SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man Monday suspected of hitting a good Samaritan with his car at Ocean Beach in April before leaving the scene.According to police, Jaron Hillyer, 27, was arrested for felony hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license and no valid insurance.Police say Hillyer struck Julio Vazquez on the 2900 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard April 9 after Vazquez pulled over to help a couple stranded in their broken-down vehicle.RELATED: Good Samaritan recovering after hit and run accident in Ocean Beach Following the crash, Vazquez was hospitalized with a broken leg and bruised lung.After police released a description of Hillyer’s vehicle, police were able to identify and arrest the suspect.Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department at 619-531-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.RELATED: Man helping stranded couple on Ocean Beach road struck by vehicle 942
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Peeps are traditionally a sign of Spring: brightly colored marshmallow candy that’s front and center on store shelves.Long after Easter, Peeps, made by the Just Born company, appear to stay fresh as ever, seemingly indestructible in their pastel packages.In 2002, 10News put the durability of the everlasting marshmallows to the test. Reporter Herb Cawthorne, photographer Richard Klein and producer Revelle Anderson put Peeps on camera.The inspiration was simple, according to Klein. “We were sitting around talking about the purpose behind the Peep,” Klein said.That led to an elaborate shoot at San Diego locations. The candy was shot, run over, thrown off a five-story tower, and stomped with a crane."During the entire shoot I chewed on a Peep. It never got smaller. I wondered how we ate them as kids,” Cawthorne told 10News in 2018.The 2002 video shows only children eating the Peeps.Adults may want to take notice. Peeps are gluten-free and fat-free.Since their inception Peeps have crossed over into other holidays as well, now available in a variety of shapes for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and the summer season.Peeps were first created in 1953 by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes, according to Just Born. The process was eventually simplified and brought the production time of the treat from 27 hours down to 6 minutes.As far as the company is concerned, they hope their product retains its freshness year-round. Among their "frequently asked questions" on their website, Just Born says "storing unwrapped marshmallow in a warm, dry place generally results in prematurely stale product."The time it takes to destroy the sugary treat, however, remains up to consumers. 1791
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man they believe robbed the same San Diego gas station twice in six months.According to police, the first robbery happened at the Chevron on the 3500 block of National Avenue on June 2 at 4 a.m. with the second taking place November 3 at 3:52 a.m.During both robberies, the suspect stole cash and cigarettes, pointing a handgun at the clerk. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 35 to 40-years-old and between 5’6’” and 5’9” tall.During the June robbery the man was wearing blue jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly 1,500 people throughout San Diego County are without power as winter storms sweep through the area. According to the San Diego Gas and Electric outage map, 1,494 people are without power due to an unplanned outage. Affected communities stretch from the South Bay into North and East County. SDG&E says it expects to have all power restored by 11 p.m. At this time, it’s unclear what caused the outages. Click here to view the outage map. Cooler weather, rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue through Thursday before tapering off. “Tropical moisture is building around the county from a storm surging from Baja. A cold system will bring colder air and heavier rainfall and possible flash flooding,” said 10News Meteorologist Angelica Campos. Rainfall accumulations are expected to average between .50 and 1.50 inches for the coast and valleys, 2 to 3 inches for the mountains and .10 to .25 inches for the deserts.
