BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has urged authorities of a southeastern province to press ahead with its reforms and opening-up, and to embrace innovations in its economic development.In his four-day inspection tour in Fujian Province that began Friday, Xi spent time visiting high-tech enterprises, inquiring about villagers' incomes and held talks with university students.Efforts should be made to improve people's livelihood and solve practical difficulties for them with regard to employment, medical care, housing and children's schooling, Xi said during his visit to villages and urban communities.When visiting areas hit by June's torrential rains and massive floods, Xi urged local authorities to continue with disaster-relief work, rebuild damaged homes and agricultural infrastructures, as well as increase support for enterprises.In the coastal city of Xiamen, Xi urged government administrations in Fujian to take proactive measures to offer services to, and create "better conditions", for people from Taiwan.Further, efforts should be made to expand the scope and upgrade the level of cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, he said.

Beijing, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Officials from 28 countries across Asia and the Pacific gathered Thursday in Beijing for a high-level meeting on cooperation on children's rights in the Asia-Pacific region.Anthony Lake, executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), called for collaboration among Asia Pacific countries in protecting children's rights in a speech delivered at the meeting.Lake said,"We are already seeing the benefits of cooperation in areas that cut across borders, from preventing the spread of disease, to addressing the effects of climate change, to increasing child protection, to improving education."During the three-day meeting, more than 180 representatives from 28 countries in the Asia-Pacific region are expected to discuss issues on children's welfare and protection and the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), these being eight global anti-poverty objectives due to be accomplished by 2015.The meeting, scheduled from November 4 to 6, is hosted by the All-China Women's Federation, the National Working Committee for Children and Women under the State Council, China's Ministry of Commerce, and with support from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

DUBLIN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Li Changchun said here Sunday that Beijing and Dublin have huge potential to deepen bilateral ties and cooperation.Since the two sides established diplomatic relations 31 years ago,bilateral relations have developed steadily, said Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, upon his arrival for a two-day official goodwill visit.Especially in recent years, China and Ireland have increased high-level exchanges, carried out fruitful and mutually-beneficial cooperation in various fields including politics, trade, education, culture and science and technology, and maintained close coordination on international affairs, he noted.Li Changchun (L, Front), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, is welcomed by Irish officials upon his arrival in Dublin, capital of Ireland, on Sept. 26, 2010. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fanapi is likely to land on the east coast of Taiwan on Sunday, said China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) in Beijing Friday.The center of the year' s 11th typhoon was about 700 km southeast from Hualien, in Taiwan, said a statement from the center.It was moving northwest towards Hualien and increasing in strength, the statement noted.The administration has issued a warning regarding huge waves which might strike off the Hualien coast, it said.On Sunday, the southern East China Sea might also produce waves of 4 to 6 meters high and waves in the Taiwan Strait might rise to 3 to 4 meters.Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces along the mainland's southeast coast would also be affected by the typhoon, the statement said.The statement warned all fishing boats in the region to take necessary precautions.The fishing season began in the East China Sea in mid-September and a large number of vessels are in the area.Additionally, Typhoon Fanapi could continue moving west after landing on Taiwan and strike Fujian and Guangdong, the statement said.Also on Friday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs launched an early-warning for disaster relief responses aimed at the typhoon's possible damages to the southeastern coastal areas.The ministry and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction instructed local governments to carefully keep track of the typhoon's movement and the changes in weather, and strengthen prevention measures for geological disasters and flooding in urban areas.Local governments were also urged to evacuate residents in high-risk areas while providing for their basic living necessities.
