SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego dentist is giving parents a new tool to win the battle over brushing.Dr. Kami Hoss recently released a singing toothbrush that pairs with augmented reality technology."We gotta come up with brushes that are really fun and educate in a fun way," says Dr. Hoss.The brush plays a song for two minutes, which is the amount of time dentists recommend for brushing teeth. While the song plays, kids can use an app to watch augmented reality characters come to life on their phones.The characters "pop out" of a sticker placed on the bathroom mirror and teach kids how to brush properly. Hoss says this is the first toothbrush to use AR."It's Pixar quality," says Dr. Hoss of the animation. "We spent years developing this to make sure it's beautiful."According to the CDC, around 20% of kindergarteners have some form of tooth decay. Studies show that children brush their teeth 73% longer when listening to music. The toothbrush also helps people know when it's time to buy a new one. If someone uses it to brush twice a day, the battery will die after three months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new food hall and beer garden is planned for National City with hopes of reinvigorating the neighborhood.Market on 8th is currently under construction at 41 E 8th Street. The 9,000-square-foot location will include at least eight eateries and retail locations, according to founding partner Joel Tubao."My family has been in the community here since 1968," Tubao said, who owns other properties in the area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A restaurant destroyed by a fatal fire last October reopened just in time for the holiday crowds. Kojack's Greek American fusion restaurant has been a Mission Beach staple for more than three decades. But last October, a fire started near the roof of the building and destroyed the ice cream shop and Kojack's on the bottom floor, as well as the apartment rooms on the second floor. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said 36-year-old apartment tenant, Aaron Porter died in the fire. Since the tragedy, the building and restaurant owner, Mike Soltan says he has worked tirelessly to get back onto his feet to reopen on his favorite holiday. "I never miss the Fourth of July on this beach for 33 years. So we tried so hard to make it, and finally, we did it." Soltan said. Longtime customer, Steve Grebing said he could not miss the grand reopening. "He [Soltan] kept saying in two weeks, two weeks. He was getting there, but now he is back here, so it's great," Grebing said. While the building itself is rebuilt, the renovations for the second floor are on hold. So no apartment tenants are able to live upstairs. Soltan also owns the ice cream shop next to Kojack's. Both shops reopened on July 4. 1226

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new mother got a big surprise when she walked into her garage in Linda Vista: A ripped fence and a missing, pricey bike.Kristen Farias had just put her 3-month-old daughter in the car early Thursday evening when she noticed her garage door was open. She and her husband have lived at the City Scene condo complex for eight years."Felt violated. Something just didn't seem right," said Farias.That something was a hole in a fence that separates her garage from her neighbor's. All of her belongings were untouched, except for something expensive: a Cannondale R500 triathlon bike - loaded with accessories - valued at some ,000."You just feel icky. Someone knows how to get into your belongings and take your stuff," said Farias.In this case the 'how' included the neighbor's garage door accidentally left open. The thief got into that garage and cut open up the shared fence. Detectives told Farias of a rash of other incidents. "Four times in the same area in the past month," said Farias.In each of the cases, the burglar somehow broke into one garage, then went to work on the fence."Just means people are lurking in the neighborhood, following you and seeing when there is an opportunity. That's scary," said Farias.Farias says the thief knew exactly what he wanted, leaving behind less expensive items. Her big fear is what could happen when the thief strikes the next time. She can't help but think she and her baby could have walked in on the burglar."Makes me sick to my stomach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local truck owner is making an emotional plea for the return of one of his late father's prized possessions.The empty space that greeted Brad Mouw in front of his San Carlos home on Ballinger Avenue hit him with a flood of emotions Thursday morning."Hurt, violated, and angry," said Mouw.His 2008 Dodge Dakota pickup was gone.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"My heart was broken. That truck belonged to my dad. He loved his truck. He drove it to work every day," said Mouw, choking back tears.Mouw says the truck is something his dad Marvin held close to his heart, even as he battled dementia.   Marvin Mouw passed away in 2016 in Iowa. His beloved truck was eventually driven to San Diego."I got to see my dad every day.  Pretty much think about my father every day I get into my truck," said Mouw.On Thursday, those precious moments disappeared before his eyes, as he watched his surveillance video.
