CORONADO (KGTV) - Police found a man who went missing from Sacred Heart Church this evening. Vincent Banez, 31-years-old, went missing around 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening, according to Coronado Police. He was last seen near the church, located at 655 C Avenue before he was found safely around 8:30 p.m.Police describe him as an Asian male wearing a black sweater, yellow pants and on a red motorized scooter. He needs the scooter to get around, but he is social and able to interact, police said.A helicopter circled Coronado looking for the man and relayed information to residents.This is a developing story. 10News will update as details become available. 690

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Three Coronado restaurants were closed for cleaning on Tuesday after employees tested positive for the coronavirus. One of the restaurants, The Henry, is facing backlash over accusations that it was not transparent with its patrons.On Facebook, The Henry posted the following message on Monday night.“Coronado neighbors,We apologize for not being more transparent with you about our first COVID positive case last week. Even though we messed up our communication, please know that we took all the right actions to make sure our guests, our employees and our restaurant space were as safe as possible before we re-opened.We went through our entire protocol for a COVID exposure the night after we became aware one of our employees was COVID positive. This includes third-party sanitation of the restaurant, contacting all employees before they returned to work to make sure we knew who had CDC defined exposure to the COVID employee and making sure all employees had access to testing at our cost, regardless of exposure. We got lucky that we were able to get this done so quickly. That has not always been the case. In another restaurant out-of-state, we had to close a restaurant for nearly a week as we waited for the sanitation company and sufficient staff to safely reopen. No one in our industry is happy about the fact we are all getting more experienced and better at responding to COVID exposures.Some of you have asked us why we did not notify the San Diego Health Department about the COVID positive employee. We know the employee's health care provider has notified the Health Department and that we, as employers, are not required to do so. But because of your question today and after calling the San Diego Health Department who encouraged voluntary notification, the Henry is committing to do so. With all of this in mind, this evening we notified the Health Department that we received information about a second COVID positive employee.The employee in this second case was last in the restaurant on Thursday, July 2. We are closing the restaurant early this evening and will be proceeding with sanitation and employee contacts. This time, we do not expect to be able to complete all of these procedures before our regular opening tomorrow. The Henry will be closed until we can go through our protocols, all of which mirror the San Diego Health Department's and CDC guidance.These are challenging times. We are learning how to do this better each day. Thank you for making us better. We hope to regain your trust and serve you again soon.”There are now hundreds of comments from members of the public. Many of the comments express concern that The Henry waited until after the 4th of July holiday weekend to make notification.Nearby McP’s Irish Pub and Hide Tide Bottle Shop and Kitchen were also temporarily closed for cleaning because of virus cases.On Tuesday, McP’s Irish Pub posted the following.“Good morning, For the health, safety and well-being of our valued customers, staff and community, McP’s Irish Pub will be closed beginning today to conduct a deep sanitization cleaning. This is being done per San Diego Co. Health Dept guidelines as one of our team members has tested positive for Covid19.PLEASE!PLEASE!PLEASE! be safe out there and follow what is recommended, let's all be part of the solution!See you all soon!!!”On Monday, Hide Tide Bottle Shop and Kitchen posted the following.“We will be closing today at 4:30 pm. Unfortunately, one of our staff tested positive for COVID-19. We are following the health department protocol and will be closed for a minimum of 48 hours for deep cleaning and time for all our staff to be tested. We will keep you posted. Please follow the rules! It's important! We care about you!”On Tuesday, ABC10 News asked San Diego County about whether restaurants are required to notify the public about employee cases. A spokesperson for the County wrote, "We leave it to the business, ANY business, to notify their customers. If we believe there is a risk to the public beyond that which would require further notification, we would notify the public."The County reports that medical providers are required to notify County health officials about employees who’ve tested positive. When ABC10News asked about whether restaurant employers are required to do the same, the County referred us to the state’s website which reports in part that employers should prepare to notify their local health department if there’s an outbreak or lab confirmed cases in the workplace.On Tuesday, ABC10 News asked The Henry for an interview. A spokesperson for the restaurant group said they were too busy to do an interview. ABC10 News’ calls to Hide Tide Bottle Shop and Kitchen went unanswered. Consumers are already spending big this holiday season, particularly online.With Black Friday right around the corner and the COVID-19 pandemic keeping shoppers online, consumers spent nearly billion while online shopping between Nov. 1 and Nov. 10, according to Check Point Security Software.But along with that increase in online shopping, Check Point also says it has seen a massive uptick in scammers looking to take advantage.In the last month alone, the company says malicious shopping emails have jumped from 1 in every 11,000 to one in every 1,000."They're using some of those again less sensational but very frequent terms like 'cheap' and 'sale' and 'percentage off' and 'special offers' to attract folks to click on some of these unsolicited emails," Mark Ostrowski of Check Point Software said.Scammers are using convincing lookalike emails to conduct phishing campaigns in the U.S. and abroad. One malicious email mimicked an ad for a Pandora jewelry that looked legitimate — outside of a misspelling of "Pandora."Ostrowski says shoppers should pay attention to grammar and spelling mistakes in marketing emails — they could be a red flag for scams. He also recommends mousing over hyperlinks before clicking on them to double-check where they're sending you.Ostrowski also says to be aware of seemingly legitimate emails that request personal information or passwords."I can't tell you how many times that I get an email — every single week — about how I need a password to be reset that I never asked to be reset," he said. "The one I've been getting the most lately is open enrollment. I get an email for open enrollment for healthcare every week, and I know that we're not doing that for at least another month."The Better Business Bureau also says it has seen a rise in online shopping scams, and more than 80% of those who fall victim to them lose money. Many of those scams aren't arriving as emails but are coming up in Google searches and social media posts. The BBB recommends taking time to research a website before deciding to make a purchase.Finally, experts recommend setting strong passwords for online accounts. Nordpass reports that hackers can easily steal information from accounts protected by easy-to-guess passwords, like 123456. The service says any combination of numbers can take just seconds for hackers to crack. 2365

