During this pandemic, people aren’t interacting like they used to.Many schools have moved online, restaurants have moved outdoors, and public transportation is spacing out its seating.With less face-to-face interaction in the real world, scientists are now turning to artificial intelligence.“Robots are our friends,” said Jeffrey Krichmar, Ph.D., a professor of cognitive sciences at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).Recently, Krichmar’s team started testing socially assistive robots with the goal of helping people perform household chores, accomplish health care tasks and even offer them emotional support.“That could be very helpful if a person is impaired and can’t get help in the home because they’re locked down or quarantined,” he said.Krichmar says there’s a lot of societal benefits with this technology, too, like helping people cope with their feelings during isolation.“If I’m not able to get to you, but you have a robot there I can log on through the robot, have a conversation with you and then maybe do tasks around the house with a robot,” he said.Many of UCI’s robotic projects involve the Toyota Human Support Robot.“When you think about the social interaction, I think we’re all feeling this right now,” said Douglas Moore, Toyota’s director of technology for human support.Moore says working with UCI during the COVID-19 crisis could help many people both physically and emotionally.“One of the silver linings that I think we’re going to get out of this pandemic that we’re currently in, we’re going to develop a little bit more sympathy and empathy for the communities that idea with this on a day-to-day basis that have no real light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.Project leaders hope to get more of these robots in people’s homes“The ones that we’re doing with Toyota, they’re not commercially available yet and the ones that are a little pricey,” Krichmar said. “They’re like an expensive luxury car right now.”Krichmar believes more interest could help lower the cost of these robots and that more attention could create future innovation.“This pandemic is our Fukushima moment in a way,” Krichmar said of the COVID-19 crisis.“If this drags on a lot longer, it might be actually useful for this particular crisis,” he said. “But I’m almost thinking like the next crisis down the road.” 2338

(KGTV) - A crowd gathered in El Cajon to honor the life of a man, killed in a hit-and-run accident, on the day he was supposed to be married.Steven Johnson - a father of six and a grandfather - was riding his motorcycle to work at a Lakeside trucking company Friday, the 2nd, when he crashed around 5:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 67 just past Willows Road.He never recovered, and passed away Wednesday.Saturday, his fiancé Karlene Moen stood in front of friends and family at their wedding venue, complete with the cake and flowers, and told them how Johnson helped and inspired so many."It's amazing to see how many people's lives he actually did touch because I've always just heard about it and I've never actually seen it," Moen said. Johnson was a sponsor for drug addicts and alcoholics. He was sober almost 16 years, according to Moen. Several men told 10News they're only here today because of Johnson. They said they became sober because Johnson truly believed in them.Moen said she and her fiancé met at an NAA meeting, "he taught me how to live my life sober, he taught me how to love my kids sober, he taught me how to be a mom sober, he taught me how to be a friend sober."As she thought about her wedding day, tears filled her eyes, "we were supposed to be married today, I was supposed to take his hand and unite as one." Wiping away tears she continued, "It's messing me up, and I almost don't want to be here, because it hurts so bad, it, I feel pain in my chest."She fretted about their wedding day, saying a week before the big day she helped him get an outfit. "I didn't get to wear my wedding dress that I picked out especially for him, that I knew that when he looked at me that he would think that I was the most beautiful woman he's seen," she said mournfully.One lasting question in her mind, "I just want to know why? DoorDash customers can now order groceries through its app.The company announced that they have partnered up with several grocery stores in select cities across the country to limit people's trip to stores due to COVID-19.Customers will be able to purchase from stores like Smart & Final, Meijer, and Fresh Thyme.In the coming weeks, the company will partner up with Hy-Vee and Gristedes/D'agostino."DoorDash provides another convenient way for customers to get the value, selection, and quality that Smart & Final offers, especially at a time when some are looking to limit trips outside their homes," said Navin Cotton, Director of Digital Commerce, Smart & Final in the press release. EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) - Students at a private school in El Cajon are scheduled to return to class next month.Parents of children at Foothills Christian Middle School got a letter from the school over the weekend outlining their re-opening plan.According to the letter, the school will re-open September 8th.A local mom contacted 10News concerned about the plan. She didn't give her name because she doesn't want retaliation against her daughter. She was surprised at the September return date."If schools could be open, I would send her to school, if the county said we could do that, I would do that, but they're saying we can't go to school and we should be wearing masks," said the mom.According to the letter, there is a five step plan for reopening:*Regular COVID-19 self-check screening questions*Temperature readings prior to entering campus*Hand hygiene*Environmental Cleaning/Sanitization and Refillable Water Bottle Stations*Face masks/coveringsThe letter states that face coverings will not be required, but will be optional on campus. It goes on to list several reasons, including:*There is a lack of evidence that wearing a face mask prevents COVID-19 transmission in children*Children are not typically trained in their use and there is potential for increased risk of infection with improper mask use*Masks can be irritating and may lead to increased touching of face and eyes*It is impractical for a child to wear a mask properly for the duration of the school dayThe mom who contacted us says this will send mixed messages to her child."What we're telling her at home is completely different than, this is completely opposite of everything we're doing. So it's shocking to her, she's like why wouldn't I wear a mask," said the mom.The letter states wearing a mask will be the personal choice of students or faculty, but there may be some occasions where face coverings are required, like field trips."I wouldn't want her to wear a mask at school and be peer pressured not to, or be made fun of for wearing it," said the mom.As far as social distancing, the letter only states, "we will do our best to encourage physical distancing."The letter asks parents and their child to sign it, agreeing to the terms before returning to school.According to CA's governor, counties on the state's COVID-19 monitoring list cannot open schools for in-person instruction.
