SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Internationally, night markets invoke a sense — and smell — of wonder in its visitors, from delicious street cuisine to unique crafts to entertainment.The Convoy District hopes to capture that magic for San Diegans during San Diego Night Market at SDCCU Stadium. Saturday (4 p.m. - 12 a.m.) and Sunday (4 p.m. - 9 p.m.), the stadium expects 15,000 visitors hoping to experience that magic of bustling nighttime markets in big cities throughout Asia.The market first launched in 2013 at Kearny Mesa's Zion Market, only expecting about 2,000 attendees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In three weeks San Diego County will elect its next district attorney, and in a recent poll a large number of voters indicated that they're still undecided. The results of our scientific 10News Union-Tribune poll shows the battle between Summer Stephan and challenger Genevieve Jones-Wright is wide open. If the election were held today, Summer Stephan would get 35 percent of the vote. Genevieve Jones-Wright would get 22 percent and 43 percent of those polled said they are undecided. "Those polls are consistent with what our campaign research shows," Jones-Wright told 10News. "We knew we were up against a political machine and it really is no surprise to me that she's up on the polls."Progressive candidate Jones-Wright says Stephan got a head start, by being appointed to the district attorney job when Bonnie Dumanis left. Jones-Wright said she thinks the poll shows her campaign is gaining steam.Stephan was encouraged by the poll numbers. "This is very encouraging, what you're telling me, because it shows that what we're doing is working," she told 10News. "That San Diegans are enjoying that we're one of the safest urban regions in the country and that they really prefer experience over an experiment."The poll shows that Stephan's voter base is republican, white and over the age of 35. It shows that Wright's voter base is younger, more racially mixed and primarily democratic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit.Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. But according to Veterans United Home Loans, VA loans in California are surging, and they’re up 15 percent this year in San Diego.Navy veteran Robert Streets and his wife Corrie are part of that surge."There was a large cabinet that came out here, and we knocked that down," says Streets in his recently remodeled kitchen.The Streets are proud to show off their new home. "I own this, and I can do whatever I want. I don't have to ask somebody if I can put a hole in the wall or hang a picture."While Millennials are struggling to buy in San Diego, Millennial Veterans are surging in home purchases, up 61 percent according to Veterans United with an average purchase price of almost 0,000. And for the Streets, it was made possible using a VA Loan. "They got all the paperwork together, all the legal stuff sorted out, and they actually made the condo VA qualified so that we were able to use our VA loan. Which wouldn't have ever been in here if it wasn't for that," says Corrie Streets.The Streets are far from alone. He and his wife Tessie rented for 30 years. That's when their daughter-in-law Aurora Perez, a realtor at Century 21, helped them understand they could qualify for a VA loan."They were able to purchase a home with my help in the Temecula area,” says Perez. "And then they were able to purchase another home in Oceanside and turn that into an investment property."Currently, there is a 0,000 cap on VA loans in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday activist groups rallied at events throughout the day with the same message, more needs to be done to stop police brutality."My son was not killed he was murdered," Richard Abuka's son, Alfred Olango, was shot and killed by police in El Cajon back in 2016.Monday morning he stood on the steps of the Hall of Justice with other activists dredging up tragedy, compelling people to hear their message that new policies to hold police accountable need to be put in place. They held a banner with the names of those lost at the hands of law enforcement throughout the county."I've been pulled over numerous times, ripped out of my car, my car searched just because I'm driving with tattoos," a former convict by the nickname "Flaco" said at the Teach-In event held at San Diego City College.The events all supporting the National Day of Actions to Stop Police Brutality."We don't need cops," panelists spoke on ways to find a solution."I do work with the police and the DAs department in training their officers, and I help run a restorative justice program that's city wide and I'm expanding it to county wide," Aeiramique Blake said.
