SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Customs and Border Protection officers say more than 300 pounds of drugs were seized from a truck at the Otay Mesa cargo port of entry this week.CBP officers say a tractor-trailer truck was stopped on Thursday at about 7 a.m. The driver was carrying a shipment of recycled cardboard, CBP said. The truck was referred to an imaging scan and exam, where an anomaly was detected in the truck's cab.CBP says officers removed 64 packages from two duffel bags hidden inside a sleeper compartment: 59 containing 286 pounds of methamphetamine and five bags containing 26 pounds of fentanyl. The narcotics, and tractor-trailer were seized and the driver, a 36-year-old Mexican citizen with a valid B1/B2 border-crossing card, was turned over to ICE and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center to face federal charges."Even in the midst of a global pandemic, we continue to see attempts to move hard narcotics across the border and into U.S. communities," said Pete Flores, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego. "CBP officers at all of our nation’s legal border crossings remain on the job and vigilant during these unprecedented times." 1174

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers played the part of Santa Claus for one little girl who made a very big difference this summer. The lights were flashing and Christmas music was blasting through the loudspeaker as officers drove downtown toward 4-year-old Leilani's home.Leilani and her dad Lydell Short met them on the sidewalk. One officer walked up, crouched, and asked Leilani in a soft voice if she remembers them. She nodded. She and her dad met the officers last summer during a Black Lives Matter protest. Short said they heard a commotion outside and saw the line of officers near a crowd of protestors."She's always telling me she wanted to be a police officer or whatnot, so I asked them if it would be okay if she took a picture with them," he said. She high-fived and smiled with officers.A moment of kindness that left an indelible mark and brought so many people together during a tense time.Back at Leilani's home, Christmas gifts from the officers started flowing, including a barbie car, dinosaurs, a doctor doll, and most coveted, a brand new bicycle and scooter."We got a lot of stuff!!" Leilani cheered, kicking her foot into the air and smiling wide under her mask. After seeing our latest story on ABC 10News on the family, the officers got in touch with Leilani's family to coordinate the surprise."She got everything she asked for so we were very appreciative. It made our Christmas for sure," Short said. Before leaving, officers ensured she was fitted with a helmet and told her they wanted her to have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and that she could call them anytime she needs them. The exchange showing some gifts don't come in a box, but from the heart. 1714

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Back to school routines aren’t just for kids; parents must also get in the habit of alarms, rides, and packing lunches. While children may be content with processed and sugary snacks, it’s up to moms and dads to keep lunches healthy.Empty calories are a concern, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Added sugars and solid fats contribute to 40 percent of the daily calories for children. About half of the empty calories come from soda, fruit drinks, dairy or grain desserts, pizza, and whole milk.Dr. Nimali Fernando is a Virginia-based pediatrician who founded The Doctor Yum Project and co-wrote the book “Raising a Healthy, Happy Eater: A Parent’s Handbook”.“School lunches may not seem significant in a child’s life, but when you add up that they are eating them five days per week it’s quite a lot of their calorie consumption,” said Dr. Fernando. “Teaching them healthy lunch habits from a young age will give them the tools to build lifelong healthy habits.”Dr. Yum recommends steps for preparing healthy school lunches.Meal planning: Get a head start on the week’s meals by planning during the weekend. You can save time on your shopping list if you’re well prepared.Buy in bulk: Instead of expensive individually-packed snacks, opt for bulk purchases of items like dried fruit and trail mix.Pack leftovers: If you cook extra food at dinner, you can put some aside for your child’s lunch the next day.Cook or bake: Why buy muffins when you can bake a batch and save money? You also have more control over the ingredients. Additional items can be put in the freezer.Skip the sugar: Sweet drinks are expensive and add extra sugar to your child’s meals. The CDC says sugary beverages account for 10 percent of the calories in children’s diets. You can always send them to school with a reusable container for water.Change it up: Break free of the PB&J mold with an addition like bananas or whole wheat tortillas. Send a smoothie: You can get extra nutrition with frozen fruits and vegetables in smoothies. Keep frozen food on hand to blend. The smoothies can go back into the freezer until they’re ready to eat. 2162
