It's the kind of situation nobody wants to be in: getting sick unexpectedly and left with a hefty hospital bill to pay. But it's a situation Jamesia Shutt is all too familiar with. Three years ago, Shutt got sick and went to the emergency room in the middle of the night. "They did some X-rays, some morphine, gave me an antibiotic and sent me home in like two hours maybe,” Shutt recalls of the visit. “You have pneumonia, go home." That two-hour visit to the ER turned out be quite expensive. "A couple weeks later, I don't know when, I get a bill for ,000," she says. It’s a sticker shock she didn't see coming. "My thought is well, I'm not a doctor or a medical person, so I’m trusting this cost, whatever they say it's going to cost," she says. It’s a problem that David Silverstein, the founder of the non-profit group Broken Healthcare, sees it all the time. "Imagine if you and I went to a restaurant and we sat down at the same table at the same time with the same waiter and we're given the same menu with different prices on it, how would that make you feel? Well, this happens in healthcare every day," Silverstein says. Silverstein has been fighting to make sure patients aren't hit with what are called “surprise bills.” "The number one thing is ask a lot of questions and don't get frustrated by the answers,” he says. “As a consumer, you have rights. If they say they don't know, say that's not good enough." Silverstein says ask questions to find out if anyone doing the procedure is out of your insurance network. This year, the White House started requiring hospitals to list prices online. The issue with that is those prices are listed without factoring in insurance, which complicates things even more. "It does not help 99 percent of the population, but it's a step in the right direction,” Silverstein says. “We need transparency from both the providers and the insurance carriers.” When the president held this meeting last month, both Silverstein and Shutt were by his side, because they know the problem firsthand. "To have the president ask what happened and why do you have this medical bill was pretty incredible," Shutt says. Three years later, Broken Healthcare's attorneys are fighting Shutt’s hospital bill. "It is a game and Americans need to learn the rules of the game, and they need to learn their rights and play the game to win until such time our government officials do the right thing and change the rules, so we don't have to play this sleazy game anymore," Silverstein says. 2540

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — While doctors, first responders and local health departments are asking people to not gather in large groups for the Thanksgiving holiday, there are still many families who say they're planning to get together regardless. After major holidays, doctors have typically seen spikes in COVID-19 numbers.Doctors are sharing what to do if you learn someone in your group has symptoms of COVID-19 or tests positive for the virus.First, assess if you yourself have symptoms of COVID-19. These include cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fever, chills, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, vomiting, and severe headaches and body aches. If you do, medical workers say go get a test right away. But if you don't have symptoms, but believe you may have been exposed, doctors say you and your immediate family will need to self-quarantine. Then, wait about five days to get tested."The reason for doing that is that you will probably get a false negative test if you do the test, and the first one or two or three, four days, since the exposure because there's not enough viral load in your nose," said Dr. Lara Cavanaugh with Children's Medical Center in Palm Harbor.?Something else important to keep in mind is just because you get a negative test result after five days does not mean you are necessarily in the clear.Doctors say you can still become positive for the virus and they say you should continue to quarantine for a full 14 days after exposure. AURORA, Colo. -- For a two-and-a-half-month-old baby, Huntleigh has gone through a lot. She was born with her organs outside her body due to a rare birth defect called Omphalocele. "Omphalocele is a developmental anomaly that is a failure of the normal enfolding of the baby during development,” said Dr. Ken Liechty, a pediatric and fetal surgeon at Children's Hospital Colorado. Basically, omphalocele means organs like the stomach, bowel, and intestines are outside the baby’s abdominal wall, but still inside a sack. Surgeons are challenged with assessing each individual case and getting those organs back into the baby’s body. Thankfully, for Huntleigh, that surgical correction was possible almost immediately after birth. "Her organs and intestine were slowly reduced back into her abdomen – similar to rolling up a tube of toothpaste where you’re slowly pushing things back down into the abdomen and then closing the muscles over it,” Dr. Liechty said. Every case is different, and some are more severe. But overall, the birth defect is quite rare. According to 1084

EVANSTON, Ill. – If you drive too fast, you could miss it. But a chance turn into one alley just north of Chicago will transport you into a drive-thru art gallery. “I wanted to take this place this alley which is just ugly or lackluster and make it into something special,” explained Teresa Parod. The Evanston, Illinois-based painter and artist is the person behind several vibrant garage door murals. From floral motifs to interplanetary themes, her goal she says is to uplift people through her painting. “I want all my public art to be positive because no one who walks down this alley… most didn't ask me to paint this,” she said. “So, I don't want them to come and see some something that is very negative or makes them feel unhappy.” The canvases range from one-and-a-half to two car garage doors. She only charges for material. The medium: house paint. “What I really like is when people come who are not in the neighborhood and they're just riding their bikes or walking dog and they're like well what is this? And it's something special,” said Parod. The artist started with her own door, concerned with how her neighbors might respond. “This is my own garage. And I thought it would be fun to put the front of my house on my garage,” she said. But many have embraced transforming the back alley into a gallery of vibrant, public works of art. Neighbor Judy Slagle saw the work and just had to have her garage door painted as well. Hers is a collection of brightly colored sunflowers. “When I came home especially in the winter like it is now, I wanted to come home and have something that would make me smile and other people I hope too,” said Slagle For an enhanced experience, Parod’s husband Bill, a sound artist and software developer, is creating an augmented reality app. Virtual birds can be seen on the screen interacting with the paintings. He is designing customized vignettes for each door. “So that we could walk to them and you could hear something in 3D and walk around and the birds and so on could fly around,” he explained. The doors are now in high demand. “Everybody started asking me to do them and I have a waiting list,” said Parod. “So, I hope to do the whole alley and I hope to do more alleys.” And while Parod may see the world as her canvas, this time it’s right up her alley. 2346

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Around the world there are more than 100 safe injection sites, in countries like Canada, Australia and Spain. However, in the U.S. there are none. “In 2017, 1,217 Philadelphians died of overdoses. Last year about 1,150,” said Philadelphia’s former mayor, and the state’s former governor, Ed Rendell. Rendell has been leading a fighting for Philadelphia to open the first safe injection site in the country. He joined the organization Safehouse in this effort shortly after his best friend’s son overdosed on heroin. “When John Decker died, it became personal,” added Rendell. “Decker wasn’t my son, but I knew him since he was a 2-year-old boy.”Safe injection sites provide a place for users to inject drugs under medical supervision. The proposal has landed Rendell and supporters of the plan against the federal government. The Department of Justice sued Safehouse last year to block the site but then earlier this month this call happened. “It’s kind of a nuance. He just said it’s not unlawful activity,” said a board member of Safehouse who was on speaker phone in Rendell’s office. The call described a judge’s decision minutes earlier. The federal judge denied the Trump administration’s motion to block Safehouse from opening a safe injection site under the federal Crack House Statue. “It is clearly a victory,” said Rendell during the call. A victory against the D.O.J for now, but Rendell and Safehouse still have to win over the public. There’s a lot the criticism around the idea of a safe injection sites, some argue one in the U.S. would be promoting the use of opioid drugs rather than curbing it. “Ridiculous! No one is going to get hooked on opioids because they think of themselves well if I get her back and always inject in front of a medical personnel,” Rendell responds. However, many in the community of Kensington, where the safe injection site would be located, add additional concerns. Some neighbors fear a site would bring addicts from all over the city to a neighborhood already struggling and possibly take that neighborhood to a new low. “If you have time I’d say go out to Kensington and look at what’s there right now couldn’t get any worse,” argues Rendell. “My message to the neighbors is that we are going to bring it all indoors no one is going to be shooting up in front of your kid
