SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There's a sign inside Hillcrest's Industrial Grind Coffee that reads, "our first, funky little coffee shop opened in 2011 - not too far from where you're standing right now."It's a place that shaped barista Jennifer Bizjak."It's where I learned everything I know about coffee," she said.That original location is a third of a mile away, near the northwest corner of Park Boulevard and University Avenue. It's now shuttered, and untouched. It's part of a complex that includes small homes and mom-and-pop businesses - one owner said she's preparing to leave after 17 years.Real Estate investment group Diversyfund bought the complex in June for .65 million. It plans to replace it with an 80,000 square foot mixed-use building that includes 58 units, including 6 affordable apartments.Shayan Rajabi, an investment analyst for the group, said the new complex is designed with sensitivity to the neighborhood. He said it would bring more housing to a region with a sever under-supply, plus affordable units. He added the building would feature a coffee shop, or microbrew, that would complement the community."I think the scale of our building is comfortable as it adds density without overloading the area. It’s the kind of scale that they do in German cities, which are known to have very people-oriented building codes," he said. That development would be near the northwest corner of Park and University, where a recent city request is now leading to concerns of future overdevelopment.In February, a city planner asked the Uptown Community Planning Group to support rezoning a little more than an acre at the northwest corner of Park and University to allow more intense development than what is in the recently approved community plan.Board member Mat Wahlstrom said the planner gave very few specifics.  "He simply said that a stakeholder, which, I would assume is the property owner, approached us to see about having this done," Wahlstrom said.Rayabi said the Diversyfund project fits within current zoning and that the group did not ask or need a re-zone for the project.Peggy Shapiro, who owns the strip mall that's actually on the corner - which includes the Medical Center Pharmacy - also said she has no redevelopment plans. She added she was unaware of the proposed rezone.On Thursday, City spokesman Arian Collins said REAL Development submitted a rezone application for the properties at 3906 and 3922 Park Boulevard, to accommodate a 58-unit mixed use complex with affordable housing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center) has decided it will no longer allow armed, uniformed officers at its facilities and events. “Last year, The Center heard from over 140 Black community members at our Town Hall for the Black LGBTQ Community. Many spoke of the pain and hurt that is caused when one does not feel welcome in our LGBTQ community, including at The Center.Overwhelmingly, we heard that the lack of policy restricting the presence of armed, uniformed law enforcement officers is a barrier to the Black LGBTQ community feeling welcomed at The Center,” said CEO Cara Dessert in a letter posted to The Center’s website. I think we’ve come a long way, but we’re not where we need to be,” said community activist Charles Brown.“I’m black, and I’m gay. So am I a target? I think I am. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Association of Governments will debate Wednesday the best way to get people to the airport. Four possible plans involving public transportation are involved. One would create a central terminal on Navy property near Old Town and tunnel under the airport with a people mover. Two other proposals would involve a terminal, but use an elevated people mover. The fourth option would extend the trolley, adding tracks along Harbor Drive. Dorene Robertson said the predictability of public transportation would be a benefit. “I know the shuttle's not going to get in a car accident, I know I'm going to get here when I plan to get here, I'm not going to get stuck on the freeway and not get here. So it takes away the uncertainty of getting to the airport on time,” said Robertson. Alex Santos, who typically relies on Uber to reach the airport, says he would only use public transportation if it was direct. “If it was dropping me off in front of my house or a townhome I live in, or a block away, that'd be perfect.” The SANDAG plans would cost anywhere from .8 billion to .7 billion dollars. They would serve as many as 44,000 people per day by 2050 and decrease traffic on Harbor Drive as much as 35 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The suspect accused of supplying the fentanyl that led to the deadly overdose of a 25-year-old admitted to supplying the drug in court Tuesday. Uriah Odish admitted to selling more than 500 grams of what he knew to be fentanyl between 2017 and the day of the deadly overdose of Tiffany Hansen in 2018. “Every time we have an overdose death, we are going to come looking for the dealer,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “We are using every available criminal and civil tool to combat this deadly epidemic and stop these tragic losses.”“We work every day to save lives and we grieve when we lose a precious soul to drugs,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Karen Flowers. “We will continue to pursue anyone who deals death. Is that you? If so, we are coming and your time will soon be spent behind bars. We are relentless.”The U.S. Attorney’s Office told 10News in a news release it’s working closely with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration to investigate fatal overdose cases. 1094
