BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the boosting of efforts to prevent and control the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide as the illness re-emerges in parts of the country."Spring and summer is a peak period for infectious diseases. Currently, preventing and controlling various infectious diseases such as the hand-foot-mouth disease is a key task," Li said Wednesday at a meeting on a nationwide health campaign.At least five children died of HFMD and another 9,863 cases have been reported in central China's Henan Province as of March 23. The local government has asked kindergartens and schools across the province to step up health checks of children.Li urged the acceleration of research into vaccines and drugs for the disease and a focus on prevention and control work in rural areas for the most vulnerable groups.HFMD is a common illness mainly affecting children under the age of 10. It usually starts with a slight fever which is followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. It is spread through contact with saliva or feces of the infected.Li stressed related departments across the country should step up work to prevent and control A/H1N1 influenza with emergency plans and ample storage of vaccines, drugs and equipment.Li added that major events, including the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be the key events for disease control and prevention.

BEIJING, May 18 (Xinhua) -- China hopes that the deal Iran struck with Brazil and Turkey will help advance the process of resolving the Iran nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Tuesday.Yang made the comments in telepone conversations with his Turkish and Brazilian counterparts, Ahmet Davutoglu and Celso Amorim.Yang said that China has always sticked to the "dual-track" strategy in seeking a solution to the Iran nuclear issue and China appreciates the mediation efforts made by Turkey and Brazil.China attaches importance to and welcomes the agreement the two countries signed with Iran on supplying nuclear fuel for the research reactor in Tehran, he added.Davutoglu and Amorim briefed Yang on the efforts Turkey and Brazil have made concerning the Iran nuclear issue.They stressed that the deal the two countries reached with Iran is an important and positive step, which offers a new chance for the international community to peacefully solve the Iran nuclear issue through diplomatic means.Iran signed an accord with Turkey and Brazil in Tehran on Monday under which it will ship most of its low enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for the 20-percent uranium fuel needed for its Tehran reactor.

HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day. URUMQI, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China would spend 120 to 150 billion yuan (17.6 to 22 billion U.S. dollars) on transport infrastructure in its far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over the next five years, the regional government said Saturday.The money will be used to build new roads and renovate old ones to support Xinjiang's "leapfrog development" promised by the central government earlier this month, according to a statement issued after a conference of the Ministry of Transport and Xinjiang's regional government.The paved roads to be built or renovated will reach 75,000 to 80,000 kilometers in the region where there were just 15,000 kilometers of paved roads in place by the end of last year, said Song Airong, a regional Party official.Xinjiang's current 838 kilometers of highways will also be extended to 4,000 kilometers over the next five years, he said.The central government unveiled a policy package last Thursday to support the development of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, setting a goal that the region should undergo a spurt in development so that by 2015 its per capita gross domestic product could reach the national average.Under the package, fixed asset investment in Xinjiang in the next five years will be more than double the amount in the current five-year plan that ends this year.
