SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Father Joe’s Village and Connections Housing has been activated as rain is set to move in and cold temperatures continue throughout San Diego.The shelter, located at 1501 Imperial Avenue downtown, opens when the temperature is 50 degrees or below and there is a 40 percent chance of rain or exceptional weather conditions.The program, funded by the City of San Diego, provides food and shelter.CLICK HERE FOR TODAYS FORECASTThis is the second time so far this year that the shelter has opened. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the second time in just over one year, the drinking water at a University Heights-area school has tested positive for lead, the San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday.The lead was found during routine testing of Birney Elementary School’s drinking fountains, according to the Facilities Communications Manager.The fountains were shut off and parents were notified, the district said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Humpback whales aren't the only aquatic life giving locals a show off the coast of San Diego.Dolphins can be seen fairly regularly, but it's not everyday you see a pod tallying in the thousands. The term "mega" gets thrown around quite a bit to describe scale, but in this case, it truly fits.Video captured Sunday shows a "megapod" of thousands of "common dolphins" off San Diego's coast, estimated to be of about 2,500 dolphins.RELATED: Humpback whale feeding frenzy off San Diego's coastDomenic Biagini, a photographer for San Diego Whale Watch, said pods of 25 to 200 dolphins are common. But a megapod, or "superpod," refers to pods eclipsing 1,000 dolphins and may be seen once every other month."Every now and then, we'll see multiple pods come together," Biagini said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - High school football is back but, officials say the sport’s popularity is on a relatively downward track.The National Federation of State High School Associations will release it’s sport participation figures in August and football’s figures are expected to be slightly less than they were the year before.“There’s no doubt numbers have declined in football in San Diego,” said California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Commissioner Jerry Schniepp. “last year when we looked at overall participation I think we were down about 2% and it may be a little more than that now.”Jerry Schniepp is San Diego’s prep sports chief and he says parents are concerned about their kids' safety."Parents have to make a tough call now whether or not to let their son or daughter play football,” said Schniepp, “you can’t take the risk out of a sport like football it’s always going to be there."The CIF says 5 schools in the last 3 years have had to fold their non-varsity teams due to dwindling participation.Schniepp says the concern over concussions and CTE are certainly founded, but the gear in the sport has never been safer.“It’s the sport that sets the tone for a school year for most schools it helps build a positive culture, it helps fund a lot of those programs so I don’t think football is going away” said Schniepp, “but I think it’s changed.” 1389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California could reach .30 per gallon in the next several weeks, according to a GasBuddy. The company’s senior petroleum analyst, Patrick DeHaan, took to Twitter to announce that prices could soar to .15 to .30 per gallon in the next 10 to 14 days. According to DeHaan, the average price per gallon reached .85 in Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon and is expected to “breach in the next few days.”DeHaan tweeted out earlier Wednesday that prices in Southern California could spike by anywhere between 25 and 40 cents per gallon in the coming days. The news comes amid problems at several California refineries and just weeks after attacks on oil fields in Saudi Arabia. Several of the refinery issues include unplanned work at PBF refinery in Torrance, an outage at Chevron’s Segundo refinery, a flaring event at Valero Benicia and Marathon’s LA refinery, DeHaan says.
