SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Vice President Mike Pence says 21 people aboard a mammoth cruise ship off the California coast have tested positive for the new coronavirus, including 19 crew members. Pence said Friday that the federal government is working with California officials on a plan to bring the 951-foot Grand Princess to a non-commercial port this weekend. The 3,500 passengers and crew members will be tested for the virus. Friday's test results come amid evidence the vessel was the breeding ground for a deadly cluster of at least 10 cases during its previous voyage. The ship off California was returning to San Francisco after visiting Hawaii. Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that the ship won’t come to shore until the passengers are appropriately assessed. The ship is owned by Princess Cruises, which also owns the Diamond Princess, the ship that was quarantined for two weeks in Yokohama, Japan, last month because of the virus. In the end, about 700 of the 3,700 people aboard became infected. Meanwhile, the death toll from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, has risen to 14, with all but one victim in Washington state. The other was in California.Pennsylvania, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kentucky and Oklahoma all reported their first cases Friday. Also on Friday, President Donald Trump signed a .3 billion funding bill to help public health agencies address the crisis. The bill was widely supported by lawmakers on both side of the aisle.Worldwide, the virus has infected more than 100,000 people and killed over 3,400, with the vast majority of them in China. Most cases have been mild, and more than half of those infected have recovered. 1695

Senators are done with many of the quaint rules that are making them miserable during President Donald Trump's impeachment trial. Many are pacing the chamber, walking out during arguments, napping and openly scoffing. Bans on that behavior are designed to keep their attention on the grave and rare business of deciding whether to remove a president from office. But they're getting little sleep, and they've heard the story of Trump's pressure on Ukraine before. The ban on cell phones on the Senate floor is one rule they haven't apparently flouted, though they often appear to be leaving the floor for a moment with their devices.Democrats appeal for GOP help to convict 'corrupt' TrumpHouse Democrats have wrapped up a day of arguments in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, appealing to skeptical Republican senators to join them in voting to oust Trump from office to “protect our democracy.” Trump's lawyers are sitting by, waiting their turn. The president is blasting the proceedings, threatening jokingly to face off with the Democrats by coming to “sit right in the front row and stare at their corrupt faces.” The challenge before the House managers is clear: Democrats have 24 hours over three days to prosecute the charges against Trump, trying to win over not just fidgety senators but the American public.Crime required for impeachment? Not so, say legal expertsThe defense in President Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial may sound very similar to the defense in the first impeachment case in American history. Back in 1868, a lawyer for President Andrew Johnson argued that Johnson couldn't be removed from office because Johnson hadn't committed a crime. Today, one of Trump's lawyers, Alan Dershowitz, is planning to argue at Trump's trial that impeachment requires “criminal-like conduct." But legal scholars dispute the idea that the Founding Fathers ever intended for impeachable offenses to require proof of a crime. Historians also are skeptical about crediting this argument with securing Johnson's narrow acquittal. 2066

Some families pass down jewelry, watches or even recipes. But a Michigan family has its own heirloom: a 141-year-old fruitcake. “It’s a great thing,” said Julie Ruttinger, the great great granddaughter of Fidelia Ford, who baked the cake in 1878. “It was tradition. It’s a legacy.”The cake was initially preserved to honor Ford. She established a tradition of baking the cake and letting it age for a year before serving it during holiday seasons. Ford died at age 65 before her 1878 cake could be eaten, and by the time the holidays arrived, the family considered her handiwork a legacy, not food. Until his 2013 death, the cake was in the care of Ruttinger’s father, Morgan Ford, who was Fidelia Ford’s great-grandson. He had stored it in an antique glass dish on the top shelf of a china cabinet in his Tecumseh home — which is where it remains today.“He took care of it to the day he left the earth,” Ruttinger said. “We knew it meant a lot to him.”Guinness World Records doesn’t have an entry for the oldest fruitcake, but as for cakes in general, the Ford fruitcake is nowhere near the world’s oldest, 1120

Prosecutors have confirmed that there's an "ongoing criminal investigation" that relates to Julian Assange's case, according to an assertion they made in court on Wednesday. The Justice Department wrote to a judge in the Eastern District of Virginia that it needed to keep a document in the case from more than a year ago still secret because of the ongoing activity. The extent of the continuing investigative work around WikiLeaks and Assange is still unknown -- though it confirms CNN and other news outlets' reporting in recent days that WikiLeaks is connected to at least one probe that could result in more criminal charges. 640
