SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Extreme wind and heat is causing a school district along the San Diego coast to close early Friday. The Coronado Unified School District announced Thursday that the district will be on a minimum day Friday as heat reaches into the 90s. A minimum day means that all schools will begin at their regular times, but end the day at 12:30 p.m. Friday will mark the second day the district will let out early as heat scorches the region. We are aware fireworks are a time-tradition, however due to concerns of severe dry weather, we have been advised against them,” the district said in a tweet. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the first time since his arrest, the La Jolla restaurant owner charged with rape is speaking publicly. Daniel Dorado is testifying in his defense.Eight women have come forward saying Dorado drugged and sexually assaulted them over the course of a decade. The owner of the Voce del Mar restaurant in Birdrock faces 35 felony charges for allegedly raping women after drugging their drinks. "She was interested in being alone with me," said Dorado. "She initiated the physical contact."Prosecutors say in at least two of the cases, a sexual relationship occurred after the women got visibly sick and threw up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hate crimes throughout San Diego County and across the state are rising at an alarming rate, according to new reports.Hate crimes between 2015 and 2017 rose 27 percent in San Diego County alone, a new report published in Law Enforcement Quarterly states.Statewide, hate crimes rose 44 percent between 2014 and 2017.A report from California’s Attorney General shows that San Diego County saw 95 hate crime incidents in 2017. That compared with 84 hate crimes countywide in 2016 and 72 in 2015.According to documents, anti-Semitic hate crime rose nearly 27 percent from 2016 to 2017 statewide. Hate crimes involving racial bias increased 16 percent within the same amount of time.The statistics come amid recent tragedies around the country, including a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday that left 11 people dead. RELATED: Sign outside UCSD Jewish student center defacedThe rise in hate crimes also coincide with recent events in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Details are beginning to emerge about the woman who was shot and killed inside a Church’s Chicken in the South Bay Wednesday night. Maribel Merino-Iba?ez, 28, was killed while working her shift at the Otay Mesa West restaurant. “I believe in God and I believe that one day justice will come his way and that won’t bring my daughter back, but I know that there will be justice for her,” said Emma Karla Merino, the victim’s mother. "I just want justice, because nobody can bring my sister back. Her body is gone, but she is here in my heart and she’s never going away,” said Gabriela Merino, the victim’s sister. Someone who knew Merino-Iba?ez told 10News she had worked at the Church’s Chicken for nine years and was a shift manager. A vigil is set to take place at the restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. Another victim was identified as Mario Rojas. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition. According to police, the suspect is a man in his 30s who got into an argument with employees after trying to use counterfeit money.
