(AP) — Mexican health authorities acknowledge the country’s true death toll from the coronavirus pandemic is far higher than previously thought, saying there were 193,170 “excess” deaths in the year up to Sept. 26.Of those, 139,153 are now judged to be attributable to COVID-19. Mexico’s official, test-confirmed death toll is only about 89,000, but officials previously acknowledged many people didn’t get tested or their tests were mishandled.Authorities had previously presented an estimated death toll of 103,882, after taking into account mishandled tests. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Marcos family is dealing with an unbearable loss. The Houghton family was involved in a horrific crash that killed their 13-year-old son, Bryce, Saturday night on the 405 in Orange County. The family of five was headed to San Luis Obispo to visit relatives, according to Michael Houghton. Their 17-year-old daughter was driving, when their van began to slow down. Michael says it seemed like it was running out of gas. It stopped in the HOV lane. Michael, his wife, and three kids decided to stay in the van buckled up and call for help. While they waited for 911 and a tow truck, CHP says a pickup truck slammed into the van. Another vehicle hit the pickup truck after the initial crash. The CHP arrested the driver of the pickup truck on suspicion of DUI. Officers said the driver of the pickup had major injuries. Four people in the third vehicle received minor injuries. Michael described his youngest son as a jovial person who loved to make people smile. “Short in stature but big in personality,” Michael said. “One of the things he loved the most was to make people happy.” The Houghton’s other two children, 15-year-old Mason, and 17-year-old Carissa, received minor injuries, though Mason will be on crutches, according to his dad. Michael’s wife, Gael, needed surgery. Michael received injuries to the back of his head, and injuries to his eye that had previously undergone a procedure. The family was very involved with Anthem Church in Vista, as well as Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside. The Houghtons had organized an event for the homeless on the Saturday before the crash. SAN MARCOS, Calif (KGTV) - A North County military veteran and Cal State San Marcos student is spearheading an effort to expand a veterans remembrance wall in San Marcos. The wall stands at Helen Bougher Memorial Park, and it was funded and put up by a veterans group in 2009, but spots filled-up close after about two years. The open spaces left on the wall now are reserved for POWs and those KIA or MIA. "Unfortunately, I was the one that had to tell all the veterans and their families that there was no room left on the wall, which was unacceptable," said Heidi Rassat, a co-founder for the remembrance wall. Jason Beyer said he believes he was the last to purchase a tile before requests were capped. Now, the ex-Marine is on a mission to add more spaces to the wall. "I think about my co-workers who have passed away, and doing this project keeps their memory alive for me," Beyer said, adding veterans should have the opportunity to be remembered. "They should have this space for their loved ones to remember them, to remember their service, remember their sacrifice," he said. Beyer started a group called the San Marcos Veterans Memorial Initiative. Beyer is also a student at CSU San Marcos, and he has gotten art students involved in designing a way to free up or add spaces to the existing wall. They hope to give design concepts to the city and hopefully begin fundraising next year.
