SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Highway Patrol officers arrested fewer people than last year for suspected drunk driving in San Diego County so far during the Christmas holiday enforcement period, the agency said today.CHP officers arrested 33 people in the county between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Sunday, an officer said. That's down from 40 arrests in the area at the same time last year.Statewide, the CHP arrested 639 people for suspected DUI violations Friday night and early Sunday, up from 604 in 2017.There were 20 traffic fatalities reported by law enforcement agencies across the state during the period -- including one in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local realtor who molested two underage girls apologized to his victims during a court hearing Friday, while those speaking on behalf of the victims said they could take solace in the fact that he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.Donald Edward Hickey, 62, pleaded guilty last month to five felonies, including lewd and lascivious acts with a child and possession of child pornography for material investigators found on three separate devices.Hickey was initially set to be sentenced to a 25-years-to-life term on Friday, but the hearing was postponed until Sept. 6 so that an interview can be conducted for his probation report, which could affect his future in-custody housing considerations.Prosecutors did not disclose how Hickey knew the victims, but according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt, the molestations occurred sometime between 2009 and 2012 in San Diego County. Hickey was arrested last year following a cyber tip sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.The former Clairemont resident, who worked as a real estate agent out of La Jolla, was found to have ``thousands'' of videos and images of child pornography in his possession, some of which depicted Hickey abusing children.``This defendant not only preyed on these children, but he also memorialized what he did so that he could retain a copy of the real-time abuse of those children,'' Marquardt said.Hickey's attorney, Danielle Iredale, said Hickey was molested by a local man in his neighborhood when Hickey was between the ages of 10 and 12.Hickey told those in attendance, ``I'm sorry for everything that's happened. I take responsibility for it and I hope they do heal from it.'' Despite the postponed sentencing, victims were allowed to speak Friday in case they could not attend Hickey's sentencing next month.One of the girls, identified in court only as Jane Doe 2, said she was working to put the experience behind her, and was working on forgiving Hickey, though ``I am conflicted,'' she said. ``Because I don't know how you came to be the way you are and feel sympathy for your sickness. She said she was nervous about speaking at the hearing, but would regret it if she didn't.``No teenager should be in a situation where they sit down and think about what they're going to say to a pedophile,'' Jane Doe 2 said. ``No parent should have to decide whether or not to tell their child that they have been assaulted. I hate that you put my family in that position.''Jane Doe 1 did not attend the hearing. Her older sister told Hickey that she wanted to attend, but ``was absolutely terrified to see your face.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of fatally stabbing a 65-year-old clerk inside an adult bookstore in the Midway District pleaded not guilty Friday to felony murder charges that could lead to the death penalty if he's convicted.Shaun Ward, 39, was non-responsive and kept his head down during his arraignment. He was ordered held without bail in the death of 65-year-old Diane Spagnuolo.Ward refused to answer questions from Judge Maureen Hallahan about his true name or date of birth.The judge read Ward his constitutional rights and his attorney entered the not guilty plea for him.Ward was charged with murder and special circumstance allegations that the murder was committed during a robbery and that the murder involved the infliction of torture.District Attorney Summer Stephan will decide later if Ward will face life in prison without the possibility of parole or capital punishment if he's found guilty.The victim was found dead inside the X Spot Adult Store on Midway Drive on Monday afternoon, according to San Diego police. Ward was arrested late that night at a residence in San Diego.A surveillance camera in the adult shop captured images of Ward prior to the slaying, reported about 12:45 p.m., police said.Ward will be back in court Nov. 14 for a status conference. 1290

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Councilwoman Barbara Bry Wednesday increased her lead for second place for the third straight day over Councilman Scott Sherman in the San Diego mayoral primary election.The two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election in November, so depending on the final vote count, San Diego voters look likely to be choosing between Assemblyman Todd Gloria and Bry.Should Gloria and Bry face off, it would guarantee San Diego its first Democrat mayor since Bob Filner resigned in 2013 and just the second Democrat elected to the nonpartisan position -- several Democrats served as interim mayors in 2005 and 2013 -- since Maureen O'Connor stepped down in 1992.Gloria, a former San Diego city councilman and interim mayor, has a more than 64,000-vote lead over both Bry and Sherman and is virtually assured to make it onto the November general election ballot.Bry currently has a 444-vote lead over Sherman, a Republican.With a projected 25,000 ballots left to be counted, and with Sherman's election-night lead of more than 3,000 votes in the rear-view, November is looking all but assured to be a showdown between the two Democrats. 1172

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A towering palm tree and the tree trimmer strapped to it came toppling down inside the lobby area at a University City-area hotel Thursday. The tree was being cut down at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla, 4550 La Jolla Village Drive, when it struck a person shortly before 11 a.m., according to police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. San Diego Police told 10News the injured man was a tree trimmer. Medics took the victim, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Joe Jaha, a supervisor at Arbor West Tree Surgeons, says a 3-man crew was at the hotel to take down three large palms in the lobby. He says the tree trimmer was 30 feet up the final, 40-foot palm. He had taken off the top and was trying to bring it down when the tree uprooted, with the tree and tree trimmer crashing to the ground. The tree trimmer, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg and arm."It had highly unusual, shallow roots, which we couldn't detect until it was too late.
