(CNN) -- The US believes late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's son Hamza bin Laden is dead, a US official told CNN on Wednesday. The official said the US had a role in his death but did not provide details. The official added that the US government recently received evidence that it believes corroborates his death. The New York Times reported that Hamza bin Laden had been killed in an operation within the last two years.Earlier this year the US State Department called bin Laden, who is believed to be in his early 30s, an "emerging" leader in the terror group al Qaeda, offering a million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture. The New York Times, citing two US officials, said "the United States government had a role in the operation that killed the younger Mr. bin Laden, but it was not clear precisely what that role was."CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank said one thing is puzzling researchers who are closely tracking al Qaeda: "If Hamza bin Laden has indeed been dead for months, you would expect al Qaeda to have released some form of eulogy before today. The fact they haven't is highly unusual, given his status in the group."When the US government offered the reward it accused the Saudi Arabia-born Hamza bin Laden of seeking to encourage attacks against the US.While The New York Times said the operation that killed him took place prior to the State Department's reward offer, his death had yet to be confirmed by the US government.Hamza bin Laden "has released audio and video messages on the Internet, calling on his followers to launch attacks against the United States and its Western allies, and he has threatened attacks against the United States in revenge for the May 2011 killing of his father by US military forces," the State Department said in its announcement offering the reward.NBC News was first to report that the US government had assessed Hamza bin Laden to be dead.President Donald Trump declined to comment Wednesday when asked about the reports. The Department of Defense also declined to comment. The State Department said items seized from the elder bin Laden's hiding place in Pakistan during the Navy SEAL raid that resulted in his death indicated he was grooming Hamza bin Laden to replace him as al Qaeda's leader. He married the daughter of a senior al Qaeda leader who was charged by a federal grand jury for his role in the August 7, 1998, bombings of the US embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya.Saudi Arabia revoked Hamza bin Laden's citizenship, official newspaper Um al-Qura reported earlier this year, citing a royal order issued to the Interior Ministry. 2653

(KGTV) — As President Trump grapples with lawmakers to secure funding for his border wall project, supporters of the controversial border measure are hoping to deliver via their own wallets.A Gofundme titled "We The People Will Fund The Wall" has raised million by more than 16,000 people since it began Monday, reportedly by a Miramar, Fla., "fundraising team," the campaign says. However, the campaign itself is attributed to Brian Kolfage Jr., a Florida Air Force veteran who lost three limbs during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. The campaign's goal is set to billion, Gofundme's campaign limit.RELATED: In reversal, White House shifts border wall funding demands, wants to avoid shutdown“If the 63 million people who voted for Trump each pledge , we can build the wall. That equates to roughly [ billion], even if we get half, that's half the wall. We can do this," Kolfage writes on the campaign, adding that he's working with the website to increase its limit. The White House has been searching for ways to secure billion in funding for the president's border wall project, as President Trump threatens to shutdown the government if funding isn't provided. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the administration could support a spending measure giving .8 billion to the wall in order to avoid a government shutdown."We have other ways that we can get to that billion (for a border wall)," Sanders said Tuesday morning during an interview with Fox News. Sanders added: "At the end of the day, we don't want to shut down the government, we want to shut down the border."Congressional lawmakers must pass a spending measure by midnight Friday or some federal agencies will be forced to shut down. 1740

(KGTV) — An asteroid discovered by Palomar Observatory is set to make a pass by Earth the day before the 2020 U.S. election. The asteroid, dubbed "2018 VP1," was first noticed by the San Diego County observatory on Nov. 3, 2018, according to data from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It's estimated to measure about 5.9 and 12.8 feet in diameter.NASA is currently forecasting that the space rock will come between 4,800 to 260,000 miles of our atmosphere on Nov. 2. For comparison, the International Space Station is about 254 miles above the planet. The probability of 2018 VP1 impacting our planet is 1 in 240 or about 0.41%.NASA keeps a running list of potential asteroid threats to the planet. Currently, there are no immediate threats listed on the agency's website. The largest known risk is a 4,200-foot wide asteroid with a 0.012% chance of hitting Earth in 860 years. 884

