SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties opened a shelter Thursday night for residents displaced by flooding from heavy rainstorms.The shelter opened around 9:30 p.m. at the Paradise Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church on East 8th Street in National City.Services include a safe and clean place to stay, food, hydration, comfort kits with personal hygiene items, emotional support and health services, according to the Red Cross. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man accused of fatally stabbing a motorist seven times in the South Bay during a road rage dispute was convicted of second-degree murder Friday.Jurors found Rickey Vernon Smith, 60, guilty after only one day of deliberations in the Nov. 27, 2018, slaying of 36-year-old Horace Williams Jr.Smith is set to be sentenced on Dec. 11.RELATED: Local man brings families light in times of needThe road rage confrontation between Smith and Williams came to a head near Chula Vista Golf Course, after the two argued along several roadways last November. Williams reportedly threw a soda cup at Smith's vehicle before Smith struck Williams' minivan.Prosecutors say Smith then got out of his truck after cutting Williams off, walked over to his driver's side window, punched Williams in the face and walked away, until walking back and stabbing Williams several times with a knife.Witnesses said Williams got out of his van and collapsed in the roadway, bleeding heavily. During a 911 call after the stabbing, Smith told a dispatcher Williams had cut him off and threw a drink at his truck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The EPA has announced several short-term projects to stop cross-border sewage spills in the Tijuana River Valley.For years, the area has been dealing with sewage spills and contaminated waters in the area, forcing the closure of local beaches.Some of the projects announced Wednesday include replacing nearly a mile of old leaking pike, improvement to the pumping systems to divert sewage flow away from the Tijuana River Valley, and replacing collectors that had repeatedly collapsed in the past.One of the grants will divert 10-million gallons of wastewater flow a day.Mayors from costal cities like Imperial Beach and Coronado and Border Patrol officials joined the EPA during their announcement, sharing how the contaminated waters have impacted their communities.As a result of these short-term fixes, Imperial Beach mayor Serge Dedina says the beaches are now open.EPA official say the money for these projects come from 2020 funding. A pair of scientists is planting a seaweed farm in the bay, to test the plant's marketability for use as food, animal feed, fertilizer, and bio-fuel."Kelp is the new kale," says Torre Polizzi, one of the owners of Sunken Seaweed.Polizzi and his partner Leslie Booher just got a 7,000 grant from the Port of San Diego to start a test-farm in the bay.
