"Be prepared" is the motto of the Boy Scouts of America, so when COVID-19 hit, pack leaders quickly pivoted to a virtual platform to help boy and cub scouts finish their year requirements. This fall, though, the organization is working on some new efforts to keep kids safely involved during the pandemic."Schools having a virtual start and then delaying the start at least two or three weeks, in most cases. It has slowed down the year-to-year comparison for children joining and we think that, to some extent, we will not recover completely on the number of children on a year-to-year extent," said Tracy Techau, Scout Executive of the Atlanta Area Chapter of the Boys Scouts of America. Techau says besides yard signs, most scout recruiting turned digital this year.Techau says scouting organizations across the country are finding creative ways to get children involved and outdoors while still adhering to government regulations for social distancing. "It varies from community to community. There are certain states that have greater restrictions for social activities," said Techau.Pack leader Lindsey Paris always starts off the scouting year with her den with a bottle rocket building and launching activity. This year it will look a little different. "We had a digital tutorial build. Bring all your stuff up to Zoom, we’ll build the rockets together and then were going to put every family in a parking spot and when it's your turn, approach the launch pad and try to get that shot. So, we’ll be around other families but we’ll be wearing our masks," said Paris.Scouting leaders are also hoping to safely bring children the socialization that they've been missing. Especially if the kids are in virtual learning this fall. "I think it's important to see your friends, catch up with them. I know I need that socialization. Just Zooms with my friends and family, I think it's the same for them," said Paris."Children are missing their friends. They're not developing the social skills, the group dynamics, the social norming that is so important for children. It's just not really happening right now for children since schools are virtual. Cub Scouts offers that experience," said Techau. Techau believes activities like scouting are crucial during this time."Scouting is more important now than ever for several reasons. First, the whole motto of Scouts is to be prepared. And all of us want to be prepared as we work through the situations of COVID-19 and whatever happens this fall, this winter, next spring. (CNN) - A San Jose home was a scene of carnage after an apparent quadruple homicide and suicide, police said.Officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired at the home around 8:40 p.m. Sunday night."Arriving officers located several family members fleeing the residence," San Jose police said.Police used an armored vehicle to help rescue two gunshot victims from the home. But both of those victims, a male and a female, died shortly later."Two other adult female victims and the suspect were still unaccounted for and believed to be in the residence," police said.At around 1:25 a.m. Monday, officers entered the home and found the two missing female victims and the suspect. All three had been shot, and all three were pronounced dead at the scene.The names of the victims and suspect have not been released, pending notification of relatives. Authorities have not detailed the relationships between the five people."It appears the suspect shot the four victims before committing suicide by shooting himself," police said. (CNN) -- An atmospheric river is moving to the West Coast, likely to bring menacing flooding, heavy mountain snow, and damaging winds.Atmospheric rivers are narrow corridors of the upper atmosphere that transport intense moisture from a large body of water onto land.Track the latest weather and holiday travel delaysThe Pineapple Express is a specific atmospheric river that originates near Hawaii and travels across the Pacific Ocean to the western coast of North America.Oregon and Washington will see the worst of the stormThursday through Saturday, heavy precipitation will move into Oregon and Washington. Coastal regions will become saturated from very heavy rain, with as much as 4-8 inches expected.The higher elevations of Oregon and California can expect heavy snow, with possible totals of 5-20 inches. Forecasts for the Cascade Mountains in Washington are even higher, with totals expected between 1-3 feet.Ice is also possible for portions of the Hood River Valley Thursday. Accumulations of up to three-tenths of an inch are possible, which could lead to dangerous driving conditions, tree damage, and power outages.Damaging winds up to 60 mph are expected along the coast, with 25-40 mph farther inland.Storm moves into California By the weekend, the system will move south into California, taking the heavy rain to places like San Francisco and Sacramento. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Marcos family is dealing with an unbearable loss. The Houghton family was involved in a horrific crash that killed their 13-year-old son, Bryce, Saturday night on the 405 in Orange County. The family of five was headed to San Luis Obispo to visit relatives, according to Michael Houghton. Their 17-year-old daughter was driving, when their van began to slow down. Michael says it seemed like it was running out of gas. It stopped in the HOV lane. Michael, his wife, and three kids decided to stay in the van buckled up and call for help. While they waited for 911 and a tow truck, CHP says a pickup truck slammed into the van. Another vehicle hit the pickup truck after the initial crash. The CHP arrested the driver of the pickup truck on suspicion of DUI. Officers said the driver of the pickup had major injuries. Four people in the third vehicle received minor injuries. Michael described his youngest son as a jovial person who loved to make people smile. “Short in stature but big in personality,” Michael said. “One of the things he loved the most was to make people happy.” The Houghton’s other two children, 15-year-old Mason, and 17-year-old Carissa, received minor injuries, though Mason will be on crutches, according to his dad. Michael’s wife, Gael, needed surgery. Michael received injuries to the back of his head, and injuries to his eye that had previously undergone a procedure. The family was very involved with Anthem Church in Vista, as well as Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside. The Houghtons had organized an event for the homeless on the Saturday before the crash.
