Families still returning home to San Diego after surviving the deadly earthquake in Mexico City.Jorge Jiron and his wife are back in the US after nearly 24 hours of chaos. "when it hit it started shaking real bad," he said. He was in a building that sits on the side of a canyon nearly 12 floors up. Suddenly, everything started to move. "\We were close to the exit, on your way out it is shaking hard but you're really paying attention to everybody and their instructions to get out," said Jiron. "Then, that's when you realize everything is shaking, the windows are shaking the hard, the electric poles are really moving, then you see people that are nervous."The 7.1 magnitude quake was crumbling buildings, shattering windows and sending debris flying through the air. "You're walking you're moving, so you don't realize how bad it is until you're actually standing in one place and you see everything moving around you. When you realize it's already stopped, it takes seconds."They were supposed to fly back to the US Tuesday night, but there was no way out. "The main road that goes to the airport was completely packed with cars. A 30-minute drive would have been 5 or 6 hours," said Jiron.  1241

(KGTV) - A 13-year-old boy suffered burns to his face after a science experiment at Capri Elementary School in Encinitas went awry.Priest Rivera, a 6th-grade student, said a teacher was attempting to show a group of students an experiment known as the “black snake” or “carbon snake” when it exploded in his face.The experiment involves mixing sugar and baking soda with a flammable liquid and lighting it on fire to create a snake-like reaction.Rivera said the teacher told them to stand in a semi-circle around her on the field as she lit the experiment on fire.“The teacher kept on pouring more rubbing alcohol onto the flame itself because the flame wasn’t building up,” said Rivera.That’s about all he remembers before waking up in an ambulance with a sharp pain all over his face.“My face was constantly burning and burning,” he said. “I still feel it right now.”He spent six days in the hospital and underwent four surgeries, according to his mom Gina Rivera.“It was just hell,” she said about the experience. “He kept saying, ‘mom am I going to go blind?’”Priest kept his eyesight but two weeks after the accident, still had bandages around his face to protect the burn areas.Gina said it’s still unclear how bad the injuries will end up being though she said the effects will be long-lasting. “It has halted his life. It’s changed his life,” she said.The outgoing superintendent of the Encinitas Union School District, Timothy Baird, told 10News they could not comment on any specifics because the incident involved a student. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai.The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain.The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters.The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight.The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money.
