President Donald Trump again broke with his top public health experts Monday and said that he believed that a COVID-19 vaccine would be approved "by the end of October."Trump made the statement during an interview on "Fox & Friends" Monday morning.When asked which vaccine would be approved first, Trump noted that Pfizer's vaccine candidate was doing "very well," and also listed several other candidates, including those made by Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and AstraZeneca.Top health officials in the Trump administration have said that it likely won't be until the end of the year that a vaccine will be approved for Emergency Use Authorization. Earlier this month, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that vaccine authorization won't come until after election day because trials likely won't be filled until the end of September, and the leading candidates require two shots that need to be taken at least 28 days apart.Earlier this month, several large drugmakers signed a open letter that promised that the companies would not bow to political pressure to approve a vaccine before it was scientifically proven to be safe and effective.Last week, the federal government released a "playbook" for the roll-out of a COVID-19 vaccine, which noted that essential workers, health care professionals and "vulnerable groups" would receive the vaccine first. At the time his envoy said North Korea was "committed to denuclearization," but recent statements from the North have cast doubts on Kim's willingness to negotiate away his nuclear weapons.That in turn has led to skepticism the summit between Trump and Kim, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, will proceed. White House aides have grown pessimistic in recent days that the talks will occur, even as Trump has shown no signs he's ready to withdraw.Moon, who has urged a diplomatic path in the belief it could forestall war, hopes to bolster confidence that the Singapore meeting will be a success. President Donald Trump announced Friday night that he will be awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former Notre Dame football head coach Lou Holtz.Holtz is an ardent supporter of Trump, speaking on his behalf at the Republican National Convention last week.Holtz, who was once a notable figure at one of the nation’s most recognizable Catholic institutions, used part of his speech to vilify Democratic nominee Joe Biden for being a Catholic who supports abortion choice.“One of the important reasons he has my trust is because nobody is but a stronger advocate for the unborn than President Trump,” Holtz said. "The Biden-Harris ticket is the most radically pro-abortion campaign in history. They and other politicians are Catholics in name only and abandon innocent lives.
