Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter won re-election in the 50th Congressional District, despite facing federal charges of campaign fraud. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Hunter had just over 54 percent of the vote against Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar."He's strong on the 2nd Amendment, he's strong on our defense, he's very pro-military," said Dan Summers, a Ramona resident who voted for Hunter and celebrated at his campaign event Tuesday night. Hunter did not make himself available to the media, and in a statement said he looked forward to representing the 50th Congressional District on issues that matter to them."For 10 years, I have consistently and unapologetically focused on rebuilding the military, protecting the border, which includes a border wall, cutting taxes, supporting our veterans, creating small business jobs and economic development, upholding the 2nd Amendment and protecting the sanctity of life," Hunter said in the statement. Hunter's statement did not address the criminal charges, which he and his wife Margaret pleaded not guilty to in Federal Court earlier this year. The two are accused of misusing 0,000 in campaign contributions and falsifying reports. Still, if convicted, there is no rule in the House that Hunter would have to give up his seat. Expulsion requires a two-thirds vote, which would require Republican votes.Political analyst John Dadian says he sees Hunter fighting to keep his seat. "Technically he could still serve, and technically he could still serve from a jail cell," he said. "For example, he were to only get one year he could technically stay in and when he gets out in a year have a year left on his term."Under California law, the governor would have 14 days to set an election date for a vacant House seat. That would happen between 126 and 140 days later, or with the next regular election, if it's within 180 days. The Hunters are due back in court Dec. 3. 2005
President-elect Joe Biden pleaded with Americans to adopt public health best practices during the Thanksgiving holiday in the hopes of preventing the spread of COVID-19.Biden called for unity among Americans in attempting to snuff out the spread of the virus."We're at war with the virus. Not with one another. Not with each other," he said.Biden pleaded with Americans to avoid large gatherings over Thanksgiving and added that the nation owed it to essential health care workers, who are currently battling a concerning spike in cases."The federal government can't (fight the virus) alone," Biden said.Biden said he would be celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday in Delaware on Thursday along with his wife, Jill, his daughter and his son-in-law. He added that it would be among the smallest Thanksgiving gatherings the family has had in 40 years.Biden's announcement comes as the U.S. finds itself in a perilous position ahead of the holiday — COVID-19 cases are spiking to levels previously unseen since the pandemic arrived in the country, and health experts fear that large family gatherings across the country could continue to facilitate the spread of the virus. The CDC has recommended that Americans not travel to celebrate Thanksgiving, and Dr. Anthony Fauci has recommended that celebrations be limited to members of a single household. But Americans seem poised to ignore those recommendations. At least one survey says that 1 in 3 parents believe that the benefits of gathering at Thanksgiving outweigh the risk of the coronavirus.Biden's address comes a day after he formally announced who he will nominate for six key administration positions. It also comes a day after President Donald Trump participated in the annual turkey pardon at the White House. 1774
Rent the Runway announced on Friday that they would not be reopening their stores. In a blog post, the clothing rental company said they would focus on expanding their drop-off box program, with their New York flagship store turning into a drop-off-only site. According to the company's website, its locations in San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Chicago are permanently closed. The stores were used for customers to drop off items and swap out for whatever they needed."With customers in 76% of US zip codes and RTR stores in only 5 of them, less than 15% of our customers were served by our stores — but the drop-off capability was so loved by them," the company said in the blog post. "That’s when we knew we had to bring this convenience to even more customers by expanding our Drop-off Box network through key partnerships and retailers."In 2018, the company partnered up with WeWork, Nordstrom, and West Elm as they expanded their return program.Back in March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the company laid off all of its retail staff "to safeguard the future of our staff and business." 1105
