound traffic lanes on I-10.The trooper found the wrong-way vehicle, approaching the car head-on near Cortaro Road. The trooper intentionally aligned the front left corner of his patrol vehicle with the front left corner of the wrong-way vehicle - forcing a collision that immediately stopped the wrong-way driver.DPS said the wrong-way driver was a disoriented, elderly woman. She was not properly restrained during the collision and sustained non-life threatening injuries. She was taken to Banner University Medical Center.The trooper was treated for minor injuries.“The ability of our trooper to assess the situation and take decisive action to stop the wrong-way vehicle, protected the lives of many motorists while endangering his own," said DPS Director, Colonel Frank Milstead. Update, Tuesday morning: A social media post indicates Dan was welcomed back to his position.ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - Escondido neighbors outraged after their favorite city worker was fired Friday, rallied to get him his job back.Sunday night a small group gathered at Escondido City Hall to tell 10News why they believe it was wrong Dan Naylor was fired.Naylor is known in the community as their ambassador, fondly called "Dan the Man" for his work in public service. He picked up trash along Grand Avenue for years and was hired by the city to clean up Grape Park in 2017, he would have celebrated his first work anniversary in November.Naylor was also recognized by Mayor Sam Abed for his work.Naylor is not an average city worker. He was hit by a car when he was 7-years-old, while living in Oceanside. "I died for 10 minutes, three times... God told me to do the best that I can and be the best that I can," he said.Since then, he's had trouble speaking and limited mobility on his left side.Friday Dan said he was brought into his boss's office and told he was being fired for wearing his uniform while drinking a beer at Vinz after work a few weeks prior. Patti Thompson, a friend and self appointed advocate for Dan, started asking questions, "I got my questions answered by people within the City, so I checked my facts by people that are credible that work in the City office... United Airlines is looking to add flights to their schedule in October, including resuming previously canceled trips and adding new ones.According to the airline, this will bring them up to flying 40 percent of their full schedule in October compared to October 2019. In September, they are only expecting to fly 34 percent of their full schedule.The news comes a week after the airline announced it will furlough more than 16,000 employees in October. That’s when federal bailout money from the federal government expires.The resumed flights include eight routes to Hawaii, “pending approval of the state’s pre-arrival COVID testing program.” Hawaii recently extended their out-of-state visitors ban to October 1. Once they allow visitors and tourists again, travelers must fill out a “safe travels” form and go through pandemic screening measures."We continue to be data-driven and realistic in our approach to rebuilding our network," Ankit Gupta, United's vice president of Domestic Network Planning said in a press release. "Because October is typically a slower month for leisure travel, we're adjusting our schedules to reflect these seasonal changes in customer demand while resuming service or adding capacity on routes where we're seeing increased customer demand for travel."Some of those “data-driven” decisions may have led United to realign their schedule to match “current demand for leisure travel.” The airline says in October they will add more flights on days popular with leisure travelers looking for a long weekend getaway, and will schedule fewer flights on days where demand is lower.Other changes and additions in October include:Resuming or starting new service on nearly 50 routes in the US; mostly from United’s hubs in Chicago, Denver and Houston.Resuming additional service to Florida and along the west coast.Resuming service to 14 international destinations, including parts of South America and Mexico.United was one of the airlines last week who announced they will be permanently eliminating change fees on flights within the US.
