SAN DIEGO (CNS) - National University announced Wednesday its Board of Trustees approved a plan to reduce the cost of attendance through tuition cuts of up to 25% for full-time students and adding scholarships that will make enrollment nearly free for Pell Grant eligible students.The actions -- made possible through a 2019 gift to the La Jolla university's reserve fund by philanthropist T. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, announced the formation of a panel of servicemembers, veterans, and other community leaders who will work together on recommendations to name either an Oceanside or San Diego Department of Veterans Affairs facility after a woman veteran.The VA Facility Dedication Advisory Panel will compile a report on notable women veterans with ties to the region who are worthy of the honor. Currently, there are no VA facilities in the United States that are named after women veterans, and neither the San Diego VA Medical Center nor the Oceanside VA Clinic are named after an individual.The panel is led by Army Veteran and Carlsbad resident Karin Brennan."Throughout our nation's history, women have served and sacrificed for our freedom just like men, but have often gone without the recognition they deserve," Levin said."It is past time to rectify that injustice and live up to our responsibility to honor all veterans, including women. It's disappointing that not a single VA facility in the country is named after a woman veteran, but we can change that here in our district."In September 2020, the VA released the 2020 Report of its Advisory Committee on Women Veterans. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A public hearing regarding the proposed placement of a convicted sex offender at a supervised home in Pauma Valley is scheduled for July 31, officials said today.Joseph Bocklett, 75, was convicted of three sexual offenses over a 19- year period involving victims between the ages of 4 and 9, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. He was last sentenced in 2000 to a 17-year prison term and later civilly committed to Coalinga State Hospital to undergo treatment.Bocklett is classified as a Sexually Violent Predator, a designation for those convicted of sexually violent offenses and diagnosed with a mental disorder that makes them a danger to the public.Bocklett petitioned the court last year to be granted release into the Conditional Release program and on Monday, the Department of State Hospitals proposed that Bocklett be housed at 15077 Adams Drive.Sexually Violent Predators are monitored via GPS ankle devices and are typically placed in low population areas.Members of the public may submit comments regarding the proposed placement location until July 14. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A new indictment unsealed Thursday against the owner/operators of San Diego-based pornographic website GirlsDoPorn.com alleges that co-owner Michael James Pratt -- who remains on the lam on federal sex trafficking charges -- also produced pornographic content involving a 16-year- old girl. Pratt was charged in a complaint last month along with three others with sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion for allegedly filming victims under the guise of distributing the videos only to private clients, then disseminating the videos online without the victims' knowledge or consent. The new indictment adds two additional defendants and charges of production of child pornography and sex trafficking of a minor against Pratt alone, with the incidents allegedly occurring in September 2012. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, numerous young women who initially responded to ads for modeling jobs were allegedly deceived by the defendants to appear in adult films. Once the victims learned the work involved pornography, the defendants allegedly told them the videos would be distributed to private clients -- usually living overseas -- and not disseminated on the internet. To help convince the women to participate, reference women like Nored were allegedly hired to lie to the women and claim they had also filmed pornographic videos for the defendants, which were never posted on the internet. The defendants are also currently involved in a San Diego civil trial involving a lawsuit filed by 22 women who appeared in videos on the site. The allegations in that trial -- which began in mid-August -- mirror the new federal charges. In that case, the victims are seeking more than million in damages and ownership rights to the videos they appeared in.
