CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - A massive training exercise coordinated between three Marine Corps. Air Stations in the Southwest took flight Monday.The goal is to ensure Marines and Sailors are ready if they need to move hundreds of troops and supplies fast. The exercise is comprised of about 1,300 troops, from MCAS Miramar, Camp Pendleton and Yuma. It took three months of planning."It really stretches all the muscles for all of the units to support something big like this," Lt. Col. Nathan Storm said.The training is almost twice as big as prior similar trainings."It gives I Marine Expeditionary Force the opportunity to get together and practice large scale operations like this for operations wherever the Marine Corps may send us in order to defend the United States," Lt. Col. Storm said.This particular mission is to take over an airbase and secure it as a supply route, "not that we’re necessarily planning for anything like that but we always have to be ready and be lethal for that eventuality," he said.Dozens of aircraft were meticulously coordinated to come in and take off in waves. Rows of MV-22 Osprey sat on the flight deck loading up Monday afternoon. Earlier two of the Marines' biggest assault support helicopters, the CH 53E Super Stallions, loaded up with dozens of troops and took off.The flights Monday were the crux of the past two weeks of training for the Marines and Sailors. "Fantastic! It is absolutely great to see these all of these different communities come together the way that they are supposed to, the way that they’re designed in the Marine Corps to support the war fighters of the 1st Marine Division," Lt. Col. Storm said.The aircraft will all meet in Twentynine Palms, near Joshua Tree, where they will train in a mock town, in scenarios similar to what they would see overseas. They will be extracted and brought back home Wednesday.Neighbors should not notice any difference in the amount of noise during the exercise. Lt. Col. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Spy, prisoner of war, patriot – at one time or another, all those words described Dr. Mary Walker, a practicing surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War.“She was a woman ahead of her time,” said Keith Hardison, director of the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.Now, though, Dr. Walker’s time has come. She is the focus of a new special exhibit at the center.“Dr. Walker wanted to go where the fighting was bloodiest,” said exhibit curator Molly Randolph. “She tried multiple times to join up and was denied.”Yet, she persisted and volunteered her medical skills to Union commanders during the Civil War. They put her to work – for no pay – on the front lines.That’s when her career as a spy began.“She used that cover of going into the countryside and providing medical care to do some espionage,” Randolph said.Eventually, the Confederate Army captured her and held her as a prisoner of war for four months, where she became well-known for wearing her trademark pants.“She was rather notorious,” Randolph said. “She was written up in the Confederate papers. Everyone thought this, you know, doctor - a female doctor who wore pants! - was a thing to poke fun at a little bit.”Suffering severe malnourishment at the Confederacy’s notorious “Castle Thunder” prison, Dr. Walker was eventually released in a prisoner exchange.“She was actually exchanged for a Confederate doctor, which she loved. She loved that she was worth so much to the federal forces,” Randolph said.Dr. Walker returned to the front lines to provide medical care for the Union Army. When the war ended, President Andrew Johnson awarded her the Medal of Honor.She became the first woman to ever receive it and – so far – remains the only one.“I’m surprised there’s only been one,” said Tom Jones, who was visiting the Medal of Honor Heritage Center from Illinois. “I know there’s not been a lot of women in combat, but they’ve been serving since the Civil War, obviously.”In 1917, the military instituted new rules for awarding the Medal of Honor and stripped Dr. Walker of hers because, technically, she had not been formally enlisted – though she had repeatedly tried to sign up.She died two years later, in 1919.“She refused to return it and continued to wear it,” Randolph said. “So, it was obviously something that was incredibly important to her.”Six decades later, a military board and President Jimmy Carter would once again reinstate her medal.“She was willing to challenge things that were unfair or that were convention, but were holding people back,” Hardison said.Dr. Walker was a lifelong suffragist. He’s advising clients of his car-buying concierge service to at least consider leasing because of the current economic conditions.You can put little or no money down. You can select a shorter term than a car loan. And the risk of massive depreciation down the road is borne by the bank, not you.A lot of buyers are coming to the same conclusion: The percentage of buyers who use automakers’ finance arm and choose to lease has risen from 31% to 52% year over year, according to industry analyst J.D. Power.5 reasons leasing works nowNot everyone is a candidate for leasing. But here are five factors that could tip the decision toward leasing rather than buying your next vehicle.1. Leasing offers a shorter commitment. “No one knows what will happen over the next few years,” Weintraub says. “People are worried about job security and their finances so the commitment of a car purchase isn’t as appealing.” Instead, consumers are leaning toward leasing because there are affordable two- and three-year leasing agreements available. Weintraub says there are currently many of these low-cost leasing incentives available. That could change as sales rebound, though. To find deals, Hall recommends going to the manufacturer’s website and searching for special offers. The terms of the lease are spelled out by listing the three major elements of the contract:Monthly payment.Length of the lease in months.Amount due at signing, which is similar to a down payment.Lenders can adjust these factors and apply the cash incentives in a number of ways to arrive at a low lease payment, Hall says.5. Leasing protects against sudden depreciation. Leasing is based, in part, on the predicted value of the car at the end of the contract. But in today’s world, Weintraub says that no one truly knows what the car will be worth in three years. So if the value of the car unexpectedly drops, it’s the lender’s problem, not yours. If, however, the car’s value is unexpectedly high at the end of the lease, you have the option to buy the car yourself and can possibly make money by selling it.The basics on leasingTrying to get the best deal on a lease is different from negotiating to buy a car. Here are a few tactics that the experts recommend.Check pricing guides. Because of limited inventory caused by factory shutdowns, the price of some cars has risen, Weintraub says. Begin by checking car prices on sites such as Edmunds, TrueCar and Kelley Blue Book. But keep in mind that these are not real-world prices.Shop multiple dealerships. Get apples-to-apples lease quotes from at least three dealerships to find your best deal. Tell the dealer the amount you want to pay in drive-off fees, the length of the loan — three years is the “gold standard,” according to Hall — and the number of miles you want to drive. Based on this, the dealer will give you a monthly payment. Every part of the deal is negotiable.Cast a wide net. Car factories were closed during the shutdown, so choices may be limited for a few months. Some manufacturers’ websites allow you to search multiple dealerships to find the right model in your preferred color.Keep an eye on the miles. Understand how many miles of driving are included with the lease agreement. In most leases, 12,000 miles a year is standard. But recently, some leases include only 10,000 miles or fewer, but offer a lower monthly payment.