  

Colleges across the country are finalizing plans to welcome students back. Some are bringing students fully back on campus, while others are going completely digital. Regardless of what colleges decide, many students are still planning to live on or near campus."We've come up, we think, with a plan that provides a lot of flexibility in options and recognizes the difficulties and strengths that our students, faculty and staff are faced with in light of COVID-19," said Lisa Lynch, the Provost at Brandeis University just outside of Boston.Brandeis, like Harvard, Princeton, Georgetown and all California State universities, will be offering online classes to students in the fall to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. There will still be in-person classes at a majority of universities offering online courses.Harvard is allowing minimal in-person classes, while Princeton is only allowing first- and third-year students on campus for the first semester and second- and fourth-year students for the second semester.Brandeis is offering some hybrid classes that are half online and half in person with small groups, but class sizes will be dramatically reduced."A mix of taking some lectures that perhaps have been pre-recorded or even listening in through Zoom on a live lecture, but then having opportunities to have small, in-person meetings with other students and professors and teaching assistants," said Lynch.All in-person classes will have a maximum of 28 students. Despite the online offerings and class restrictions, university officials say most students are still making the decision to live at school, not take classes online while living at home. This begs the question – will the online classes even make a difference amid the current COVID-19 pandemic?"I think the real hard thing is where you share a dorm room. Two people in the same room is hard to social distance in any real respect, in that case. But if a lot of people are online and you only have one person per room, then you have an ability to have a little more social distancing," said Dr. Kenny Banh, an emergency physician and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education at UCSF-Fresno.Brandeis is only allowing one person per dorm room and even reserving extra housing for students who may test positive for COVID-19 and need to quarantine while at school. It's one of numerous brand-new health and safety procedures being implemented at the school, which also include twice weekly free coronavirus tests for all students and staff."The testing - asymptomatic testing - is mandatory. We'll also have everyone when they come to campus do a daily health gestation test. It's a very quick online tool that goes through and asks about fever, how they're feeling, if they're a student. And if they answer a question and it raises a flag, they’ll be immediately directed to our health center," said Lynch.With all the precautions universities are taking, it'll still be tough to prevent the social interactions that students want and need."There's no control with off-campus living, obviously, and students unfortunately tend to congregate together because it's a cheaper cost of living, right? I was a poor college student, so you often share a space because that’s what you could afford and you're trying to tend for the lowest cost possible. Unfortunately, we’ve showed our ability to socially distance and self-isolate in the younger generation is not as good," said Banh.While colleges won't be able to prevent off-campus social gatherings, many acknowledge that most healthy students aren't at the highest risk for COVID-19 complications and that any forced isolation at this critical age of their emotional and social development could do more harm than good."Recognizing in surveys, we saw with our students, in particular with our students in the spring, the process of being at home and trying to continue with studies contributed to a significant increase in stress, depression and sense of isolation," said Lynch."I think universities are doing the best they can do to be responsible. I think having an online option and having a significant part of people online will actually mitigate the risk for those there in person. So, if you take half the people and half of them are not there, then social distancing and all that stuff becomes much safer, especially for those people that are physically there," said Banh.Brandeis is also using advanced contact tracing technology so that if and when a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, they're able to immediately determine all classmates, residential halls and more, that are affected. They’re hoping to quickly mitigate any spread of virus in an academic environment that thrives on social interaction. 4773