(CNS) -- Citing what he called an unprecedented spike in new COVID-19 cases, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the state is hitting an "emergency brake" on economic activity, moving 28 counties -- including Orange -- back to the most restrictive tier of California's matrix governing business operations. The move means 41 of the state's 58 counties are now in the restrictive purple tier, which severely restricts capacity at retail establishments, closes fitness centers and limits restaurants to limited outdoor-only service. The 41 counties represent 94.1% of the state's population. Before Monday, only 13 counties were in the purple tier. The re-classifications will officially take effect Tuesday, according to the governor's office.Newsom said daily cases numbers in the state "have doubled just in the last 10 days. This is simply the fastest increase California has seen since the beginning of this pandemic."Newsom noted that the biggest increase the state had seen previously was in mid-June, when California had a 39.2% increase in new cases in one week. At the start of November, the state saw a 51.3% increase in a one-week period, he said.He called it an "increase simply without precedent in California's pandemic history."Newsom also announced changes in the way counties will be classified in the state's four-tier reopening matrix. Previously, counties could only move backward in the roadmap if they failed to meet key metrics -- the rates of new cases and positive tests -- for two consecutive weeks. Now a county will be moved backward after just one week of elevated numbers.Counties can also potentially be moved back multiple tiers in the matrix if the numbers warrant, Newsom said. Under the new guidelines, counties that are moved backward in the tier system must require businesses to meet the accompanying operating restrictions immediately, as opposed to a previous three- day grace period."We want to see the application and implementation of this new tiered status occur in a 24-hour period," he said. The state previously updated counties' placement in the matrix once a week -- every Tuesday -- but now counties can be moved at any time based on the numbers, the governor said.Newsom said the spike in cases raises concerns about a possible overwhelming of the hospitals. To help prevent such an impact, he said the state has 11 "surge facilities" that can be activated to prevent hospitals from being overrun in particularly hard-hit areas. Those facilities have a total capacity of 1,872 beds.He said the first such facility will be activated in Imperial County. The governor said more announcements could be made later in the week about additional restrictions, including a business curfew -- an idea Los Angeles County is expected to consider this week. The idea would be to restrict operating hours at businesses or restaurants in hopes of limiting public intermingling.“We also are considering, full disclosure and a bit of a preview, the notion of a curfew. Before you jump in terms of your mindset of whether that’s a good idea or a bad idea, we are assessing that as well," the governor said.Newsom added he was looking at studies on curfew strategies and effectiveness in France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, and he also cited Massachusetts and Virginia as examples of U.S. states with curfews."All of that is being assessed," he said. "We want to socialize that. We have a lot of questions about what that looks like, what that doesn't look like, who does it impact, who doesn't it impact, what does a real curfew mean in terms of certain kinds of industry and business activities. That's what we're referring to in this space."In making the announcement about heightened restrictions, Newsom for the first time publicly acknowledged and apologized for attending a recent birthday party at a Napa restaurant for a longtime adviser, an event that earned him rebuke from critics saying he was failing to adhere to his own restrictions against gatherings."As soon as I sat down at the larger table, I realized it was a little larger group that I anticipated," Newsom said. "And I made a bad mistake. Instead of sitting down, I should have stood up and walked back, gotten in my car and drove back to my house. Instead I chose to sit there with my wife and a number of other couples that were outside the household."... The spirit of what I'm preaching all the time was contradicted, and I've got to own that. So I want to apologize to you, because I need to preach and practice, not just preach and not practice. And I've done my best to do that. We're all human. We all fall short sometimes."... I shouldn't have been there. I should have turned back around. So when that happens, you pay the price but you also own the mistake and you don't ever make it again. And you have my word on that." 4834
